Passau, Germany: Things To Do In The City Of Three Rivers [Travel Guide]
This time, we stopped in the small city, colourful city of Passau, Germany. The city lies very close to the Austrian border and is also the point where THREE major rivers - the Ilz, Danube, and Inn - meet!
From a stunning cathedral to the charming old town, we had a really relaxing time exploring the city when we visited at the start of September! We even got the chance to hike up to the Veste Oberhaus - a fortress that is over 800 years old - and enjoyed a drink with amazing views! Passau is also a popular stop for Danube river cruises so if you're visiting Passau (for whatever reason), this video should give you a snapshot of what to expect!

One of the MOST PICTURESQUE Cities along the Danube River | PASSAU, GERMANY
Passau is a picturesque city located in the South Eastern part of Germany in the state of Bavaria. The city borders Austria and the state capitol Munich is about a 2 hour drive away.
We’ll start the city tour at the Veste Oberhaus, a 13th century fortress located atop a hill just north of the Danube river.
We’ll continue to the Pilgrimage church of Mariahilf located in the Innstadt, just south of the river Inn. Afterwards, I’ll take you on a walking tour loop through the Innstadt and crossing over a bridge above the Inn river.
Next we’ll explore the city center which comprises the Neumarkt and Altstadt, which is the old town known for its baroque architecture, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral featuring one of the biggest organs in the world.
At the eastern tip of Old town is where the river Danube is joined by the Inn from the south and Ilz from the north giving Passau its Nickname Drei-Fluesse-Stadt which means “City of Three Rivers”.
At the end of the tour we’ll return to Veste Oberhaus for spectacular nighttime views of the city.

My first stop in Europe well on an assignment for Viking River Cruises was the town of Passau, Germany which is in the heart of Bavaria. The town is a travel photographer's dream. It is just a fantastic place to shoot images. Passau has plenty of fantastic views to keep you occupied. It also has beautiful architecture, interesting streets, good food, and markets. Of course, it's also Christmas season in Europe, so I had the chance to visit the Bavarian Christmas market, and sample some of the local grub. All in all, Passau, Germany was absolutely brilliant. It's one of those places that just defines this part of Europe. In many ways, it's the typical Bavarian town, and in other ways it's just so unique. It's one of those European towns that I'd love to spend a week or two just exploring the streets and creating images. But, alas, my time in Passau had to be fairly short as I only had a day and a half before my ship set sail for my next destination.

Walking in PASSAU / Germany ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Passau / Germany is a Bavarian city at the Austrian border. Passau is called the City of Three Rivers as it lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers.
On our tour we start at the St. Stephen's Cathedral, featuring distinctive onion-domed towers and an organ with 17,974 pipes. We walk down to the banks of the Inn river and check out the the old town which is known for its baroque architecture.
Soon we are at the Three River Conjunction (Dreiflüsseeck) from where we walk back along the Danube (Donau) river on the Donaukai. This leads us back to the central city where we get to the train station and end our Passau tour.

Passau was founded by the Celts more than 2,000 years ago and is one of Bavaria's oldest cities. It rests at the confluence of the Inn (think Innsbruck), Ilz and Danube Rivers.

Hals is a neighborhood in the northern area of Passau, whose geography is strongly influenced by the river Ilz.
There is a medieval settlement at the current site of the Burgruine Hals at the narrowest point of the Halser Ilzschleifen. The town was the seat of the Lord of Hals, which was his earldom in 1280. In 1376 the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV granted them a charter to the town and also provided it with coining rights (Münzrecht) until 1497.
In 1803 the area was part of the royal district court of Passau. 1810 the town was devastated, as it was many times before, by a fire. Most of the remaining houses in the town, including the parish, were built shortly after the fire. In 1825, Hals received the status of a III Class town.
Since the Middle Ages timber rafting was an important economic factor for Hals. The powerful levees (Tiftsperre) were developed and the existing 115 m long tunnel was constructed from 1827 to 1831.
