Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September.
Some islands see almost no rain, these are Sal, Boa Vista and Maio; these are arid. The islands with the most rain fall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao, but are nonetheless semi-arid.
Cape Verde is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets. The main islands are (clockwise from northwest):
Santo Antão - Great hiking.
São Vicente - With the cultural capital of Mindelo.
Santa Luzia - Santa Luzia is uninhabited but can be visited as a day trip from São Vicente.
São Nicolau - Rural mountainous island based on agriculture. A quiet and relaxed get away.
Sal - Has great beaches, water sports and resorts aplenty.
Boa Vista - Even nicer beaches. Great scuba diving
Maio - Even more nice beaches.
Santiago Island - The first island settled in Cape Verde. It holds the current capital Praia, the original capital Cidade Velha, and the bulk of the nation's population.
Fogo - A spectacular volcano island which erupted as recently as November 2014.
Brava - A small island only accessible by boat and is a great place to get away from it all.
There are 24 cities in Cape Verde.

The official language is Portuguese, used in all official publications and announcements as well as in business, media and schools, but the local language is Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu kabuverdianu), a Portuguese-based creole language with 95% of the words from Portuguese and the rest mainly from West African languages. It is divided into 9 dialects spoken on various parts of the country. Even though Kriolu is comprehensible to a skilled Portuguese-speaker, almost all people can also speak Portuguese as a second language. French is also known by many, and some people also speak English.
It is a good idea to know some Kriolu or at least Portuguese, since even though young urban people are often quite proficient in English, this does not apply to old and rural people, and even those who can speak English will highly appreciate any attempt you do to speak Kriolu or Portuguese.

Praia, Cape Verde 2021 COVID Drone Travel Vlog |Cidade Velha| Pico Da Antonia| Part 1
I went on an amazing trip to Cape Verde during the Covid 19 Pandemic in May. I flew here from Senegal with Air Senegal. To get in the country I did not need a Visa as an American. However, I did need a negative Covid test 72 hours before. Praia is a beautiful city on mainland Santiago. Accommodations were taken care of by one of the travelers on this trip whose family is from Cape Verde. Their family showed us around on the island. Shout out to Salo and Nilton. It is situated on the east coast, 1.5 km northwest of Achada Baleia, 11 km southeast of Pedra Badejo, 10 km east of São Domingos and 16 km north of the capital Praia. In 2010 its population was 952.
The beach of Praia Baixo is a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles. A protection program is organized by the University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal

Cape Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an archipelago and island country in the central Atlantic Ocean, consisting of ten volcanic islands with a combined land area of about 4,033 square kilometres (1,557 sq mi).[11] These islands lie between 600 to 850 kilometres (320 to 460 nautical miles) west of Cap-Vert situated at the westernmost point of continental Africa. The Cape Verde islands form part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited until the 15th century, when Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the islands, thus establishing the first European settlement in the tropics. Because the Cape Verde islands were ideally located to play a role in the Atlantic slave-trade, Cape Verde became economically prosperous during the 16th and 17th centuries, attracting merchants, privateers, and pirates. It declined economically in the 19th century due to the suppression of the Atlantic slave-trade, and many of its inhabitants emigrated during that period. However, Cape Verde gradually recovered economically by becoming an important commercial center and useful stopover point along major shipping routes. In 1951, Cape Verde was incorporated as an overseas department of Portugal, but its inhabitants continued to campaign for independence, which they achieved in 1975.

The island of Santiago was discovered by Diogo Gomes, a Portuguese, in 1460. Gomes settled at Ribeira Grande with his family members and Portuguese from Algarve and Alentejo in 1462. The settling conditions were good due to the abundance of water from the river Ribeira Grande, which gave it an advantage over the other settlement on Santiago, Alcatrazes. The settlement became a key port of call for Portuguese colonization towards Africa and South America. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was a centre of maritime trade between Africa, the Cape, Brazil and the Caribbean. Due to its proximity to the African coast, it was an essential platform for the trade of enslaved persons.
Cidade Velha's port was a stopping place for two great navigators: Vasco da Gama, in 1497, on his way to India, and Christopher Columbus, in 1498, while on his third voyage to the Americas. In 1522, it was the stopping place for the later explorer Ferdinand Magellan who served under Spain on his way to circumnavigate the world.
Cidade Velha has the oldest colonial church in the world - Nossa Senhora do Rosário church, which was constructed in 1495. In 1533, Cidade Velha became the seat of the new Roman Catholic Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde, created by papal bull of Pope Clement VII. Currently, the seat is in Praia.
The riches of Ribeira Grande and conflicts between Portugal and rival colonial powers France and Britain attracted pirate attacks, including those by Francis Drake (1585) and Jacques Cassard (1712). Despite the construction of Forte Real de São Filipe in 1587–93, Ribeira Grande remained vulnerable and went into decline. The capital was moved to Praia in 1770.
Ribeira Grande (now Cidade Velha) was reduced to the rank of a village and its civil, religious and military buildings went in decay. Since the 1960s, restoration works have begun. In 2009, it became a UNESCO's World Heritage site.
As of 2010, it has a population of over 1,200.

So far seven out of ten Cape Verdean islands I've sailed to and anchored, this may be the best spot to anchor. Santiago island is he largest of all the archipelago. There is much to see, and in this episode we see some more like the city of Assomada and then Cidada Velha, where I consider one of the best anchorages in Cape Verde.

No vídeo de hoje vamos fazer um vlog pelo bairro de Palmarejo Grande na cidade da Praia em Cabo Verde.
O Palmarejo Grande é um bairro relativamente novo, um dos mais novos da cidade. Tem crescido e urbanizado num ritmo acelerado, com ruas bem organizadas e moradias de padrão classe média alta. Uma das primeiras construções desse bairro (em 2001) foi a Universidade Jean Piaget de Cabo Verde, seguindo o centro educativo Miraflores. De lá para cá, o bairro ganhou grandes obras em termos de infraestruturas habitacionais, destacando o projeto Casa para Todos e Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo.
Hoje já é um bairro residencial com vários prédios e casas a surgirem a um ritmo acelerado. É um dos bairros que já é bastante procurada para investimentos e construções de moradias, assim como arrendamentos. Já dispõe hoje de ligação com transporte público de passageiros (autocarros linha 12) que fazem ligação com várias zonas da cidade, passando pelo centro da capital (Plateau) e também por Palmarejo.
Ainda no vlog fomos até as obras do novo campus da Universidade de Cabo Verde, que por sinal já se encontram em fases finais. É uma obra de grande dimensão que conta com o apoio da China para sua efetivação.
