Places to see in ( Pocklington - UK )

Pocklington is a small market town and civil parish situated at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is located 13 miles (21 km) east of York and 26 miles (42 km) north-west of Hull. The town's skyline is dominated by the 15th century tower of All Saints' Church. Pocklington lies at the centre of the ecclesiastical Parish of Pocklington, which also encompasses the small hamlet of Kilnwick Percy as well as a scattering of outlying farms and houses.

Pocklington gets its name via the Old English Poclintun from the Anglian settlement of Pocel's (or Pocela's) people and the Old English word tun meaning farm or settlement, but though the town's name can only be traced back to around 650 AD, the inhabitation of Pocklington as a site is thought to extend back a further 1,000 years or more to the Bronze Age. Pocklington appears on the 14th century Gough Map, the oldest route map in Great Britain. In the Iron Age Pocklington was a major town of the Parisi tribe and by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it was the second largest settlement in Yorkshire after York itself.

Pocklington developed through the Middle Ages while many similar places fell into dramatic decline. Pocklington owed much of its prosperity in the Middle Ages to the fact that it was a local centre for the trading of wool and lay on the main road to York, an important national centre for the export of wool to the continent. Wool was England’s principal export in the earlier Middle Ages. The town's coat of arms shield is based on that of the Dolman family, founders of Pocklington School. The arms were granted to the town council in 1980. The crown at the base of the shield is the emblem of the saints, along with the gold cross, symbolises the town's historic connection with Paulinus of York and the Archbishop of York.

Pocklington is a spring line settlement, located at the base of the Yorkshire Wolds. Geologically speaking, the rocks underlying this area were lain down under tropical oceans, and, when the land rose, the chalk wolds were formed from the skeletons and shells covering the sea floor. The landscape around Pocklington therefore varies from flat arable land primarily devoted to agriculture to the south and west, and grassy, chalk hills and dry valleys to the north and east. A lot of the more level farming country was, from the Middle Ages onwards, reclaimed from marshland.

Near the centre of Pocklington is Burnby Hall Gardens. These gardens are home to the National Collection of Hardy Water Lilies - the biggest such collection to be found in a natural setting in Europe. The Burnby Hall Gardens collection of water lilies has been designated as a National Collection by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.

Day trippers also visit Millington Wood (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Pocklington Canal Head, with footpaths along the canal. The canal has been named one of the top ten places to see aquatic wildlife in Britain. Nearby Allerthorpe Lakeland Park has parkland for walking, a lake with watersports facilities, a separate lake for fly fishing, and a BMX trail. There is also a large caravan park for visitors.

Pocklington lies on the A1079 road, the main arterial route between the cities of York and Hull. Pocklington is served by a number of bus routes provided by East Yorkshire Motor Services.
Pocklington Airfield has three concrete and tarmac runways of 1,600 yards (1,500 m), sufficient in length to take RAF bombers during the Second World War, but in September 1946 the airfield was closed. Pocklington was once part of the rail network, with a railway station dating back to 1847. This was closed as a result of the Beeching Report in November 1965.

Walking through WORST RATED Seaside Town - Bridlington, Yorkshire!

I visit Bridlington, the 9th worst rated seaside town in the UK to see what gives this place such a bad rating. I recently visited Skegness the number 1 worst rated seaside town in the UK and didn't think it was that bad. So will Bridlington fair any better?

I walk along Bridlington South Beach and North Beach, see what the sand and sea is like, look at the cool beach huts. Go for fish and chips at Pier 6 Broadwalk Cafe for some award winning fish and chips. Check out Bridlington Spa RNLI Lifeboat Station and East Riding Leisure Bridlington which are all pretty impressive buildings. Walk along a few of the piers that Bridlington have including North Pier. I also take a walk along the main promenade to look at the amusements, games and activities.

Lake District, 10 Lakes Tour, England

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
England's Lake District is one of the prettiest parts of the United Kingdom as we'll show you in our driving tour that's going to be visiting most of the lakes of this wonderful area in the northwest of Great Britain, sharing with you some astonishingly pretty views.
We'll also visit some of the small towns that dot this landscape and we will take you on a boat ride from one end of Ullswater to the other, it's the second largest Lake in the Lake District, although it's only 9 miles long, so you'll find that the Lake District is relatively compact in size.
It's about 30 miles wide and about 40 miles from north to south, all included in the National Park that was created in 1951.
Windermere 2:53 Ambleside 4:00 Rydalwater 5:14 Grasmere 5:51 Thirlmere 9:51 Derwentwater 10:50 Buttermere 13:44 Crummockwater 14:17 Keswick 15:06 Castlerrig Stone Circle 15:33 Ullswater 17:36 Brotherswater 20:11 Troutbeck 21:08 Peter Rabbit 21:56
Especially when guided by a tour company like Mountain Goat with our excellent driver, Kevin, in their minibus that will take us to all of the main sights without any effort on your part. We’re going to show you a one-day trip summarized in this movie in which we see the major lakes.
While it's called the Lake District for a good reason – that's the main attraction – there are many other sites to see, like the old stone bridge, the beautiful countryside we’re driving past, the mountain streams and lakes of course.

hello there I’m trying to reach the pocklington canal

From Goole to Barmby Barrage and on to East Cottingwith in East Yorkshire. Huge thanks to Pocklington canal amenity society member John Lewis, as I needed a second crew member for the trip simply to gain passage through Goole docks, and he graciously stepped up. We cranked it along a very windy tidal river Ouse, going the wrong side of an island, stopping off at a campsite pub and then I was left to journey solo along the wild and winding river Derwent, before meeting another PCAS member Malcolm who was ready with his camera to take snaps!!

