Discover Wisconsin is heading to downtown La Crosse, Eau Claire, Oshkosh, and Green Bay to find out what each of these amazing cities has to offer. If you haven’t been downtown in a while, it’s time to go again!
When you think about Oshkosh, a few things probably come to mind… EAA, Public Enemies, Oshkosh B’gosh, but a lot has been happening downtown over the last 10 years. Marie boats up to a beer garden to chat with local resident Bill about what he loves most about living in a city right on the waterfront. A perfect weekend getaway, with watering holes, restaurants, biking trails, beautiful parks, not to mention one of the best farmer’s markets in the state.
Over at Wagner Market, you can find all sorts of specialty meats and high-quality products, including over 100 types of brats and a curated selection of over 700 types of beer, talk about a meat and beer lover’s dream! Want it fresh? Wagner’s even grows their own lettuce and herbs right underneath the store.
Marie joins Jessie from the Business Improvement District to sip some drinks and play a round of bowling at The Howard ( They chat about the local small business scene and the integration with college life and all the vibrant activity. Truly a small town with a big city feel.

Bordered by Lakes Michigan and Superior, Wisconsin offers diverse landscapes and attractions that are a delight to explore. To the north and west are large expanses of hills that are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and areas of lowlands to the south and east have proven excellent for dairy farming. In summer, the beaches are some of the most popular places to visit.
While many of Wisconsin's top things to do are in its two largest cities, Madison and Milwaukee, smaller communities such as Spring Green, home to architect Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Taliesin, are also worth exploring. The state also offers many exceptional cultural activities and events, too, from the huge Oshkosh Airshow to Milwaukee's popular Summerfest.
Outdoor enthusiasts can choose from great fishing lakes and lakes to enjoy boating and leisure activities, as well as some of the best hiking and biking trails to be found anywhere in the country.

Oshkosh was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant claw (cf. Ojibwe oshkanzh, the claw). Although the fur trade attracted the first European settlers to the area as early as 1818, it never became a major player in the fur trade. The 1820s mining boom in southwest Wisconsin along with the opening of the Erie Canal shifted commercial activity away from the Fox River Valley and Green Bay. Soon after 1830, much of the trade moved west, as there had been over-trapping in the region. Following the publicity caused by the Black Hawk War in 1832, there was increased interest in settling Wisconsin by whites from the East Coast, especially New York, Indiana, and Virginia, and by 1836 the cities of Milwaukee, Madison, Janesville, Beloit, and Fond du Lac were founded, with Madison the capital of a new territorial government, setting the stage for the economic and political importance of the southern part of the state. However, Oshkosh would continue to be one of Wisconsin's top five largest cities into the twentieth century.
The establishment and growth of the wood industry in the area spurred development of Oshkosh. Already designated as the county seat, Oshkosh was incorporated as a city in 1853. On April 28, 1875, Oshkosh had a Great Fire that consumed homes and businesses along Main Street north of the Fox River. The fire engulfed 70 stores, 40 factories, and 500 homes, costing nearly $2.5 million (or $51.2 million in 2010 money) in damage.
Around 1900 Oshkosh was home of the Oshkosh Brewing Company, which coined the marketing slogan By Gosh It's Good. Its Chief Oshkosh brand became a nationally distributed beer.
