Anyone could participate in the poll taking votes via internet or SMS services. So, the seven best-looking and really fascinating places were chosen. Here they are:

Exploring Vorkuta - Russian Ghost Town in Arctic | The Most Depressing Town in Russia

Despite the richest coal deposits that gave boost to the development of the city, Vorkuta and the adjacent settlements are rapidly emptying today. The mega project of the Soviet machine was not in demand among the heirs of the empire. Today, some districts of Vorkuta and surrounding villages are abandoned or are about to be completely deserted. How is Vorkuta living today? What's going on around her? What are the prospects for the main coal mining region in the north of Russia? I personally went to the Arctic to answer these questions.

Where Two Northern Russian Rivers meet: the Izhma and the Ukhta
The Izhma (531 km long) and the Ukhta (199 km long) are two rivers in the Republic of Komi in the North-West of Russia. The Izhma is a tributary of the Pechora River and the Ukhta is a tributary if the Izhma. In the video you can see the place where the two rivers meet at the town of Sosnogorsk and the settlement of Ust-Ukhta. We are on the bank where Ust-Ukhta is.

Welcome to Ekaterina's Vlog! On this channel, I am going to share my videos and information about the Russian North, that's where I live, and perhaps about other places in Russia as well. Enjoy my walking tours!

The area north of the Circle is about 20,000,000 km2 and covers roughly 4% of Earth's surface.

Only four million people live north of the Arctic Circle due to the severe climate; nonetheless, some areas have been settled for thousands of years by indigenous peoples, who today make up 10% of the region's population

The largest communities north of the Arctic Circle are situated in Russia and Norway:

Vorkuta: Fastest Dying City in Russia. From Coal Mine to Ghost Town | Built by Stalin’s Gulag

Vorkuta was once a real “place of power”: a thriving coal mining centre with good infrastructure and high salaries. Today, though, it is almost completely abandoned, with ruined houses and free real estate. The Soviet Union basically built the city that was doomed to collapse. How did it happen? What was the role of Stalin and his Gulag system in the history of Vorkuta? And what can be done now to save the city from extinction?

An island on the River Pechora

The River Pechora, Republic of Komi, Russia
July, 2010

Manpupuner rock formations, Russia. 16K 360 aerial video.

Russia offers a variety of natural, cultural and historical sites. Some of them are well known, others remain in the background. This AirPano video will tell you about a magnificent natural landmark worthy of global recognition: the Manpupuner rock formations, the stone idols in the Troitsko-Pechorsky district of the Republic of Komi. In 2008, the formations were recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Russia.

Don't forget that this is 360 video: you can change the angle of view.

We regularly publish new 360 videos of the most beautiful places on our planet!

YouTube does not support 16K 360 video yet, so the video was down-sampled from 16K to 8K. But still you need an extraordinary computer power for watching 8K 360° videos.

If you have troubles with watching such videos, choose 4K or HD quality in the settings of your YouTube player. We hope that YouTube will find a solution for optimization this videoformat to make it watchable for common users.

Also here is the answer for a frequently asked question about true resolution of an 8K 360° video. Unlike standard videos, in a 360° video you can see only a part of original image (approximately 30 degrees out of 360). As result, the real resolution of the part you can see isn't bigger than 1.3K.

====================================================================
Manpupuner, or Pillars of erosion (Mansi dummies), is a geological monument in the Troitsko-Pechora region of the Komi Republic of Russia. They are located on the territory of the Pechora-Ilych nature reserve on the Man-Pupu-ner mountain (in the Mansi language - small mountain of idols), in the interfluve of the Ilych and Pechora rivers. The second name - Dummy-iz in the Komi language means Mountain of idols; hence the popular name of the outliers - Blockheads. Manpupuner is a complex of seven outliers with a height of 30 to 42 m. Numerous legends are associated with Manpupuner. He was the object of the Mansi cult.

The weathering pillars of Manpupuner are considered one of the seven wonders of Russia.

Many thousands of years ago, there were high mountains in the place of stone pillars. Rain, snow, wind, frost and heat gradually destroyed the mountains and, first of all, the weak rocks. Hard sericite-quartzite schists, of which the remnants are composed, were less destroyed and survived to the present day, while soft rocks were destroyed by weathering and carried away by water and wind into lower relief.

