Madurai is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarters of Madurai District. As of the 2011 census, it was the third largest Urban agglomeration in Tamil Nadu after Chennai and Coimbatore and the 44th most populated city in India. Located on the banks of River Vaigai, Madurai has been a major settlement for two millennia. It is often referred to as Thoonga Nagaram, meaning the city which never sleeps.
Madurai is closely associated with the Tamil language, and the third Tamil Sangam, a major congregation of Tamil scholars said to have been held in the city. The recorded history of the city goes back to the 3rd century BCE, being mentioned by Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador to the Maurya empire, and Kautilya, a minister of the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya. Signs of human settlements and Roman trade links dating back to 300 BCE are evident from excavations by Archeological Survey of India in Manalur. The city is believed to be of significant antiquity and has been ruled, at different times, by the Pandyas, Cholas, Madurai Sultanate, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Carnatic kingdom, and the British East India Company British Raj.
Usilampatti is a town and a second grade municipality in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also a designated taluk and revenue division. Usilampatti town lies 28 km south west of Theni town and 38 km west of Madurai city on the NH 49 road. The town has a population of 30601 as per the 2001 census. Physical feature is the Madurai–Bodinayakkanur meter gauge railway line, which runs parallel to the Madurai–Usilampatti road, bifurcating the developed area of the town. The lands which lies in between railway line and Peraiyur road and Battalakundu road, are mostly of wet lands which restrict the development of the town in the southern direction. Hence, the town is likely to expand along both sides of Peraiyur roads and Madurai roads only. Madurai road has been elevated as NH 49 (Extension) (Rameswaram to Kochi) passing through this town is an important feature of the town.
Andipatti or Aundipatty is a municipal in Theni district in Madurai Region Tamil Nadu state in southern India. It is on the bank of Vaigai River with rich flora and fauna species. It is a valley surrounded by mountains and there is a theory saying Western Ghats starts from this place. Agriculture is the main economy of the town with handloom and textile mills spread across the city limits. Nearby places include Theni, Madurai, Cumbum, Nadukkottai and Gudalur. The town is known all over the state and country as having been the constituency of the two chief ministers: M. G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa. There is an NGO based in Aundipatty called Arogya Agam, which is involved in rural healthcare and women development and empowerment.
Theni District is one of the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu state in India. Theni district is located beside Madurai district. The town of Theni is the district headquarters. The district is divided into two natural divisions: The hilly areas are constituted by parts of the five taluk's Theni, Bodinayakanur, Periyakulam, Uthamapalayam and Andipatti with thick vegetation and perennial streams from the hills on the western side and Cumbum valley which lies in Uthamapalayam taluk. This project helped more people to settle down in Cumbum Valley. Also to be noted that Theni was itself was a small though lesser-known town by the 1900s. After the Mullai-Periyar merger project, many people from nearby arid regions (Sivakasi, Kovilpatti, Virudhunagar, Sattur and several nearby towns) settled in Cumbum Valley (present day Theni District). So there was influx of people by the 1890s to 1920s. Bodi and Periyakulam were famous places at that time.
Bodinayakanur is the second largest and most populated town in Theni district; the town is the taluk headquarters. Due to the weather and natural environment, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, called the town as South Kashmir. A town located on the foothills of the Western Ghats, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. This town is surrounded by (and has views of) the ranges of the Western Ghats on three sides. Theni, the nearest market town is 16 km from Bodi.
Munnar is a town and hill station located in the Idukki district of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. Munnar is situated at around 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) above mean sea level,[2] in the Western Ghats mountain range. Munnar is also called the Kashmir of South India and is a popular honeymoon destination.
