Exploring Port Clinton, Ohio
Port Clinton, situated at the confluence of the Portage River and Lake Erie, serves as the city and county seat of Ottawa County, in the state of Ohio. As of the 2024, the population is 6,029 residents. Positioned approximately 34 miles southeast of Toledo, Port Clinton is the central hub of the Port Clinton micropolitan area.
The city earned the moniker Walleye Capital of the World thanks to the abundant fishing grounds for this species located off the shores of Lake Erie's Western Basin. This designation is celebrated annually with the Walleye Drop event on New Year's Eve in downtown Port Clinton.
Established in 1828, the town derived its name from DeWitt Clinton, the governor of New York, renowned for his pivotal role in the creation of the Erie Canal. This canal, connecting the Midwest through the Great Lakes to the markets of the Hudson River and New York, had a profound impact on the town's development.
Throughout the 19th century, Port Clinton experienced modest population growth, tallying 16 hundred inhabitants in 1880 and over 2 thousand by 1890. By 1886, the town boasted three newspaper offices, four churches, and a singular bank. A variety of manufacturing enterprises, the most prominent being Couche and Company, a sawmill employing ten workers. The majority of businesses in Port Clinton catered to the needs of farmers in the surrounding countryside.

Stop by Port Clinton, Ohio (a small coastal town along Lake Erie) and see the Port Clinton lighthouse. Drive 23 minutes to Fremont, Ohio where President Rutherford Hayes' Spiegel Grove is located. Visit the Rutherford Hayes Presidential Library, and learn about the 19th President of the United States. Also, see the collection of President Hayes' son - Presidential Medallion and Handwritten letters of the 44 individuals who assumed the Presidency.
Drive 1 hour and 25 minutes from Fremont to Cleveland Metropolis. Stop by President James Garfield Memorial, and pay respect to the 20th President of the United States. Visit the Cleveland Cathedral in Downtown Cleveland. See the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and take a photo with the giant Long Live Rock sign. Walk north to the Voinovich Bicentennial Park. Here, relax and take in the view of Downtown Cleveland to the south, and Lake Erie to the North. Restaurants are all located around this park. Walk to the Free Stamp Sculpture and take a wacky photo with it.
Drive an hour and 19 minutes to the city of Youngstown (the old center of the steel industry until its decline in the 70s). This city is situated almost hallway between Cleveland and Pittsburg.
Drive an hour and 9 minutes to the city of Canton, and visit the final resting place of President William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, at the McKinley Memorial. Next to it is the McKinley Presidential library, visit the Museum to get to know President McKinley. This Presidential library is different from other libraries of its kind since it houses a Science museum and planetarium. This is to honor the President's love and passion for Science.
