10 Best Places to Visit in Hamburg Germany - Hamburg Travel Guide

Hamburg, a major port city in northern Germany, is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It's crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland. Near its core, Inner Alster lake is dotted with boats and surrounded by cafes. The city's central Jungfernstieg boulevard connects the Neustadt (new town) with the Altstadt (old town), home to landmarks like 18th-century St. Michael’s Church.

Germany is a Western European country with a landscape of forests, rivers, mountain ranges and North Sea beaches. It has over 2 millennia of history. Berlin, its capital, is home to art and nightlife scenes, the Brandenburg Gate and many sites relating to WWII. Munich is known for its Oktoberfest and beer halls, including the 16th-century Hofbräuhaus. Frankfurt, with its skyscrapers, houses the European Central Bank.

Transcript:
Welcome to Hamburg! How much could you really tell me about Hamburg? If you’re like me, then before setting out to this criminally overlooked city, you might have only known it as one of the big German cities that isn’t Berlin. I’m here to tell you that it’s so, so much more than that, and I can’t believe I went so long without visiting. Hamburg is a city on the water, and as Europe’s third-largest port, Hamburg is known as Germany’s ‘Gateway to the World’. The river Elbe is the source - the main artery that brings Hamburg to life. From river tours pacing the canals of the Speicherstadt to the container ships loaded by crane in the Harbour, trade and prosperity brought to Hamburg by the river Elbe shaped the city from its foundations. But not everything great in Hamburg sails down the Elbe. From sky-scraping concert
halls .. to miniature model railways. From Vegas-style red light district nightlife .. to cool, underground gourmet burger restaurants. Hamburg is a modern, global city with a rich history and culture, with something to fascinate everyone. We’re Jake and Tom, from Holiday Extras, and this is our Hamburg Adventure. On our first day, we’re going to see the sights the way Hamburg sells them. The full-blown Tourist experience, visiting Hamburg’s most highly recommended tourist experiences, to let you know if they make the cut. On Day 2? We loosen up a little. Find our own way. Indulge our flights of fancy, and do Hamburg the way we wanted. Indulge ourselves! We wanted to find out what Hamburg had to offer that was perfect for Jake and Tom. The two days of our trip turned out to be so different - and I hope you find what we learned useful. We learned a lot! But what surprised me the most about this trip was how fun it can be to just chase my curiosity - and break my own expectations. Our adventure started at Gatwick Airport - filling up on free breakfast in the lounge to prepare for the journey ahead. From the airport it was easy - we booked a transfer in advance - and before long we were at our accommodation, resting up before our Hamburg trip truly began. We kicked off Day One the way any good day starts - with a coffee. There are plenty of places along the river to grab a pretty great coffee, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try my first ever big pretzel. (WHICH was great, by the way.) Charged with coffee and pretzels, we were ready to go - now it was time to get stuck in to Hamburg’s most highly recommended things to do. Hamburg is a city on the water. In central Hamburg, the river Elbe divides off into smaller, narrower canals that interlace a beautiful district called the Speicherstadt, which means ‘City of Warehouses’. The Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world- Ignore me - it’s actually the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations. Fun fact - this case, they’re made of Oak! Which makes it a big tourist attraction, and it consistently comes up as one of the most recommended places to visit in Hamburg. Now having been here ourselves? Totally agree with that. It’s beautiful, you have lovely views of the river, it’s really nice to walk around, lots of places to grab a coffee and just… just waste some time, y’know? There’s lots of other attractions that are based here as well because it’s so popular with tourists, so it’s definitely somewhere you should have on your list. Some of the most picturesque places in the city are around the Speicherstadt, and most city and harbour tours will go through here. The iconic warehouse facades are one of the most recognisable sites in Hamburg. Although we could have easily wandered back and forth over the canal bridges all morning, sipping coffee and admiring the architecture, it was time to move on. And we had a little place in mind. So this next place calls itself one of the epicentres of hamburg tourism.

Bremen, Germany: Exploring The Beautiful Hanseatic City [Travel Guide]

Have you heard of Bremen? Maybe the fairy tale of the donkey, dog cat, and rooster trying to be musicians rings a bell? In any case, Bremen is a gorgeous, historic city on the Weser River - that you have to check out!

Just a quick trip from Hamburg, Bremen is known for its historic sights: the Marktplatz, the famous Rathaus (Town Hall), Bremen Dom (Cathedral), and Böttcherstraße. We absolutely loved wandering around. There's a cool historic village area - known as Schnoorviertel - with tiny houses and alleyways in all directions. We walked the river, checked out a few museums, and even had a coffee (and cake) in the main square just taking in the city life!

