The Isle of Man - Two ports and a Calf

This second video in the Isle of Man series features Port Erin, Port St. Mary and the Calf of Man. All are located in the South of the island, an area that reminds many visitors of Cornwall with its winding lanes, dry shone walls, wide beaches and narrow coves but with 18th century crofters’ villages and four-horned sheep it us defiantly Manx.

Both towns are served by the Isle of Man Stean Railway that runs from the capital, Dougles, as well as two active Lifeboats.
Port Erin, still designated a village, is larger than Castletown, the ancient capital of the island. Unlike many much larger English towns, this ‘village’ not only has a busy shopping centre, but an active branch of the Isle of Man Bank.
Port St Mary is the home of the Isle of Man Yacht Club with both an inner and outer harbour. Family holidaymakers can joy both rock pools as well as a large sandy beach.
Both harbours offer boat trips around the Calf of Man to see the birdlife and the colony of seals.
More active tourists will enjoy the coastal paths that lead past the Chasms to the Calf of Man.
The Sound Café overlooking the Calf offers both food, dronk and information. The Manx Heritage Trust which oversees the Calf offers overnight stays on the island.

Scotland's Islands

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2018 | We'll begin on the tranquil Isle of Iona, where Christianity first reached the shores of Scotland. Then we'll visit another of the Inner Hebrides, road-tripping across the Isle of Skye, where we'll explore Iron Age forts, peat fields, a venerable distillery, thatched crofter huts, and the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula. Finally, we'll sail to Orkney — more Nordic than Celtic — with its stony remnants of a thriving Iron Age civilization and evocative reminders of the 20th-century wartime harbor at Scapa Flow. Silver Cloud (Silversea) at Port St. Mary, Isle of Man 30 May 2022 4K

On a cloudy morning at the end of May I was up and out early tracking Silverseas Silver Cloud as it headed to and arrived to anchor off Port St Mary. The last time I filmed her was her arrival at Douglas harbour in June 2019 when she sported a different livery on her hull.

Watch her arrival and as the Zodiac Ribs are deployed to ferry passengers to their various shore excursions.

There will be another video very soon featuring Silver Cloud when she called at the Calf of Man a few days later (on her way to Port St Mary again)

Thanks for watching. Many more ship videos to come from different locations (including mainland UK and France) and of course more Isle of Man content.

You Tube tells me that of the many views of my videos in the last 28 days 89% of viewers were not subscribed... Please do like and subscribe if you haven't already it really helps and enjoy the videos.

Thank You!

Isle of Man - Port Erin - Douglas by steam train. Passing through some beautiful countryside

Port Erin (Manx: Purt Çhiarn, meaning lord's port) is a seaside village in the south-west of the Isle of Man, in the historic parish of Rushen. It was previously a seaside resort before the decline of the tourist trade. Administratively it is designated as a village district, with its own board of commissioners. The district covers around 1 square mile, and is adjacent to: Port St Mary to the south-east; the main part of Arbory and Rushen parish district to the north and east; the sea to the west; and an exclave of Arbory and Rushen parish district (including the village of Cregneash) to the south. Following recent residential expansion, the settlement is now contiguous with that of Port St Mary, and on 18 July 2018 Tynwald authorised a public enquiry into the proposed expansion of the district boundary to include some of this expansion.[3]

The village was twinned with Latour-de-France.

Isle of Man - stunning Castle Rushen (Cashtal Rosien) in Castletown, Isle of Man. Let's travel to the Isle of Man and let's visit Castle Rushen (Manx: Cashtal Rosien) which is a medieval castle located in the Isle of Man's historic capital, Castletown, in the south of the island. Castle Rushen (Cashtal Rosien) towers over the Market Square to the south-east and the harbour to the north-east. Castle Rushen (Cashtal Rosien) is amongst the best examples of medieval castles on the British Isles, and is still in use as a court house, museum and educational centre.
Castletown (Manx: Balley Chashtal) is a town in the Isle of Man, geographically within the historical parish of Malew but administered separately. Lying at the south of the island, it was the Manx capital until 1869. The centre of town is dominated by Castle Rushen, a well-preserved medieval castle, originally built for a Viking king.
