Split is located in western Croatia along the Dalmatian coast. As Croatia’s second largest city, it’s always buzzing with life and has been for thousands of years. Split was put on the map by the emperor Diocletian, who had his palace built here between 295 and 305. After his death, the palace was continuously used throughout history by different civilizations, like the Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians. Today, life continues between the old city walls and it’s one of the reasons why travelers visit. But Split’s unique setting between the dramatic coastal mountains and the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea also make it an ideal vacation hub.

Podstrana is a small town near Split, and a perfect haven to escape the crowds of the largest city in Dalmatia. Situated at the foot of Perun, the slope of mountain Mosor, Podstrana consists of five villages; the oldest one Gornja Podstrana is situated at an altitude of 290 meters, on the slopes of Perun. Other villages, Grljanac, Strozanac, Saint Martin and Mutogras are coastal villages.
During recent years Podstrana has really capitalized on its top location on the Adriatic Sea. Podstrana is developing at an increasing rate as an elite, Split suburb. People of Podstrana really have everything going for them; beautiful beaches, hiking, and cycling trails and many other hidden gems make Podstrana top tourist destination for all traveling to Croatia. Podstrana has a population of 12,000 inhabitants.

Here you will enjoy the crystal clear water and blue Adriatic sea. There are a number of activities you can do here, from canoeing to rock climbing. The beaches themselves are gravel with good sea access. The most beautiful beach in Podstrana is in the Hotel Le Meridien Lav, which was completely renovated and improved with a number of amenities. Near this beach, you can find an open outdoor pool, children's playground, garage parking, deck chairs, parasols, cafe, and a restaurant. All in all, everything your heart can desire.

Okay, not exactly, but Lucius Artorius Castus did and he is considered to be a potential historical basis for King Arthur by many renowned historians, including the British! Lucius Artorius Castus' sarcophagus was found in Podstrana in the church of Saint Martin. Lucius Castus was a soldier, centurion, dux legion, and finally a prefect of the Roman navy. After the end of his military career, he was named Procurator of Liburnia, which is the governor of today's Dalmatia.
He truly saw the most of the old world, from Judea, Parthia, Budapest, Italy, and finally Britain, where his victories won him the status of a legend. His final resting place is here, in Podstrana.

Split is Croatia’s second largest city. Founded as a Greek Colony way back in the 3rd century, and later the home of Roman emperor Diocletian. From there, waves of foreign control shifted throughout history as the Byzantine, Venitian, Austria-Hungary, French, German, Dothraki, and most recently, Yugoslavia, have all had their moment in time here.
Empires, Republics, and Kingdoms have all come and gone, but the walls of Diocletian's Palace have remained.
Here is my top 10 list of the best things to do in Split, Croatia in just one day!
1. Get Up Early
One of the absolute best things to do in Split, Croatia is to wake up early and go walk around the old town of Diocletian's Palace. Split gets very crowded with boat tours and tourists after about 8am, so if you want to enjoy Split and all of her beauty, I highly recommend an early start!
2. Bakery Breakfast
One of the most popular things to do in Split is to walk down along the Riva Promenade and this is where you can find a number of bakeries for breakfast.
3. Walk the Riva Promenade
The Riva promenade is where everyone comes and goes on their Croatia boat charters and there’s a ton of little stalls setup with local crafts and Croatian food.
4. Shop the Ribarnica (Fish Market) in Split
If you are up early enough you can visit the city’s fish market right in the heart of old town, where you can pick up a fresh catch straight from the Adriatic at a good price - perfect if you’re on a budget and want to cook Croatian food at home.
5. Explore the Green Market of Split
For fruits and veggies, the farmer’s market just outside the ancient palace walls is another great place to get a taste of something local. The Green Market is open every day.
6. Enjoy Bačvice Beach in downtown Split, Croatia
Now, most of you who come to visit Split will likely head out on a boat or yacht for more beautiful beaches and water, but if you have an extra day in the city like we do before we ship off to Hvar, this is a very convenient spot to cool off.
7. Play Picigin on Bačvice Beach
The must-play Croatian water game is called Picigin, and is said to have originated right here. Traditionally played with the interior of a tennis ball Picigin is a mix of volleyball and handball. There’s no formal rules, point or winners, but the goal is to pass around the ball with the most creative and spectacular rallies possible.
Honestly, this was probably my favorite thing to do in Split!
8. Hike Up Marjan
For a great view over Split, hike up Marjan to the viewpoint over the city.
9. Eat at Pizzeria Galija
Croatia has incredible Italian Food, and this is one of the best pizzas I've had! For more traditional Croatian food, Fife Restaurant in downtown Split is also very good!
10. Finish with Gelateria Emiliana
Every day of our Croatia Road Trip was pretty much capped off with gelato. It's one of the best things to do in Split, Croatia for sure!

Podstrana is a small tourist resort located on the picturesque south-eastern part of Split-Dalmatia County, 8 km from Split. The coastal part of Podstrana stretches 6 km along the 533 m high hill Perun following the 6-km long indented coastline with a number of beautiful gravel bays and beaches.
The tourist offer consists of more than 2,500 beds, most of which are apartments in private accommodation. If Podstrana is your choice for holidays and vacations, in addition to its natural beauty and friendly hosts, it offers active recreation such as hiking and biking. In a week's time, we have booked a lovely beachfront Airbnb in Podstrana so we decided why not go and check it out! And Oh.My. It is beautiful, the sunset won us over! We cannot wait to stay there :)
