THIS is Oklahoma?! Growing up we never knew that Oklahoma has mountains and SURPRISE, there are not only mountains, but lots of other beautiful scenery! We spent a few days road tripping across the southern part of the state, checking out some of its best nature spots, including the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Turner Falls, the Talimena National Scenic Byway, and Beaver Bend State Park. It was a blast and completely blew us away!

During the return trip from my US-75 recording, there was just enough light left to swing over and get this short loop road, the first in my limited I Was In the Neighborhood... series taken while on vacation in a rental car, getting roads I wouldn't trust to my regular vehicle.
Basically if you surrounded Okmulgee with an analog clock, we would be traveling along the edge of it, from 3:00 to 12:00

Floods hit the state of Oklahoma in the USA on May 5th 2022.
Storms caused heavy rains in Okmulgee, Henryetta and Dewar, leading to flash flooding.
Residents were evacuated as homes and businesses were flooded, with possessions and produce destroyed.
Roads were left underwater, with cars left stranded as travel became impossible. Electricity outages were reported as power supplies were affected.
Emergency services worked to rescue trapped citizens and their pets, with affected residents advised to go to the highest point of their homes

A New National Park In Georgia? | Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park | Best Georgia Hikes
Did you know that there is a proposal for a new national park and Preserve in Georgia? The Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park in Macon, GA could be a part of this new national park if it is approved. We visited the Ocmulgee Mounds recently. This area has some amazing history. Before our visit, we researched these Indian mounds. We stumbled upon a History Channel show called Unearthed that has some interesting information about the hypothesized link between the Native Americans that lived here and constructed these mounds many years ago, the Creek, and the ancient Mayan civilization. It was very intriguing. We learned more about this area with our visit. We think this opportunity for a national park would be a great opportunity to preserve some rich history and natural habitats. This area is definitely one of the more unique places in Georgia to visit. We enjoyed our hike at the Ocmulgee Mounds and learning more about the history of the area we've been just up the road from for so many years.

The Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge near Okmulgee is a wonderful way to reconnect with nature, to get out and enjoy our state’s natural beauty; enjoy a quiet, peaceful and restful stay at The Bluebird Inn located in downtown Elk City; visit Tidewater Winery in Drumright where you can sample several different varieties from sweet to dry and learn a little bit about Drumright history; at the Larry K. Hill Studios in Woodward, you can see his studio filled with vibrant scenes familiar to locals as well his passion for art; Nosh Restaurant and Event Center in Moore has a little bit of everything from lots of sandwiches to pot roast to a very popular deep-friend grilled cheese sandwich called a Frenchie & find some great “home cookin” at Buddy’s Grill in Claremore!

Okmulgee State Park
This state park has many structures built as WPA projects back during the great depression of the 1930s. All the structures still stand rock-solid after many years of use. The spillway is one of those projects that most park visitors find especially fascinating.

Okmulgee was founded in 1868, when the Creek Nation began restoring order after the Civil War. In 1869, a post office (originally spelled Okmulkee) was established, with Captain Frederick B. Severs as the first postmaster. The name of the post office was officially changed to the present spelling on November 15, 1883. The Creeks initially built a two-story log council house to serve as their capital. This building burned in 1878 and was replaced with a stone building that stands today. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and now serves as a local history museum.
The St. Louis, Oklahoma and Southern Railway (later absorbed by the Frisco railroad) arrived in 1900 and triggered a building boom. By the time of statehood in 1907, the town had 2,322 residents and had been named the seat of Okmulgee County. The present county court house was built in 1916. The discovery of oil nearby in 1907 further expanded Okmulgee, and brought several new industries to town. These included three glass factories, a bottle factory, foundry and machine shops. The population was 4,176 in the 1910 census.
In November 1992, the Okmulgee Downtown Historic District (NRIS number 92001693) was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The area is roughly bounded by Fourth Street, Eighth Street, Okmulgee Avenue and Frisco Avenue.

Take a virtual musical hike on a boardwalk trail!
Cussetah Bottoms Boardwalk Trail, located near Okmulgee, Oklahoma, is in the Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge. Designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2007, the Boardwalk loops through the bottomland hardwood forest surrounding the Deep Fork River, and has two viewing areas of the wetlands. The Boardwalk also provides access to several miles of unimproved forest trails.
