Pennsville is a township in Salem County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The township is named for William Penn and includes the state's westernmost point. Lower Penns Neck Township was formed on July 10, 1721, when Penn's Neck Township was subdivided and Upper Penns Neck Township (now Carneys Point Township) was formed. The township was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey's original group of 104 townships. The township was renamed Pennsville Township based on the results of a referendum held on November 2, 1965.

Wilmington Downtown As of the 2019 United States Census estimate, the city's population is 70,166.[4] It is the fifth least populous city in the U.S. to be the most populous in its state.[citation needed] The Wilmington Metropolitan Division, comprising New Castle County, DE, Cecil County, MD and Salem County, NJ, had an estimated 2016 population of 719,887.[7] The Delaware Valley metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Camden, New Jersey, had a 2016 population of 6,070,500, and a combined statistical area of 7,179,357.
Wilmington is built on the site of Fort Christina and the settlement Kristinehamn,[9] the first Swedish settlement in North America. The modern city also encompasses other Swedish settlements, such as Timmerön / Timber Island (along Brandywine Creek), Sidoland (South Wellington), Strandviken (along the Delaware River near Simonds Garden) and Översidolandet (along the Christina River, near Woodcrest and Ashley Heights).
The area now known as Wilmington was settled by the Lenape (or Delaware Indian) band led by Sachem (Chief) Mattahorn just before Henry Hudson sailed up the Len-api Hanna (People Like Me River, present Delaware River) in 1609. The area was called Maax-waas Unk or Bear Place after the Maax-waas Hanna (Bear River) that flowed by (present Christina River). It was called the Bear River because it flowed west to the Bear People, who are now known as the People of Conestoga or the Susquehannocks.[citation needed]
The Dutch heard and spelled the river and the place as Minguannan. When settlers and traders from the Swedish South Company under Peter Minuit arrived in March 1638 on the Fogel Grip and Kalmar Nyckel, they purchased Maax-waas Unk from Chief Mattahorn and built Fort Christina at the mouth of the Maax-waas Hanna (which the Swedes renamed the Christina River after Queen Christina of Sweden). The area was also known as The Rocks, and is located near the foot of present-day Seventh Street. Fort Christina served as the headquarters for the colony of New Sweden which consisted of, for the most part, the lower Delaware River region (parts of present-day Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey), but few colonists settled there.[10][11] Dr. Timothy Stidham (Swedish:Timen Lulofsson Stiddem) was a prominent citizen and doctor in Wilmington. He was born in 1610, probably in Hammel, Denmark and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden. He arrived in New Sweden in 1654 and is recorded as the first physician in Delaware

In 1675, what is now known as Carney’s Point, New Jersey was purchased by John Fenwick, a Quaker, from the Lenni Lenape tribe for 2 ankers of rum, 8 knives, and 3 pairs of scissors and then resold to William Penn in 1682. In 1725, 2 Irish immigrants, Thomas Carney and William Summerill purchased the land around Helm’s Cove (Carney’s Point – Penns Gove). An estate was established, including a mill and a wharf. Hannah Carney, Carney granddaughter, married Colonel Robert G. Johnson. Although there is some question as to the legitimacy of this claim, Johnson is credited with bolstering Salem County agriculture by introducing the tomato. Legend has it that in July of 1820, in order to disprove The Colonists belief that this love apple” was poisonous, Johnson ate a tomato as he sat on the front steps of his house while a large crowd watched in horror. When he didn’t drop dead, one of Salem County most important crops was established. In 1826, Johnson organized Salem County’s first agricultural and horicultural society and in 1845, he helped organize the NJ Historical Society.
By 1869, the son of Carney and Johson sold the 200 acre estate. The land was purchased by the E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company in 1891, a land transfer that would forever change Salem County. DuPont purchased the site to produce smokeless gunpowder and built it up slowly as adjoining land became available. With the outbreak of World War I, the demand for the gunpowder increased dramatically and in less than a year, the population in the area grew from 2,000 to 10,000 people. By1917, DuPont had expanded to 67 times its pre-war capacity and employed 25,000 people. By the 1960’s, DuPont Chamber Works was the largest chemical factory in the world and employed 25 percent of the households in Salem County.
At a general election held on November 2, 1976, the citizens of Upper Penn’s Neck Township in Salem County voted 1931 to 887 in favor of changing the township’s name to Carney’s Point Township.

05/12/2013 - Mom and Gloria are at the hotel in Wilmington, sleeping. She is recovering from the marathon. I took the boys over the Delaware Memorial Bridge to New Jersey. We played at a park then went for ice cream. It became a chilly evening, however, after a spring cool front came through.

Philadelphia South Clarksboro KOA. Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Valley Forge, Fort Mott SP.
SO many things to see here. This campground is a great place to visit these sites, and more, within a 40 minute drive either direction. This is a nice clean campground with all the amenities you or a family could need.
We are into history rather than playgrounds, bouncy things, and campgrounds in general. So we ventured into Philly for Independence Hall, Benjamin Franklin Museum, and seeing the Liberty Bell. It took about 40 minutes to drive into town and get parked. Absolutely do not try to drive your camper or rig into town! Even the parking building we went in had a clearance of 6'6. Our truck is 18' long, and barely made the turns inside the parking structure. It makes for a good 6 hours+ of visiting the sites per day. Avoid rush hour if you can, it is insane here. No one drives the speed limit. KNOW your turns in advance due to thick traffic.
Valley Forge is a must. It is a gorgeous setting and the history we learned was amazing. I sure didn't pay attention in school, but in truth, we weren't presented with all this information. Easy 40+ minutes drive north to this location. The driving tour is so nice, take a picnic lunch and get out and enjoy this drive.
Fort Mott State Park was COOL! A perfect easy 25 mile drive away. A lesser known Park in my estimation. Take a picnic lunch with you and walk the grounds and visit the area. It was a nice relaxing drive here and on the return coming back through Salem and Millville north east. Quaint country side, vegetable markets and less traffic. Also, it was great to drive at speeds that were slower through this area.
