???? Breathtaking Villa Palagonia, Sicily
Villa Palagonia is a patrician villa in Bagheria, 15 km from Palermo, in Sicily. The villa itself, built from 1715 by the architect Tommaso Napoli with the help of Agatino Daidone, is one of the earliest examples of Sicilian Baroque. However, its popularity comes mainly from the statues of monsters with human faces that decorate its garden and its wall, and earned it the nickname of The Villa of Monsters (Villa dei Mostri).

The courtyard embraces the of the stunning piece of Sicilian Baroque by a series of grotesques, created from 1749 by Francesco Ferdinando II Gravina, Prince of Palagonia, which aroused the curiosity of travellers during the Grand Tour in the 18th and 19th centuries. For instance Henry Swinburne, Patrick Brydone, John Soane, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Count de Borde, Jean-Pierre Houël and Alexandre Dumas and many others.

Sicily on the road ~ Episode #4 (Cefalù, Tindari, Bagheria)

In this fourth episode of Sicilian vlog on our way from Taormina to Cefalù we will discover a secret place called Piscina di Venere, located right on the North of this island. Once we left this peaceful paradise we headed to Cefalù. This town is mainly famous for its beaches, but we will show you that it’s not the only thing to see there, like Duomo, one of the greatest examples of Byzantine art. In this road, we visited also two small towns, not very famous in touristic guides but we loved them. The first one is Tindari, on top of a hill mainly famous for a Santuario dedicated to Black Madonna, the second one and the last thing you will see in this video is Bagheria. You might know it as “Baarìa”, the old Sicilian name used also in the famous movie of the director Tornatore, that was filmed right in the streets of this town. We had the chance to visit one of the weirdest and most beautiful villa right in Bagheria, called Villa Palagonia, mainly famous for its sculptures of monsters.
