Top 10 walks in South East England | Box Hill Circular walk | North Downs | ???????? Hiking UK | England

Although they share the same station, this short but strenuous North Downs walk takes in a different area from the Westhumble Circular walk (2–14b). It traverses a series of hills in a clockwise loop north and east of Box Hill & Westhumble station: Norbury Park, Mickleham Downs, Headley Heath and finally Box Hill itself. There are many fine viewpoints and in several places you can see your earlier route from a new perspective. The area is deservedly popular and the famous sites are likely to be crowded on fine weekends, but there are quieter places in between.

Norbury Park Nature Reserve is described by Surrey Wildlife Trust as a ‘working landscape’ which includes a sawmill and three farms. The prominent house at its centre (in private ownership) was built in 1774 and has had several famous owners and tenants, including Leopold Salomons (who donated Box Hill to the National Trust) and Dr Marie Stopes, the family planning pioneer.

Box Hill (named for its abundant box trees) and Headley Heath are both owned by the National Trust, which has introduced special breeds of sheep and cattle to restore more of the downland to its original ‘unimproved’ condition. This unfertilized land is rich in wildflowers and supports many butterflies: 40 of the 58 British species have been found on Box Hill.

Length
Main Walk: 16¼ km (10.1 miles). Four hours 40 minutes walking time. For the whole excursion including trains, sights and meals, allow at least 9 hours.

This walk is covered by our Club's insurance. Our Club is registered on The British Mountaineering Council (BMC)

Yoga and Hike Otford Circular via Romney Street walk | ???????? Hiking UK | England | 4K

A short walk packed with variety and fine views, bluebell woods in season, a pretty village and a short train journey

Length
12.0km (7.5 miles), 3 hours 30 minutes. For the whole outing, including trains, sights and meals, allow 7 hours 30 minutes.

Toughness
6 out of 10.

Being short in length, this walk makes a good, brisk, autumn or winter walk, with several ups and downs, although the walk is also delightful in bluebell season as the route passes through lots of bluebell woods during the morning. The route at the outset is steeply uphill, for a time following the North Downs Way, with views back over Otford and the valley, then going through Greenhill Wood, with a glimpse of Oak Hall, before heading north to Romney Street. You then have a steep descent to cross a former golf course for a short, steep ascent before dropping down to Shoreham village, for a late lunch at one of its four pubs or two tea rooms or vineyard.

This walk is covered by our Club's insurance. Our Club is registered on The British Mountaineering Council (BMC)

Eynsford Circular walk | Hiking UK | 4K | North Downs | My Favourites | ???????? Hiking UK | England

A contrast between hidden valleys in the North Downs and the Darent Valley Path through three interesting villages.

Some of this walk will be familiar from the two Book 1 walks which start in Otford, but most of it covers new ground. It starts along a country lane through the secluded Austin Lodge valley, climbing to the isolated settlement of Romney Street. It continues on an undulating section to a ridge with fine views of the Darent valley, from where you descend into Otford, passing its scale model of the Solar System. The village has many interesting old buildings and the full route takes you past the ruins of Otford Palace, a rival to Hampton Court in Tudor times.

NORTH DOWNS WAY: Day 4 - Oxted to Otford

The walk on the North Downs Way from Oxted to Otford was not my favorite 12 miles of the trail because of the farmland walking, but it still held some gorgeous hidden gems. The joy of hiking such a wooded trail in October is that I was surrounded by the gorgeous colors of autumn almost the whole way, and the golden colors almost made up for the lack of golden sun.

The Oxted to Otford section has the most awkward end to beginning public transport links and to save money I went via Tonbridge vs going into London and back out again.

A Walk Around EYNSFORD VILLAGE | Kent

After my visit to Eynsford Castle, I take the opportunity for a quick stroll around the Village itself. There are many old Buildings including the 16th Century ‘Plough Inn’ and the Church is dedicated to St Martin. In about 1163, Thomas Becket is reputed to have excommunicated William de Eynsford, the owner of Eynsford Castle but this was overturned by King Henry II.

Canterbury In Winter, Kent, UK Travel Video

January walk in Canterbury.

WALKING IN KENT | RIVER DARENT | HORTON KIRBY | SUMMER WALK

This was the first summer walk from my Year Round Walks In Kent guidebook (having completed the Winter and Spring walks already). I was joined by Candice for this 2.5 mile circular walk in Horton Kirby near Dartford along a section of the River Darent and the Darent Valley Path (which I would now love to walk all of). We chose this very short walk for this day as it was absolutely boiling hot due to the current UK heatwave and the shady sections of the river would provide an ideal place to keep cool and the milage short enough so we weren't out in the heat for too long.