One pillar, 34 meters high, stands somewhat apart from the others; it resembles a huge bottle turned upside down. Six others were lined up at the edge of the cliff. The pillars have bizarre outlines and, depending on the place of examination, resemble either the figure of a huge man, or the head of a horse or a ram. In past times, the Mansi deified grandiose stone statues, worshiped them, but climbing Manpupuner was the greatest sin.

They are located quite far from inhabited places, on the territory of the Pechora-Ilychsky nature reserve. Only trained tourists can get to the pillars. To do this, you need to get a pass from the administration of the reserve, because the entrance to the territory of the federal reserves is allowed only with passes. From the side of the Sverdlovsk Region and the Perm Territory there is a walking route, from the side of the Komi Republic - a mixed route - automobile, water, walking route.

Ten Strangest Places In The World To Visit

Ten Strangest Places In The World To Visit. Where words fail, pictures do the trick. This video shows the photographic evidence to understand the baffling beauty and sublime grace of some of the strangest places on earth. Enjoy travelling to ten of the strangest places on earth to visit.

1. Avatar Mountains, Zhangjiajie National Park, China
Located in the Hunan province of south-central China, the park is more commonly known as Avatar Mountains, thanks to its uncanny resemblance with Pandora Mountains, featured in James Cameron's Avatar. Zhangjiajie is located in the northwest of Hunan Province, over 1,000 kilometres from both Shanghai and Beijing. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was the first national park in China, established in 1982

2. Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Waitomo, New Zealand
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves attraction is a cave at Waitomo on the North Island of New Zealand. Under the green hills of Waitomo lies a labyrinth of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers. But what is really special is its population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species found exclusively in New Zealand.

3. Derweze, Turkmenistan-The door to hell
Derweze is a village in Turkmenistan of about 350 inhabitants, located in the middle of the Karakum Desert, about 260 km north of Ashgabat. According to the Smithsonian magazine, a group of Soviet geologists accidentally created the crater, searching for oil, which has been burning since 1971 caused by the methane.

4. Deadvlei-The Dead Marsh
Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. This area boasts some of the largest sand dunes in the world and is a major tourist attraction in Namibia.

5. Underwater waterfall, Le Morne, Mauritius
According to the Scienceblogs website, the underwater waterfall, is actually sand from the shores of Mauritius being driven via ocean currents off of that high, coastal shelf, and down into the darker ocean depths off the southern tip of the island. It plunges 11,500 feet (3,505 meters) straight down from the Greenland Sea into the Irminger Sea, carrying around 175 million cubic feet (5 million cubic meters) of water per second — which is considerably larger than any giant waterfall on land.

6. Firefall, Yosemite National Park, California
Firefall is the name for the natural phenomena that creates the illusion at the park in California. It comes to life when the setting sun causes light to hit the waterfall at just the right angle. This can only see Firefall for a short time in February, which draws hundreds of visitors each night.

7. Spotted Lake, northwest of Osoyoos
Spotted Lake is located northwest of Osoyoos in the eastern Similkameen Valley of British Columbia, Canada. It is a small lake rich in a variety of minerals, including calcium, sodium sulphates and magnesium sulphate. During the hot summer months, much of the water in the lake evaporates, leaving concentrations of these minerals that form the spots visible in the lake.

8. Manpupuner rock formations, Northern Urals, Russia
The Manpupuner rock formations (“Seven Giants” or “7 Strong Men” or “Poles of the Komi Republic”) are seven randomly shaped stone pillars of weathering located inside the Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve, the Northern Ural, Russia. Local legend has it that they are the remains of seven Samoyed giants. They were on a forced march through the Urals, heading across the mountain ranges to decimate the Vogulsky people. Their Shaman, the largest of the seven, beat a drum to keep his comrades moving relentlessly on towards their quarry. However, when he caught sight of the holy Volgulsky Mountains, he let go of his drum and all seven giants froze to the spot.

9. Dallol, Ethiopia
Dallol is a cinder cone volcano in the Danakil Depression, northeast of the Erta Ale Range in Ethiopia. The term Dallol was named by the Afar people and means dissolution or disintegration, describing a landscape of green acid ponds and iron oxide, sulfur and salt desert plains. The Dallol craters are dangerous places to visit because their surface can be covered by a crust of salt with pools of hot acidic water just inches below. Toxic gases are sometimes released from craters.

10. Rainbow River (Caño Cristales), Columbia, “The River of 5 Colors”
The Liquid Rainbow is caused by a unique phenomenon: a red plant – Macarenia clavigera – growing in the riverbed. Other colours come from black rocks, green algae, blue water and yellow sand, producing an iridescent effect.
