We LOVE visiting the best small towns in America. On our way home from biking the Natchez Trace Parkway we stopped in Laurel, Mississippi to see what makes this small town authentically wonderful. While the HGTV show “Hometown” is based here, the town’s revitalization both in business and real estate in Laurel goes back before the show ever hit TV. People love this town because for many, it’s home. It’s a place where friends gather, businesses grow, and people invest in the town that they all have in common.
From delicious cookies at Sweet Somethings Bakery and shopping at Southern Antiques, to strolling the giant oak lined streets of some of the best neighborhoods in Laurel, MS surrounded by some of the prettiest houses in Laurel, our one day in this town wasn’t long enough. We could have visited for days to meet more locals and eat and shop more of the best local places. Are you thinking about retiring soon? Are you looking for an affordable town to retire in? Maybe you aren't retiring but still looking for a nice town where you can afford a home. If you are in those situations this video is for you.
We researched the Southern United States looking for the best towns someone could survive on Social Security only. That monthly check is currently $1658 a month. We looked at Cost of Living, housing, health care deductibles, insurance, and Utilities. These towns are the best bet for the average person on Social Security or some other sort of fixed income.
Most of these towns have homes for sale that can fit your budget. A Real Estate purchase in some of these towns is almost cheaper than renting.
Today we are looking at the Southern States. Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Kentucky. Virginia and West Virginia should be on this list but some consider those part of the North Atlantic.
Side Note: This is focusing on residential real estate not commercial. People keep asking that for some reason. These are just the affordable and best places to retire or live in the southern United States.

Here’s a quick taste: Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage. This museum is located within the Red Cliffs Lodge, which are both part of the Red Cliffs Ranch. This ranch has been a filming location for many films. Some of the most notable films that were shot on this ranch include, Warlock, Geronimo, Rio Grande and Thelma & Louise. In the late 1940’s, the legendary filmmaker John Ford discovered the rugged beauty of Moab’s canyonlands and filmed the first of many movies at the ranch. Hollywood stars such as John Wayne, Henry Ford, James Stewart, Anthony Quinn and Rock Hudson have all worked on location at Red Cliffs Ranch. What's a place you visited as a kid that you went back to or still want to go back to as an adult? For me it was Kashmir!! I remember it so clearly as a child. The snow capped mountains, the shikara ride! I always wondered if Kashmir was over rated. But let me tell you Kashmir is Under Rated!!! And for those asking me if it's safe? Yes I feel very safe here. also - more than the natural beauty -The people are the sweetest and the most hospitable I've met anywhere.
1. Gandola ride to reach pahse 1 & 2. watching this beautiful view from a top view was wonderful.
2. Apharwat peah: So many Fauji points.
3. Kabootar valley: Wow, double decker skiing was fun and snow sledging. Although I was scare at the strated but I highly recommend you for it! It was so much fun!
4. Watching purple flowers bloom all around during summers. If you visit Kashmir around summers, you will witness these beautiful flowers all around!
5. Kashmiri Men: Which state in India has the Most Handsome Men? And Most Beautiful Women? For me, I think Kashmir wins for the handsome men :) This is the only state in India where I think the men are more gorgeous than the women.
6. Shikara Ride: It's so dreamy to watch the sun go down sitting in the shikara and sipping hot kawa.
7. Dal Lake: you will see a number on things people do on the dal lake from enjoying kababs to smoking hookas!
8. Floating market: Name things you have it all here
9. Houseboat: It's a luxurious experience staying in these hoouseboats. Owners have to inherit it and cannot buy.
10. Pari Mahal: Pari Mahal or Peer Mahal, also known as The Palace of Fairies, is a seven-terraced garden located at the top of Zabarwan mountain range. It is an example of Islamic architecture and patronage of art during the reign of the then Mughal Emperor khan Shah Jahan.
