The best places to visit on the Orkney Islands – Scotland (United Kingdom)

From several places in Scotland, the ferry leaves for Orkney. If you are lucky, you’ll pass the Old Man of Hoy (the male version of Heligoland’s Lange Anna ;)). Mainland, the main island of Orkney, offers unique and interesting tourist attractions. During my time there, I visited many old sights, including the Prehistoric Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones of Stenness and Skara Brae. Also, the Italian Chapel and Churchill Barriers from the Second World War period, may not be missed when you discover this breathtaking island.

This time around, I boarded a train towards Inverness, the capital city of the Highlands. Inverness is actually one of seven cities in Scotland and is Scotland's most northern city.
I then continued my train for 360 miles from Inverness to the northernmost train station in the UK, Thurso. This scenic Far North Line journey took me along the northeast coast of Scotland, along towns and villages, lochs and castles.
I then took another ferry crossing the Pentland Firth, a strait lying between mainland Scotland and the Orkney archipelago, which has some of the fastest tides in the world. The ferry was heading towards Stromness, where the coast of Norway is closer than London.

ABOUT ME:
I started solo travelling in 2013 and left Indonesia in 2016 to pursue full-time travelling while at the same time documenting my journey as I explore different cultures as a solo female traveller.

Having initially travelled for 5 months throughout Asia, I moved to China in January 2017 for an English teaching job, which was my first experience living abroad.

Since leaving China in 2018, I have taken the move to become a full-time YouTube creator and traveller. I strive to create unique, culture-driven content and capture authentic interactions as I travel.

Orkney - islands

People don't always realise that Orkney is made up of a number of islands and outwith the mainland isle, the many other populated isles enjoy an even gentler pace of life and have much to offer whether you just go for a visit or you decide to stay. Find out more here.

This is Kirkwall, Orkney (Mini Travel Guide) featuring Judith and Jane Glue #visitorkney

With a landmark 12th century Viking cathedral and an internationally renowned whiskey distillery (Highland Park), Kirkwall punches well above its weight. This small town is the centre of life in the windswept Orkney Islands. Known in Old Norse as Kirkjuvagr, Kirkwall began life as a small village with a sheltered harbour before rapidly expanding in the 12th century to become an important North Atlantic Viking stronghold. These days it's the perfect base from which to explore the landscapes and neolithic sites of Orkney, boasting a range of hotels, and independent shops and eateries. This film will give you a taste of Kirkwall and features an interview with Judith Glue (whose knitwear store has faced the cathedral for over 40 years) and popular local artist Jane Glue (whose art is available through

Tom Knight, John Dunn and JSM told us to go to Orkney, so we did! Viewers' Choice Episode One :)

We had a few days off together and put out the question on the YouTube Community page for ideas of where to go and boy did some incredible suggestions come back! I get the feeling we'll be working through that list forever, but here is episode one :) Many thanks to Tom, John and JSM for the inspiration.

Alicja has never been to Orkney before and I've only been there briefly. We made our choice at the last minute and to be honest more than anything we were following the weather - typically for when you put in for time off work the dark clouds appear, but we did alright!

Please bear in mind, this video was filmed during our holiday, so we weren't really focussed too much on a narrative, so it's more just clips of our time there, but of course I hope you still enjoy what I've been able to pull together in the edit. If nothing else it'll give you an impression of this wonderful group of islands off the northern tip of the mainland.

We travelled by ferry via Northlink's Scrabster - Stromness route. This was the cheapest option for going with the van (which is also our accommodation), but did involve a longggg drive to get to the top of the mainland first! There is a ferry from Aberdeen too, but we couldn't afford it. This ferry journey was around £200 return including van, so that was our only big expense to make the trip.

Music features a little more on this video that I would like, but unfortunately that was down to the fierce wind blowing almost constantly over the islands!

Enjoy the video.