MELBOURNE: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #36 of 172

Sharing its name with the most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, this is situated approximately 8 miles West of the market town of Market Weighton and 4.5 miles Southwest of the market town of Pocklington. It’s inextricably linked together with its neighbour Thornton, and the two share a church (which is located in Thornton).

Farming is a main economic driver in the area, with an agricultural machinery business – Sumo UK - employing about 40 people. The village is just to the South of the Pocklington Canal and has an easily recognisable spire on the top of the former St Monica’s church, clearly visible from all around.

The village has a local shop and it’s not a chain store. Rather it is an independent village store and I can personally recommend the handmade sandwiches on offer! The village has access to a mobile library which visits the village every so often, and when it does it can be found opposite the shop.

The Pocklngton Canal Amenity Society runs boat trips in the summer months on a vessel called New Horizons. Most of the canal lies within a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Multiple routes were proposed for the canal initially, including one that would have joined the River Ouse near Howden instead of the Derwent.

You haven’t been transported to Australia here, you’re just in the East Riding countryside. Here’s MELBOURNE.

Places to see in ( Driffield - UK )

Places to see in ( Driffield - UK )

Driffield, also known as Great Driffield, is a market town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The civil parish is formed by the town of Driffield and the village of Little Driffield.

By road, Driffield is located 70.4 miles (113.3 km) to the north-east of Sheffield, 52.8 miles (85.0 km) to the east of Leeds, 29.4 miles (47.3 km) to the east of York, 22.8 miles (36.7 km) to the north of Hull, 72.0 miles (115.9 km) south-west of Middlesbrough & 218.3 miles (351.3 km) to the north of London.

Driffield lies in the Yorkshire Wolds, on the Driffield Navigation (canal), and near the source of the River Hull. Driffield lies on the A614, A166 and B1249, and on the Yorkshire Coast rail line from Scarborough to Hull. It is situated next to Little Driffield, where King Aldfrith of Northumbria was reputedly buried, and is also very close to Nafferton, Hutton Cranswick and Wansford. Driffield is named the Capital of the Wolds, mainly through virtue of its favourable location between Bridlington, Beverley and York. The town is served by Driffield railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line.

Driffield contains a small community hospital, small fire station, police and ambulance stations, several churches - the largest being All Saints' Parish Church, whose bells were restored for the millennium - and a fairly small high street. There is also an area of parkland close to the parish church alongside the stream (Driffield Beck) that runs roughly parallel to the high street.

The town is home to Driffield Show, the country's largest one-day annual agricultural show, as well as the Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally - an event showcasing historical vehicles including traction engines, fairground organs, tractors and vintage cars. A particular focus is placed upon agricultural history, with demonstrations of ploughing and threshing often taking place. The rally is particularly known for the Saturday evening road-run of the steam engines and other vehicles into Driffield town centre, an event which invariably attracts large crowds of spectators.

( Driffield - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Driffield . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Driffield - UK

The most secluded, beautiful and impossible canal I've ever been on

Hi guyz thanks for reading this description. Honestly I've no idea if anyone reads it but here goes. This video was filmed in July when there was a series of heatwaves, so it was red hot hence the short cruising days. And it was the shallowest and weediest canal I've ever come across, but the scenery really made up for it.
Thank you to Emma and Sam from Pub of the Week Melbourne Arms, Malcolm, CRT, PCAS and all the new and old Crank It Crew members who support me on my journey. Right let's throw in some links...

is my website and it has links to everything including my music which I use on the videos and other stuff such as merchandise and my TV show Canal Boat Diaries.

Hope you enjoyed watching this video, it's part one so expect the next instalment in a week or so. Until then keep cranking! Cheers!

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

If you have any further visa questions visit the official UK government website.

Helmsley is a market town and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town is located at the point where Rye Dale leaves the moorland and joins the flat Vale of Pickering. The Cleveland Way National Trail starts at Helmsley, and follows a horseshoe loop around the North York Moors National Park and Yorkshire coast for 110 miles (180 km) to Filey. The remains of Helmsley Castle tower over the town.

It is situated on the River Rye on the A170 road, 14 miles (23 km) east of Thirsk, 13 miles (21 km) west of Pickering and some 24 miles (39 km) due north of York. The southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park passes through Helmsley along the A170 road so that the western part of the town is within the National Park.

