Exploring, cottaging and taco-ing in the Parry Sound — Muskoka Region

Joins us on this weekend getaway as we explore Ontario’s beautiful cottage country in the Parry Sound – Muskoka region, just 2.5 hours North of Toronto. We watched the waters rise and fall in the Locks of Port Carling, shopped our way through the Rosseau Summer Market, felt on top of the world in Parry Sound, and marvelled at the rebirth of an old building in Mactier. Nelson shows us how to make tacos from the end of a dock at our friend’s cottage in the Township of The Archipelago, and we slow down to enjoy a slice of paradise by the waters of Georgian Bay. Ahhh…this. is. life.

PARRY SOUND | ONTARIO, CANADA (4K) Town Tour

PARRY SOUND | ONTARIO, CANADA (4K) Town Tour: Parry Sound is a town (pop.: 6,879) in Ontario, Canada, located on the eastern shore of the sound after which it is named. Parry Sound is located 160 km (99 mi) south of Sudbury and 225 km (140 mi) north of Toronto. It is a single tier government located in the territorial District of Parry Sound which has no second tier County, Regional or District level of government. Parry Sound is a popular cottage country region for Southern Ontario residents. It also has the world's deepest natural freshwater port.

The Anishinaabeg/Anishinaabek - Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi communities reside in the surrounding District of Parry Sound, which also encompasses the lands of the Wasauksing, Shawanaga, Magnetawan, Dokis, and Henvey Inlet First Nations. The district falls under the Robinson-Huron Treaty.

There was a slight decline in economic activity shortly after World War I with J.R. Booth's construction of a rival town, Depot Harbour on nearby Parry Island, but this setback was overcome through later developments in tourism and commerce, and the accidental destruction by fire of the entire town of Depot Harbour on August 14, 1945.

The body of water that gives the town its name was surveyed and named by Captain (later Admiral) Henry Wolsey Bayfield in the 19th century, in honour of the Arctic explorer Sir William Edward Parry. In 1857, the modern townsite was established near the Ojibwa village of Wasauksing (shining shore) at the mouth of the Seguin River. The post office was established in 1865. Parry Sound was incorporated as a town in 1887. In the late 19th century, rail service was established, making the town an important depot along the rail lines to Western Canada.

In 1916, a cordite factory was established in the nearby town of Nobel for the Imperial Munitions Board. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, an explosives and munitions factory was also built at Nobel, making Parry Sound an important part of both the First World War and the Second World War effort.

Parry Sound is the birthplace of hockey legend Bobby Orr, the namesake of the local community centre and the town's own Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. In Orr's best-selling autobiography, Orr: My Story, he speaks highly of Parry Sound, the friends and family who resided there and the happy childhood he had living in that part of Canada.[12][13][14]

Canadian actor Don Harron's stage character Charlie Farquharson remains one of the town's most cherished personalities. Former Ontario premier Ernie Eves also called the town home for many years; he was the MPP for the Parry Sound—Muskoka riding from 1981 through 2001.

The town is home to several cultural festivals, including the Festival of the Sound classical music festival, an annual dragonboat race and a buskers' festival which takes place as part of the town's Canada Day festivities. The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts serves as the principal performance venue during the Festival of the Sound, and also hosts concerts, live theatre and other cultural events throughout the year.

Trip To Parry Sound

family trip to Parry Sound Ontario

Parry Sound Ontario Canada

Chapter 5 Webisode 4 is all about traveling back into Canada. We crossed the border at Sault Ste. Marie into Ontario and started exploring a Province that we had only ever flown into. We knew it was a beautiful place but had no idea how much we would learn and enjoy it.

We headed North to Sudbury where we did some RV Reviews and met up with some great people we had only known through Youtube. Mitch and Jilles from @mjwheels are another travel couple who had been going on adventures full time and then returned to Ontario to start building a tiny home on a homestead. We shared a great meal with them and it felt like we had known them for years. We love traveling and meeting up with people from different facets of our lives. There are so many great people out there in the RV world.

Even though living an RV Sometimer Lifestyle takes us to great places where we see really cool things we also have to do lots of work sometimes. These youtube videos don't produce themselves, you know. So when we are feeling a little trapped and stir crazy we go out on a date night and we share one of these with you. It's not glamours but we get a few laughs out of it, stretch our legs and get some fresh air.

We also took a boat tour through Parry Sound and the 30,000 Islands, which is the world's largest fresh water archipelago. The Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve is located in Parry Sound and has a @UNESCO designation for its unique plant and animal species that are at risk. The area is beautiful and the boat tour took us through winding narrow passages around the many many islands. To be considered part of the 30,000 islands each land mass must be at least 1 acre in size. This is true cottage country as the shores and islands had amazing and unique cottages that would be a summer vacationer's dream.

After spending a sunny warm day cruising through Parry Sound we needed to get back on the road and find an RV repair place to get our broken slide fixed once and for all. We knew it would be tough because of course we had no appointment. We stopped at Heidi's RV Superstore and they got us in first thing in the morning, they worked super hard and did a great job of getting everything put back together just like there had never been a problem. We highly recommend them.

We filmed this video in Ontario, Canada in late September 2019.

Winter Dome Glamping at Tiny Village Parry Sound Ontario | Glamping with Kids

This glamping paradise is located 2 1/2 hours North of Toronto on the shore of De Bois Lake.

We spent the night here and loved this gorgeous Winter getaway!

The dome was so cozy and we stayed warm inside as we enjoyed the scenic views!

We had lots of fun playing games and making s’mores over our campfire. The kids loved tobogganing, playing on the playground and walking out across the frozen lake.

The dome was well stocked for all of our needs. We brought the panini press shown in the video, the rest was provided.

Things that aren't necessary, but that we're glad we brought:
slippers
heated blankets
sleds to pull our luggage to the dome
easy to cook meals

30000 Islands - onboard Island Queen Cruise, Parry Sound, ONTARIO

On thanksgiving day we went on board the 3hr afternoon Island Queen Cruise out of Parry Sound, the last cruise of the year, to explore Georgian Bay's 30,000 Islands. These islands are the largest concentration of freshwater islands in the world. Get more info at

This three-hour sightseeing cruise gave us an unforgettable experience and breathtaking views of Georgian Bay’s remote wilderness, fall foliage, and the charm of its grand summer cottages. This cruise covered some great landmarks such as Rose Point Swing Bridge, Bear's head (tip of Parry Island) Hole in the wall, Mowat Island, Killbear Provincial Park, and many more. We could not put the camera down the whole time we were on board the cruise. This is definitely a cruise to remember.

The drive to and from was also quite scenic with changing fall colors. We will definitely pay another visit during the summer months.
