The Perfect Germany Road Trip | Bavaria, Mountains & Lakes Guide

Welcome back to Germany everybody! After visiting this beautiful country last year we have been planning our return trip - this time to German Bavaria to chase mountains and lakes

Where we stayed Haus Sonnenschein:

Our journey started in Bratislava, Slovakia where we boarded a bus to Vienna Airport, caught a flight to Stutgart, Germany and drove across the country towards Eibsee Lake - big travel day but so worth it for the views of Zugspitze Mountain.

After checking into our cute Airbnb we found a German pub serving pizza, crashed for the night and woke up to miserable weather. But we still wanted to conquer a German mountain here in the Bavarian Alps...it just happens to be Wank mountain...yep.

What a shocking day here in Germany - but so worth it!

MONREAL GERMANY - A Beautiful Picturesque Town In The Eifel 8K

Monreal is a beautiful picturesque town in the Eifel in Germany. The beautiful half-timbered houses, the castles and the authentic atmosphere make Monreal a must to visit when you are in the Eifel.

Monreal is located in the Volcanic Eifel , a beautiful and interesting area of the Eifel. The idyllic town is located about 7 kilometers from Mayen, another beautiful and interesting place in the Eifel.

The Eifel Museum Mayen is located here, among other things . Furthermore, for example, a well-known tourist place such as Cochem is only 25 kilometers to the south. Monreal is located in the Elztal where the small river Elz (Elzbach) flows.

The history of Monreal in brief.
Monreal is already a very old town. Finds prove that the place already existed before the era. Officially (in writing) Monreal “pas” was first mentioned in the year 1229.

Monreal was then called Mons regalis, meaning King's Mountain. Around this time, Count Philipp von Virneburg transferred the area to his brother Hermann. In his order, the castle was also built to protect the place.

The place has two castles, the Löwenburg (also called Burg Monreal) and the Philippsburg.

In 1306 Monreal already received city rights. The market rights did not follow until 1642. The town was part of the Archdiocese of Trier.

However, the Count of Virneburg also had a good relationship with the Archdiocese of Cologne (Köln), which in turn led to conflicts with Trier, after which Trier decided to place its own people on the castle in Monreal.

Löwenstein Castle has had to endure a lot. The castle was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1632 and in 1689 it was the French who destroyed the Löwenburg.

When the 30-year war was over, an important cloth / textile industry developed in Monreal. Due to the large sheep herds around the picturesque place in the Eifel, there was of course a lot of wool available. This brought a lot of prosperity to the place and trade flourished.

Towards the end of the 19th century, however, trade collapsed due to strong competition from abroad. Soon all trade collapsed and the place grew poorer.

Hidden Gem - Monreal - Eifel Germany

Enjoy the unmatched charms of the exceptionally well preserved medieval architecture. A true hidden gem of the Eifel Park region in Germany

The red and white half-timbered houses nest close together. The village of Monreal a lont the Elzbach brook is a fairytale. It lies in the valley under two castle ruins. Up in the hills are the ruins of Löwenburg and Philippsburg.

The still beautifully preserved half-timbered houses bear witness to the prosperity that Monreal achieved through the processing of sheep's wool and the manufacture of cloth from the 17th century onwards.

Monreal is located in the Eifel region. That is a region in the west of Germany, bordering Luxembourg, Belgium and The Netherlands. The city of Aachen is at the northern end of the region. Aachen is where the throne of Charlemagne is located - the Holy Roman Empire. To the West is the magnificent city of Trier - once a regional capital of the Roman Empire. To the Eest lies Koblenz from where the Moselle river meanders towards and into France.

Monreal was a significant center of trade and commerce during the Middle Ages. Its strategic location along trade routes contributed to its prosperity, and remnants of this past can still be seen in the village's well-preserved buildings and fortifications.

Due to its remarkable architectural heritage and historical significance, Monreal has been designated as a monument conservation area (Denkmalzone) by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. This designation ensures the preservation of the village's unique character for future generations to enjoy.

Monreal, the exquisite hidden gem of the Eifel region in Germany.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and Restaurant Hanoi - Germany 4K Travel Channel

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress lies on the right bank of the Rhine on a 180 m high hill whose rock faces drop steeply towards the Rhine.
The first documented settlements existed as early as 4000 BC. Chr. A fortification existed here in the Bronze Age. The Romans built a citadel, and afterward, by the year 1000, a castle was built here. Around 1020, the archbishop of Trier purchased the castle. Later, one kept some relics from the city of Trier here. In the 16th century, one converted the castle into a fortress, which then had several owners. The French troops, the archbishops of Trier, as well as the imperial troops, conquered the region and the fortress.
At the end of the 18th century, the French conquered the fortress after a one-year siege. By the Peace of Lunéville in 1801, the French had to vacate the right bank of the Rhine, and with it the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Upon withdraw, they blew up the fortress and also destroyed the Philippsburg Castle at the foot of the ridge. In 1815, the property passed to the Kingdom of Prussia through the Congress of Vienna. The Prussian military then built the citadel as we know it today.
We use the cable car to cross the Rhine and reach Ehrenbreitstein fortress. At the top, there is a spacious meadow, laid out for defense purposes. In 2011, it was the centerpiece of the Federal Garden Show. There is also an inclined lift on the eastern side of the castle. However, it can only be reached in the valley by car, bus, or on foot.
Through the main entrance, the field gate, we enter the complex and find ourselves directly opposite massive walls.
By various courtyards, through gates and passage, we reach the upper courtyard of the castle, a large square. From its eastern edge, one has a beautiful view of the city of Koblenz and the Rhine.
Directly on the opposite side is the German Corner, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine, with the equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I.
Today the premises house a youth hostel and the Koblenz State Museum. Various exhibitions show weapons and military technology, but also many archaeological finds from the region. The detention cells, as well as the description of the conditions of detention, are also remarkable.
The biggest cannon, called Greif, was cast in Frankfurt in 1524. It weighs 9 tons and is over 5 m long. With 40 kg of black powder, it can shoot 80 kg balls.