The settlement grew around its position at a road junction and river crossing point. Helmsley is a compact town, retaining its medieval layout around its market place with more recent development to the north and south of its main thoroughfare, Bondgate. It is a historic town of considerable architectural character whose centre has been designated as a conservation area. The town is associated with the Earls of Feversham, whose ancestral home Duncombe Park was built overlooking Helmsley Castle. A statue of William Duncombe, 2nd Baron Feversham stands in the town's square. The town is a popular tourist centre and has won gold medals in the Large Village category of Yorkshire in Bloom for three years. The town square is a meeting place for motorcyclists as it is at the end of the B1257 road from Stokesley, which is a favourite with bikers.

Helmsley is situated on the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park approximately 200 feet (61 m) above sea level. The town's geology is sandstone. To the west and the north of the settlement the moorland areas are predominantly limestone. Helmsley lies in a hollow in undulating open countryside, flanked by heather moor to the north and the rolling farmland of the Howardian Hills to the south. The flat lowland of the Vale of Pickering stretches eastwards from the town towards Malton. The River Rye runs by the town to the south where it is joined at Rye Bridge by the Borough Beck flowing southwards through the town from the moors. Meadows south of the Rye form an important buffer and create an attractive setting for the town from the southern approach.

Helmsley Arts Centre has a 140-seat auditorium and 40-seat studio/exhibition space. It provides film screenings, live music, theatre performances, comedy clubs, art exhibitions and workshops/classes. The 1812 Theatre Company is the resident amateur theatre company at the centre. It mounts at least three productions per year in the main theatre and two in the studio. The 1812 Youth Theatre meets there on a regular basis, putting on two shows a year.

The five-acre (2 ha) Helmsley Walled Garden, originally built in 1756, is being restored as a working kitchen garden. A walled garden for the castle stood along the banks of the river to the south. Soon after the family moved out of the castle into Duncombe Park this walled garden was built. The garden incorporates glass houses designed in 1850 as a vine house. The ongoing programme of restoration uses appropriate plants where possible.

Helmsley has an open-air swimming pool and a recreation ground providing facilities for tennis, bowls, cricket and football. The Cleveland Way, a horseshoe-shaped route around the North York Moors National Park starts in Helmsley. It follows the moor's western escarpment to meet the coast at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and then follows the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast to end at Filey. Other places of interest include the International Centre for Birds of Prey, Rievaulx Abbey and Helmsley Arts Centre.

WARTER: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #85 of 172

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #85: WARTER

Our last venture into the East Yorkshire Wolds for a while sees us take on Warter, a village which will tie together a few things we’ve learned in some recent episodes

Warter is situated approximately 4 miles East of Pocklington and 18 miles from the city of York on the B1246. It’s an estate village whose origins can be traced back to the Middle Ages

The greater part of Warter was owned by the monks of Warter Priory, an Augustinian monastery that was established in 1132. The current church stands on the site of the former priory church

From around 1630 the Warter estate was owned by the Stapleton family from whom it passed by marriage in the late 17th century to Sir William Pennington of Muncaster Castle

The Penningtons lived part of the year at Muncaster Castle, part in London and part at Warter Hall, known as Warter Priory by 1840, a house they built a mile from the village

In later times, Charles Henry Wilson – the 1st Lord Nunburnholme, owned the Warter Estate. He was the liberal MP for Hull and the owner of the biggest shipping line in the world

Much like Nunburnholme, Warter’s residents were heavily involved in farming – which is still thing here but the majority of the residents no longer work on the land

It’s tiny place with less than 200 residents, but there’s a lot here. Let’s go!

COTTINGWITH: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #37 of 172

For a small village this has a lot of history, some of which is very ancient and you can’t even see traces of. The parish council’s website has a book you can purchase about the village’s history. Something else you can buy is a calendar, on sale for £5 from the village hall trustees. It’s clear this parish is one that is well loved by its residents.

Perhaps the biggest piece of history isn’t even located in the main village. On Ball Hall Lane was built as a prisoner of war camp, which housed German and Italian prisoners. Some of the Italians were accomplished artists. There’s a statuesque fountain that they built on site. Nearby is a circular brick building which was a sewerage works for the camp - the first mains sewerage system in the Parish!

Wartime history is something you see a lot of here. As well as the POW camp, if you look closely enough you might be lucky to spot the air raid shelter that apparently hides behind a local's house on Church Lane...that is if the structure we see here is in fact one. I wasn't totally sure of it. Regardless, there's some great views over the Derwent Ings - that I'm totally sure about!

The Village Hall is one of the village’s most important buildings. It served as the primary school until the late 1960s. Awards were given to children with the best attendance, the idea was to encourage them to attend school rather than being used as farm labourers. More significantly, the hall was built originally as the first registered Friends Meeting House in the East Riding, and the garden is a Quaker burial ground.

Welcome to the parish which houses the Western extent of the Pocklington Canal – COTTINGWITH.