Here's a travel video of the Old Town, churches, museums, the river walk, parks, and other things to do and see!

Of course, here are our articles with lots of tips for travelling to Bremen. We'll add more as we publish them:

10 tips for Hamburg

With just under two million inhabitants, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city. Unlike Berliners, however, most Hamburgers would probably not claim to live in a cosmopolitan city. With Hanseatic understatement, they are content to be northern Germany's No. 1 and, after all, the gateway to the world. #Hamburg #Tips #Travel

WHAT TO DO IN HAMBURG in 60 seconds

You want to know what Hamburg is all about? Just give us a minute! We spent three days in Germanys vibrant harbour city and even met a local legend. Here are our highlights. In 60 seconds.

///// 60seconds.travel. We travel the world. In 60 seconds./////

Check out our website: and follow us on Facebook

Here are our recommendations in order of appearance:

00:08 The Old Elbe Tunnel
Once a technical sensation, the tunnel from 1911 connects the Landungsbrücken with Steinwerder.

00:10 Alster Stand Up Paddling
The Alster is a tributary of the Elbe and passes through beautiful surroundings. Stand Up Paddling and Yoga is very popular. We recommend the Supper Club.

00:13 The weather
The weather of Hamburg has a very bad reputation. But actually it rains less than you might think.

00:15 Miniatur Wunderland (Kehrwieder 2-4)
It's the world's largest model railway. It’s amazing and somehow very German (in the best sense).

00:17 Harbour Tour
No visit to Hamburg is complete without a harbour cruise to see the impressive loading docks from up close. We went with

00:20 Speicherstadt
The Old Warehouse District is the largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings stand on oak logs.

00:22 Kaffeemuseum Burg (St. Annenufer 2)
This museum about the history and making of coffee offers interesting tours that include a yummy coffee tasting.

00:24 Chocoversum (Meßberg 2)
If you are more into chocolate – than this is your place to be! Check out the delicious tours here:

00:26 Fish Market Altona (Große Elbstraße 9)
This must be the place where the word „market crier“ has been invented. A really fun place to start the day. Every sunday from 6AM-9:30AM.

00:30 Sightseeing Tour
The best way to get an overview of the city is to hop on one of the red double-deckers.

00:32 Dockland
This futuristic office building might not be the prettiest but it certainly offers a stunning view over the harbour from its top.

00:34 St. Michael’s Church
The „Michel“, as the locals call the tower of their beloved church, is one of the best viewpoints above the city. It’s 5 Euros to get up there.

00:36 Clouds Heaven’s Bar (Reeperbahn 1)
Right on top of the stunning Dancing Towers, this fancy rooftop bar offers great drinks and an exklusive view over the city.

00:38 Planten un Blomen Park
Its name is Low German and means „plants and flowers“. Pretty accurate. And a really pretty park.

00:49 Elbchaussee, Strandperle

Elbstrand Övelgönne | Hamburg Beach With Kids – Kiaan's Germany Travel Vlog

Hello Everyone, Welcome to Kiaan’s World.

Kiaan is exploring Elbstrand Övelgönne, one of the most beautiful and kids friendly beaches in Hamburg, Germany.

Sandy beach in the middle of the city, with a view of the loading and unloading of large ships. Unbelievable, if you don't experience it yourself. The residential areas above are also beautiful. The beaches are a must, not only in summertime. At the beginning, there are few good restaurants and cafes, where you can eat out, drink coffee, beer and ice creams in summer.

A beach day in the big city
It doesn't always have to be a trip to the North Sea or the Baltic Sea: if you're longing for sand under your feet and a cool breeze, you're in good hands on Hamburg's Elbe beach. Along the banks of the Elbe you will also find an old Swede, beautifully designed parks and strolls from Blankenese to the last natural beach in Hamburg.

Sandy beach in Hamburg
A special feature of Hamburg is that, despite being a big city, you have the beach right on your doorstep. The Elbe beach stretches for around 13 kilometers downstream towards the mouth of the Elbe with a view of the harbour. In many sections you can relax in the sand and let the large container ships pass by. And it's not just the people of Hamburg who love their Elbe beach, the contrast between relaxation and industry is also inspiring internationally: The newspaper New York Times named the Elbe beach one of the ten favorite places in Europe by the water in 2017. The beach sections can be reached by public transport such as the harbor ferries ( HVV information ) and on foot or by bike along the Elbwanderweg .

In general, the Elbe is not a designated bathing water . The strong currents are treacherous in many sections and are intensified by shipping traffic. Therefore, you should leave it at sunbathing. - ttps://www-hamburg-de.translate.goog/sehenswuerdigkeiten-am-wasser/9763364/elbstrand-hamburg/?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp
