Mystic is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in Groton and Stonington, Connecticut.
Historically, Mystic was a significant Connecticut seaport with more than 600 ships built over 135 years starting in 1784.[2] Mystic Seaport, one of the largest maritime museums in the United States, has preserved a number of sailing ships, such as the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan.[3][4] The village is located on the Mystic River, which flows into Fishers Island Sound and, by extension, Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.[5] The Mystic River Bascule Bridge crosses the river in the center of the village.[6] The name Mystic is derived from the Pequot term missi-tuk describing a large river whose waters are driven into waves by tides or wind.[7] The population was 4,205 at the 2010 census.[8]

Before the 17th century, the Pequot people lived in this portion of southeastern Connecticut.[9] They were in control of a considerable amount of territory, extending toward the Pawcatuck River to the east and the Connecticut River to the west.
To the northwest, the Five Nations of the Iroquois dominated the land linked by the Great Lakes and the Hudson River, allowing trading to occur between the Iroquois and the Dutch. The Pequots were settled just distant enough to be secure from any danger that the Iroquois posed.[10] The Pequot War profoundly affected the Mystic area between 1636 and 1638. In May 1637, captains John Underhill and John Mason led a mission through Narragansett land, along with their allies the Narragansetts and Mohegans, and struck the Pequot Indian settlement in Mystic in the event which came to be known as the Mystic massacre.[11] On September 21, 1638, the colonists signed the Treaty of Hartford, officially ending the Pequot War.[12]

Philip D. Borden (1850-1936) was the son of Philip D. and Sarah F. (Bennett) Borden. He was educated at Williston Seminary at Easthampton, MA, and later graduated with a degree in civil engineering from MIT. He served as assistant civil engineer for the city of Fall River from 1873 to 1880 and then as city engineer for Fall River from 1881 to 1912.

Westerly is a town on the southwestern shoreline of Washington County, Rhode Island, first settled by English colonists in 1661 and incorporated as a municipality in 1669. It is a beachfront community on the south shore of the state with a population of 23,359 as of the 2020 census.
The Pawcatuck River flows on the western border of Westerly and was once renowned for its own species of Westerly salmon, three of which are on the town's official seal. The river flows from 15 mi (24 km) inland, emptying into Little Narragansett Bay. It also serves as the boundary between Westerly and Pawcatuck, Connecticut. Three large salt ponds lie along the coast of Westerly which serve as shallow, reef-like pools whose outer walls form the long, white beaches for which the town is renowned. From west to east, these ponds are Maschaug Pond, Winnapaug Pond, and Quonochontaug Pond.
The Westerly area was known for its granite and stone-cutting industry,[3][4] which quarried a unique stone known as Westerly granite. This pinkish granite is ideal for statuary and has been used in numerous government buildings of several states on the eastern seaboard.[5]
Westerly becomes a popular tourist destination during the summer months when the population nearly doubles.[6] Its well-known beaches include Weekapaug Beach, Westerly Town Beach, Misquamicut State Beach, East Beach, and Watch Hill Beach.

In this 4K video, I walk South on Water Street, which is the main street of the coastal colonial Connecticut town of Stonington. I walk from Wadawanuck Square to the southern tip of Stonington Point.
Stonington is located on the border of Connecticut and Rhode Island, next to the old whaling seaport of Mystic. The drive from Boston is about 2 hours, and from New York, it is about 2.5 hours, making it a perfect weekend trip.
