A suburban area of Tokyo rich in nature and with many tourist sites

Area Characteristics

Saitama is an inland prefecture with more than 7 million people. With an area of 3,797km2(1,466mile2), it is bigger than the 179th-biggest nation of Samoa(2,842km2=1,097mile2). Access to the southern part of the prefecture which includes Omiya and Urawa is excellent as a bedroom community of Tokyo while the northern area which includes the city of Chichibu has plenty of nature.

Major Sites

Saitama Prefecture has Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park among many other sightseeing sites to enjoy nature including the downstream area of Nagatoro Gorge. Along with the landmarks of Saitama New Urban Center and Saitama Super Arena, there is a great variety of spots to see such as The Railway Museum, Bonsai Village and Kawagoe which has been dubbed “Little Edo”.

Food

Soka senbei (rice crackers), Kawagoe potato cakes and Kumagaya gokabo sweets are the 3 famous confections of Saitama. Furthermore, the prefecture is also famous as a treasure house for its comfort food including Kitamoto tomato curry which won a national curry contest, Hatogaya yakiudon (fried udon noodles) which has been recognized as one of the Top 5 yakiudon in Japan, and a form of karaage (deep-fried chicken) whose breading is made from Soka senbei. As well, there is Sayama tea which is among the Top 3 teas in the country and Coedo beer from Kawagoe which has even won acclaim abroad.

Transportation

There are 15 railways operated by JR and private corporations going from Tokyo into Saitama, so these are recommended over buses and cars. It’s customary to take the train from Tokyo Station for Omiya via Ueno or go through Ikebukuro to reach Kawagoe and Chichibu. Although Saitama has plenty of north-south lines, it has a dearth of east-west lines so if you are considering touring through the prefectural sightseeing spots, renting a car is convenient.

JAPAN: This place is REAL: ASHIKAGA AMAZING TEMPLES & More (Japan Travel Vlog Guide)

Japan Travel Guide: Ashikaga, Tochigi has more temples than Kamakura! And I visited some that should not be missed!

00:55 Gyodosan Joinji Temple

The temple is called the ‘Koyasan of Kanto’ and is built in the mountains surrounded by steep cliffs. It is said to have been founded by Gyoki Shonin in 714 and flourished as a place of mountain temple worship. The view from the Seishin-tei tea house on top of the cliff walls has been depicted in Hokusai’s ‘Hanging-cloud Bridge’. Designated as the prefecture’s first scenic spot in 1975.

Approximately 10 minutes from Ashikaga Interchange on the Kita Kanto Expressway
Approximately 30 minutes from Ota Kiryu Interchange on the Kita Kanto Expressway
Approximately 40 minutes from Sano Fujioka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway
Approximately a 40 walk from ‘Gyodosan’ stop on the Ashikaga city bus Gyodo bus route.

04:25 Chorin-ji Temple

This friendly temple has a coffee shop that operates twice a week at no set schedule between 10-12am.

It is famous for its autumn leaves. Momijigari is the Japanese tradition of visiting areas where leaves have turned red in the autumn. The word comes from the two Japanese words momiji (紅葉) meaning red leaves or maple tree and kari (狩り), hunting. It is also called kōy

07:08 Komyoji Temple

Komyoji Temple has a long history. Beautiful with its landscaped garden. This temple is very active and offers many activities.

About 1km northwest from Ashikaga IC (about 5 minutes)
Train: Approximately 5 km north of Ashikagashi Station on the Tobu Isesaki Line (20 minutes by taxi)
About 4km north from JR Ryomo Line Ashikaga Station (15 minutes by taxi)

09:50. Saishoji Temple

This temple was founded by Gyoki and built by Emperor Shomu. The current Chief Priest is the 94th in the line.

In the 8th century, this area was close to the northern border of Japan, and the Tohoku region was settled by the Emishi, a people who did not belong to the central government in Nara or Kyoto.

Therefore, Bishamonten, the god of war who protected the north, was enshrined here.
Later, this temple became a sacred place where warlords prayed for victory in battle, many monks have been praying for the peace and security of the nation, and people make prayers.

360° Azuma, Kitamono from Okegawa Station (桶川駅から北本市東間) - Japan Old Roads Tour (April, 2023)

The Nakasendō (中山道, Central Mountain Route), also called the Kisokaidō (木曾街道), was one of the five routes of the Edo period, and one of the two that connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. There were 69 stations (staging-posts) between Edo and Kyoto, crossing through Musashi, Kōzuke, Shinano, Mino and Ōmi provinces. In addition to Tokyo and Kyoto, the Nakasendō runs through the modern-day prefectures of Saitama, Gunma, Nagano, Gifu and Shiga, with a total distance of about 534 km (332 mi).
Unlike the coastal Tōkaidō, the Nakasendō traveled inland, hence its name, which can be translated as 中 = central; 山 = mountain; 道 = route (as opposed to the Tōkaidō, which roughly meant eastern sea route). Because it was such a well-developed road, many famous persons, including the haiku master Matsuo Bashō, traveled the road. In the late 1830s Hiroshige also walked the Nakasendo, contributing 46 designs to a series of 69 views of the Nakasendo, which was later completed by Keisai Eisen.
Many people preferred traveling along the Nakasendō because it did not require travelers to ford any rivers.
In Gunma Prefecture, the Nakasendō is featured on the 'na' card in Jomo Karuta.

Shukuba (宿場) were post stations during the Edo period in Japan, generally located on one of the Edo Five Routes or one of its sub-routes. They were also called shuku-eki (宿駅). These post stations (or post towns) were places where travelers could rest on their journey around the nation. They were created based on policies for the transportation of goods by horseback that were developed during the Nara and Heian periods.
