Places to see in ( Bathgate - UK )

Places to see in ( Bathgate - UK )

Bathgate is a town in West Lothian, Scotland, on the M8 motorway 5 miles west of Livingston. Nearby towns are Armadale, Blackburn, Linlithgow, Livingston, West Calder and Whitburn. Situated 2 miles (3 km) south of the ancient Neolithic burial site at Cairnpapple Hill, Bathgate and the surrounding area show signs of habitation since about 3500 BC.

Bathgate was an industrial town in its time. It played host to the Menzies' Foundry (demolished due to the railway link construction) and British Leyland was sited in Bathgate. It had two train stations, Bathgate North and South. There was a link that ran from the site of the current station, along Menzies Road, at the rear of one side of Mill Road all the way to Easton Road where the station was. This was used for the coal-mining industries and the foundries.

Bathgate has easy access to the M8 Motorway via Junctions 3A and 4, linking the town to Edinburgh, Inverclyde via Glasgow and Towns in between. The A801 links Bathgate to the M9 via Polmont. Bathgate Railway Station is operated by Scotrail and is served by eastbound services to Edinburgh Waverley and westbound services to Helensburgh Central via Glasgow, Milngavie via Glasgow, and Balloch via Glasgow.

Bathgate has a great variety of shops. In the late 19th century the co-operative halls were built and the served the community until closure in the 1980s. It provided a bakery, butchery, funeral parlour, grocery store, clothing, furniture and even a dance hall. Even after the closure the co-operative dance hall was used as the Room At The Top. It caught fire in 1997. Bathgate is also home to a popular nightclub called The Twig, located at the end of Livery Street

Notable Bathgate residents have included Debbie Geddes, Bernard Gallagher, former captain of the Ryder Cup Team, David Tennant (born in Bathgate but raised in Paisley); his father Alexander McDonald, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland; Sir James Young Simpson, the discoverer of the anaesthetic properties of chloroform; and John Newland, one of the town's major benefactors. Newland emigrated to the West Indies. There he became a rich planter, using slaves to maintain and harvest his sugar-cane crop. His benefaction allowed the establishment of Bathgate Academy, which was founded in 1833. He is remembered today by an annual pageant (known as the Procession or Newland's day), held on the first Saturday in June.

The local secondary schools are Bathgate Academy and St Kentigern's Academy. The Bathgate primary schools are Balbardie, St Mary's, Boghall, St Columba's, and Windyknowe. A new primary school, Simpson Primary, opened on the site of the British Leyland Factory in August 2007

( Bathgate - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Bathgate . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Bathgate - UK

Old Photographs Grangemouth Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Grangemouth a town in east Stirlingshire. Grangemouth's original growth as a town relied mainly on its geographical location. Originally a bustling port, trade flowed through the town with the construction of the Forth and Clyde Canal in the 18th century. Nowadays, the economy of Grangemouth is focused primarily on the large petrochemical industry of the area which includes an oil refinery, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The town is twinned with La Porte, Indiana, USA. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

The Antonine Wall, Scotland. Full tour of the Roman Wall.

You will have heard of Hadrian’s Wall, which the Romans built at the northern boundary of the Roman Empire, but you may not be aware that they built a second wall further north, the Antonine Wall, after they had invaded Scotland. It extended over 37 miles from the Clyde to the Forth. I walked the best preserved and most scenic parts of the wall between Kirkintilloch and Falkirk and visited the remaining sites by car. This film shows what remains of the wall today.

The wall was built between AD 142-3 under the orders of Emperor Antonius Pius and was occupied by the Romans for at least 20 years. It was built from turf and timber and consisted of a rampart up to 12 feet tall. An example of a reconstructed Roman turf and timber fort can be visited is at Lunt Fort, Bagington, England.

