Transfagarasan in Romania is the world's best road trip according to Top Gear. In September 2018 we had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours and film this magnificent road with our drone, in HDR!

Am prins o zi de exceptie din punct de vedere al vremii si am pornit sa escaladam cele doua varfuri: Varful Moldoveanu si Varful Vistea Mare.
Am plecat din Sibiu, am mers pana la orasul Victoria, apoi spre Valea Vistisoarei si de acolo direct in creasta Fagarasului. In aprox 11 ore am reusit sa urcam si sa coboram de pe Varful Moldoveanu.

The second main stop over during our road trip is the Balea Lake. It is at the top end of the Transfagarasan Road. The view of the entire Transfagarasan Road is truly amazing!! You will see a lot of nature. From flocks of sheep, goats, waterfall, pine trees, forests, lakes, mountains, snow, etc. Cruising is the best way to drive whilst admiring the beauty of nature here. Munții Ciucaș m-au cucerit de data aceasta. Traseul urmat a fost cel care pornește din Pasul Bratocea marcat cu bandă roșie către Țiglăile Mari, Cabana Vf. Ciucaș, Muntele Roșu și la final Cabana Muntele Roșu.

Muzeul de la Piscu - un loc incarcat de istorie si patrimoniu cultural
În apropierea Bucureștiului, la Piscu in comunca Ciolpani, s-a construit o școală în care educația tradițională se va împleti cu experiențele de învățare non-formală, oferindu-le viitorilor elevi prilejul să observe, să analizeze și să interacționeze cu bogățiile culturale și naturale din locurile în care trăiesc. „Școala din Muzeu” – Piscu își propune să valorifice patrimoniul cultural local al satului Piscu din județul Ilfov, singurul din regiune în care mai există meșteri care practică olăritul, un meșteșug tradițional aflat aproape pe cale de dispariție.

Vidraru Lake & Dam | Road Trip in the Fagaras Mountains of Romania
An hour at Vidraru Lake and Vidraru Dam - a spectacular lake in the Fagaras Mountains created by Romania’s largest dam project. I visited the viewing platform & learnt about its history.

The second stop of my road trip on the Transfăgărășan Highway was Vidraru Dam and Lake, I was lucky enough to take a walk around the area and even up to the viewing platform to get some great panoramic shots of both. It was a sunny day and I was even able to fly the drone up above the lake so I could get a bird's eye view of the whole area. The Fagaras Mountains are immense!
Vidraru is the largest dam in Romania and stands at an impressive height of 166 metres. It creates a reservoir (Vidraru Lake) that is over 10 km in length and 2 km wide. Vidraru Dam took five and half years to build and was completed in 1966.
It’s quite a sight to see the Transfăgărășan Highway weaving across the top and around the lake. After a few hours of exploring I continued my Romanian road trip heading north towards Piscu Negru and the Capra Tunnel.

Făgăraș Mountains: Piscul Negru - Vf. Negoiu
The 2nd highest peak in Romania after Moldoveanu, Negoiu (2535 m), and a beautiful but hard trail, are located in Southern Carpathians, in the Făgăraș Mountains. We almost reached the peak before a sprained ankle cut our journey off the mountain towards the end of the summer season, but we promised ourselves to return in a few years.
There are a few ways you can get back to the start point, either a circular trail or out-and-back. If you chose the circular trail you can either include Lespezi Peak (2522 m) or bypass it.
Elevation: +1620/-1610m
Duration: 10-12 hrs
Overall difficulty: hard

Cu cei 2.517 m ai săi, vârful Lespezi este unul dintre cele mai râvnite vârfuri din țară. Pe mine ceea ce m-a captivat la el a fost priveliștea pe care poate să o ofere. Dar nu are rost să zic eu acum mai multe, las filmul să vorbească de la sine.

The Transfăgărășan, Romania - Facts (Pentru Limba romana apăsați pe subtitrare)
The Transfăgărășan or DN7C is a paved mountain road crossing the southern section of the Carpathian Mountains of Romania
It has a national-road ranking and is the second-highest paved road in the country after the Transalpina.
It starts near the village of Bascov, near Pitești, and stretches 90 kilometers (or 56 mi) to the crossroad between the DN1 and Sibiu, between the highest peaks in the country, Moldoveanu, and Negoiu
The road, built in the early 1970s as a strategic military route, connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia
It was constructed between 1970 and 1974, at the orders of Nicolae Ceausescu. The road was meant to have strategic importance and it was going to be used in case of a Soviet invasion
It’s one of the many grandiose projects completed by Ceausescu, together with the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest and the Danube – Black Sea Canal
Built mainly by military forces, the road had a high financial and human cost
Work was carried out in an alpine climate, at an elevation of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft), using roughly six million kilograms of dynamite, and employing junior military personnel, who were untrained in blasting techniques. Many workers died; official records state that only 40 soldiers lost their lives, but unofficial estimates by workers put the number in the hundreds
The road was finished on September 20th, 1974 but paving the road took another 4 years, meaning that Transfagarasan, as we know it today, was finalized in 1980
An interesting fact is that construction started at both sides of the mountain at the same time. The road was completed when the workers met and the road was finally united. Today, you can find the Poarta Intalniri monument (The Meeting Gate) marking that place
The road was officially opened on 20 September 1974, although work, particularly paving of the roadbed, continued until 1980
The road climbs to an altitude of 2,042 meters (or 6,699 ft), making it the second-highest mountain pass in Romania after the Transalpina.
It is a winding road, dotted with steep hairpin turns, long S-curves, and sharp descents
It is both an attraction and a challenge for hikers, cyclists, drivers, and motorcycle enthusiasts.
Due to the topography, the average speed is around 40 km/h (or 25 mph). The road also provides access to Bâlea Lake and Bâlea Waterfall
The best time to visit is From late autumn to late spring, Transfagarasan is closed to the public. You can only reach Piscu Negru (in the southern part) or Balea-Cascada Cabin (in the northern part of the road) by car. The road is closed due to heavy snow. If you plan to visit in autumn or spring, it’s best to consult with the local authorities to see if Transfagarasan is open
However, if you want to get to Balea Lake in winter you can always take the cable car. There’s even an ice hotel at Balea Lake, very popular among locals.
The Transfăgărășan has more tunnels (a total of 5) and viaducts than any other road in Romania. Near the highest point, at Bâlea Lake, the road passes through Bâlea Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in Romania at 884 m (or 2,900 ft)
Good to know – even during summer, Transfagarasan is closed from 10 pm to 6 am
Interesting facts about Transfagarasan:
It has the longest road tunnel in Romania – 887 meters – Capra Tunnel.
Transfagarasan is 91 kilometers long.
The highest point is at 2042 meters (Transalpina‘s highest point is at 2145 meters).
The road has 833 small bridges and 28 viaducts

Traseul spre vârfurile Prislopului, Gălbinarea și Măgura Mare pornește de la Fântâna lui Botorog. Este o zonă nu foarte frecventată, unde m-am bucurat de multă liniște și peisaje de vis doar pentru mine. Ador să descopăr zone din acestea care nu sunt virale să zic așa, unde liniștea este la ea acasă.
