Route 66 TOP 10 Spots - Sights On The Iconic Road Trip From Chicago To LA
The iconic Route 66 from Chicago to LA, these are our Top Ten Spots on Route 66. There are so many interesting places to stop and explore on this drive it was hard to pick 10.
Some are small roadside attractions, some are national parks and some are towns but for various reasons, they all struck a chord with us. This was our first trip along Route 66, through 8 states but it definitely won’t be our last. Next time we intend to drive it from LA back to Chicago.
We spent 3 weeks exploring the Mother Road and still only scratched the surface of all the attractions, trading posts, museums and towns along the 2448 miles.
One of the best things along the road were the people we meant from the fellow Route 66 travellers to the people and business owners.

Detroit Deep Dish.
Distinctive from its Chicago counterpart in several ways, Detroit-style deep-dish pizza is among the city’s most iconic dishes. Since the 1940s, a number of famous pizzerias and chains, from Buddy’s and Loui’s to Cloverleaf and Niki’s, have been serving up these square delights to hungry locals and visitors. Famous for their buttery and crisp crust, subtly spiced tomato and mounds of mozzarella, what’s not to love.
Coney Island Hot Dogs.
Of all the cities that have their own spin on the Coney Island hot dog, Detroit’s may just be the most iconic. Made from a natural skin casing hot dog, chili, mustard, and sweet chopped onions, it’s a relatively straightforward proposition, but a satisfying one nonetheless. Its fame has certainly been helped by the healthy rivalry between the city’s two most famous Coney Island restaurants, which just happen to be next door to each other.
Asian Corned Beef.
As a true example of “fusion” food, before that was even a thing, the Asian Corned Beef chain was started in 1978 and now has six locations across the city. Most famous for its range of Egg Rolls featuring corned beef, cheese, cabbage, and other fillings all wrapped up in a crispy fried roll, it’s a cheap and typically Detroit snack for many residents.
Telway Hamburgers.
Speaking of cheap, ideally late-night eats, this long-standing fast food institution churns out burgers, sliders, hot dogs, and coffee 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With two locations, one in Southwest Detroit and one in Madison Heights, many a night out in Detroit ends with a bag full of greasy Telway sliders and barely a dent in your wallet. Cash only.
Scotty Simpson’s Fish & Chips.
Another timeless Detroit restaurant and dish, Scotty Simpson’s Fish & Chips opened in 1950 and proudly has had only three owners since. Their iconic fish comes in a golden, secret recipe batter, served with hand-cut chips, unique coleslaw, tangy tartar sauce, and a roll. It’s a combination that hasn’t changed in over 60 years, much like the décor.
Slows Bar BQ.
Slows has taken Detroit barbecue by storm since opening in 2005, receiving much national and regional media coverage. It was featured on Man vs. Food in 2009, during which Adam Richman sampled the Triple Threat Pork and the Yardbird sandwiches, the latter of which went on to finish in the top three on his subsequent show, Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America. Slows now has four locations for you to sample that famous Yardbird, which has pulled chicken in honey mustard sauce, mushrooms, cheese, and bacon.
Dutch Girl Donuts.
Dutch Girl Donuts has been a constant in Detroit since 1948. Their delicious and time-honored donuts are excellent value and have remained remarkably unchanged over the years. Still, in the same family that founded it and relatively small operation, quality has never been jeopardized. It’s also open 24 hours a day for those late-night cravings.
Boston Cooler.
Not a dish but certainly a Detroit icon, the Boston Cooler is a pretty simple, two-ingredient drink. Also known as a Vernors float, it is made with Vernors, a ginger ale from Detroit, and vanilla ice cream. Some say the ice cream also has to be from Detroit, Stroh’s in particular. The only question, then, is whether to simply float or to blend. Find them on menus around the city.
Mike’s Famous Ham Place.
The ham sandwich may be a simple dish, but when done right, it can certainly be iconic. Located on Michigan Avenue, Mike’s Famous Ham Place has been perfecting its ham since 1974. The ham sandwich has an impressive ham-to-bread ratio, with the ham being cut into thick chunks right off the bone. If Mike says it’s famous, who are we to argue?
Big Boy.
A Big Boy is not exactly an iconic Detroit dish, but the chain remains a Michigan staple. The company has its headquarters in Metro Detroit as well as having 70 of its 78 locations in Michigan. The signature Big Boy was the original double-deck hamburger, predating the Big Mac and Big King, making it pretty iconic.

EXPLORING THE AMAZING TAP & CORK ROUTE IN PONTIAC (QUEBEC) // Things to do near Ottawa & Gatineau
The MRC Pontiac of the Outaouais is full of little gems and a booming agritourism sector. This week, in all new travel episode, we explore the amazing Tap & Cork Route which is a touristic route that allows visitors and locals to discover over 15 wineries, microbreweries, cider houses, and spirit houses in the Ottawa River Valley. More specifically, we visit 3 awesome locations in the Pontiac County that are situated less than an hour's drive from Gatineau which allows you to disconnect from the city and appreciate amazing local products.
Our first stop on this journey is the Domaine de Pontiac Village which is not only a really quaint little winery and vintage car museum situated in the small town of Quoyn. There, we meet Maude the co-owner and taste some delicious wine and check out their cool car collection. At only a 40-minute drive from Gatineau, this is a great weekend getaway with things to do for the entire family.
After that, we head up the highway 148 to the town of Bristol (Quebec) to visit the famous Cidrerie Coronation Hall Cider Mills where we get to taste some amazing cider as well as some bake goods that will make you want to never leave.
Finally, we end our adventure by visiting the Little Red Wagon Winery Winery in Shawville (Quebec). This is not only a great winery, but also a bistro, an art gallery, and a place to enjoy some music on the weekend. With fantastic customer service, local products, and a tranquil location, you are sure to leave with a smile on your face.
The Tap & Cork is just one of many amazing things to do in the Pontiac region of the Outaouais. From adrenaline packed activities, to more relaxing agritourism, you are sure to find something for the entire family. Hope you enjoy this week's episode as much I did producing it. Route 66 in Pontiac, Illinois
I'm in one of the cities in Illinois that pays tribute to the Mother Road to the fullest! Pontiac, Illinois is home to the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame Museum, in which I visit. Plus there are four other notable areas in Pontiac that highlight the history of Route 66, including the decommissioned Illinois State Police headquarters (south of the city) and the Division Street Bridge.
This one is lengthy (at 18 1/2 minutes; didn't want to do a Part 1 & 2), but for any history and Route 66 fan, it will be worth every minute!