From the West coast the wall started in Old Kilpatrick but I start my tour in Glasgow where there is an outstanding collection of finds from along the wall. The places shown in the film are listed below:
0:00:41 - The Hunterian Museum, Glasgow - Largest collection of finds from the wall inc sculptures and milestones.
0:01:25 - Golden Hill Park, Duntocher – Traces of the wall’s stone base. Nothing remains of the fort, butbthe outline is marked in the grass. Small car park – Post code G81 6AR.

0:08:37 - Tollpark - A very scenic stretch of the ditch through a belt of trees.
0:08:59 - CastleCary Roman Fort - The east boundary wall and foundations of the Headquarter’s building are still visible.
0:09:30 - Seabegs Wood - A scenic and well-preserved section of the rampart, ditch and military way.

Old Photographs Of Montrose Angus Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Montrose, Scottish Gaelic: Monadh Rois, a coastal resort town and former royal burgh in Angus. It is situated 38 miles North of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. It is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times. It is known that golf has been played on the links of Montrose for more than four hundred and fifty years making it one of the very earliest and important venues in the history of the Royal and Ancient game. It was not until 1810, however, that the golfers of Montrose formed themselves into a club. Panmure Barracks was built in Montrose in 1779 and was originally an asylum. It became a Barracks for the Angus and Mearns Militia in the midle of the 19th century. It was demolished between the World War I and World War 2. and the area has subsequently been built over. A cannon was found on the site in 1992, built into a World War I gun emplacement. Montrose New Bridge was completed to the design of Sir E wen Williams in 1930, replacing an earlier suspension bridge. Sir Evan Owen Williams, born 20 March 1890, died 23 May 1969, was a British engineer and architect. Williams born at 16 Caroline Terrace in Tottenham, London, England, on 20 March 1890. He was the son of Evan Owen Williams, a Welsh-born grocer and Mary Roberts. Originally both farmers, they both moved to London some years before Owen was born. Williams had two sisters and two brothers. Mary Kate, died young, but the second born, Elizabeth Maud, became an author. Owen had an older brother, Robert Osian, who was a successful banker and came out of retirement to manage the finances of his brother's engineering practice which was launched in 1940. The final chapter of the ill fated 1715 Jacobite rebellion was played out in Montrose. Towards the end of the uprising, which had lasted nearly six months, from September 1715 to February 1716, James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender; formerly James, Prince of Wales, arrived in Montrose, where he spent his last night in Scotland, on 4 February 1716. He sailed from Montrose to exile in France. The town was held for his son, Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie; the Young Pretender, 30 years later and in February 1746 the largest naval battle of the war was fought in Montrose Harbour. Before World War I the Royal Flying Corps established a base at Montrose, later RAF Montrose,. On 26 February 1913, it became the first operational military aerodrome to be established in the United Kingdom. During World War II Montrose became a hub for a constant stream of international pilots from all over the Commonwealth, Poland, Czechoslovakia, America, Russia, France and other allied nations. As well as a training base Montrose was also an operational airfield for Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire squadrons, which flew sorties over Norway and were a part of the air defences for Edinburgh. Scurdie Ness Lighthouse is located on the headland and has also been referred to as Montroseness Lighthouse.

To whom it may concern: We do not break an entry. Should we be unable to gain access through means of getting through an open space, we walk away. We take nothing but footage and leave nothing but footprints. We are storytellers, some locations depicting a sad one which may leave some views passionate or disgruntled. We mean no disrespect to the locations we visit or the people once connected to them.
We enter derelict structures at our own risk. Civil trespass, also known as simple trespass, is not a criminal offence in Scotland. Police get involved if there's a possibility that an offence has been committed such as refusal to leave (breach of the peace), fire, physical damage or theft etc all of which we avoid as that isn't our intention. Speaking of which, we are of course not responsible for those who get into bother by visiting any of the places we've been to.
In the event that anyone posts negative, close-minded or ridiculous comments, they wont be approved and you will be blocked from future commenting, so don't be a dick and waste your time.
