Nagano Travel Guide
A travel guide for visiting Nagano Japan. Highlights include: Getting to Nagano from Tokyo, Nagano Station, Zenkoji Temple, Cherry Blossoms, and the Snow Monkey Park. Nagano, now connected by a new Shinkansen line, is only a 90 minute trip from Tokyo Station. Although most people only know of Nagano as a former home to the winter Olympics, it is a great day trip from Tokyo, or over-night stay to visit the Nagano Snow Monkey Park.
While you are in Nagano, make sure to their some of their food specialties: Soba Noodles, Apples, and Miso Ice Cream. The third floor of JR Nagano Station has a great selection of local eateries.

With a short trip to Japan this early spring, I decided to spend a few days in Tokyo and take an overnight trip to Kamakura (something I’ve been planning on doing some time now). So in this vlog (as with my other Tokyo vlogs, I will be eating my way through these two cities (making this more of a food vlog), so here's an updated list of Tokyo eats, street food, cafes and bars, as well as temples to visit in Kamakura and places to view the cherry blossoms around this time of year.

Kanazawa: The Perfect City to See Japan's Nature, Food, History, and more (Shirakawago side trip)
This is part 7 and the final video of our Japan Travel Series - 16 Days in Japan - during the sakura season, March-April 2023.
In this video:
Day 15: Depart from Kyoto and Arrive to Kanazawa. Check in at Machiya house, explore the traditional neighborhoods, dine at Katamachi and Sushi Ippei.
Day 16: Day trip from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go, village with traditional farm houses. Visit Kenroku-en Garden and Kanazawa castle
Departure day: Shinkansen to Tokyo for a brief stop at Akihabara and Ueno Park, then fly home.

Day 11- Visit Universal Studios Japan. Spend a fun day at Super Nintendo Mario World, eat at Kinopio's Cafe, and end the day visiting the Harry Potter Land.
Day 12 - Visit the Mount Yoshino in Nara Prefecture to get an amazing view of Sakura trees.
Day 13 - Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kamo River, Ogawa Coffee Kyoto.
Day 14 -Visit Nagoya, Nagoya Castle, the newest Ghibli Park, & eat Grilled eel in Nagoya station.

The most beautiful waterfalls of Kyushu Japan
Ryumon falls in Kagoshima.
At 46-meters high and 43m wide, Ryumon Falls, located in the upper stream of the Amikake River is very impressive. From the car park, it is a 200m walk to the waterfall basin, where you can feel the cool spray and thunderous sounds up close.
Harajiri falls in Oita prefecture.
This waterfall on the Ogata Plain in southern Oita is nicknamed the Niagara Falls of Japan for its distinctive horseshoe shape, though these falls are much smaller. Formed by the great eruption of Mt. Aso 90,000 years ago, the falls are around 20 meters high and 120 meters wide. The surrounding flatlands make the falls more impressive, as they seem to appear out of nowhere.
Ogawa falls in Kagoshima prefecture.
Ogawa Falls is one of the most scenic spots in Kagoshima. The waterfall is majestic, at 46 meters high and 60 meters wide. Water runs down a gigantic granite rock, where the rocky surface offers visitors a stunningly unique view. You will have to walk on a 1.2km walking trail to reach the waterfall, but it is highly recommended that if you are able to walk that distance you do.
Nabegataki falls in Kumamoto.
Only recently discovered as a tourist location, the fall itself is a wide sheet of water; though not particularly high at 10 meters it makes up for it with a width of around 20 m across. The area behind the waterfall is surprisingly spacious, the beautiful views through the cascade making it an ideal spot for keen photographers. The combination of the falls, the water spray glistening in the air, the tall sugi trees, moss covered rocks and the sunlight filtering through the trees make this a very special place earning it’s reputation as a Japanese ‘power spot’.
Yatogi falls in Miyazaki prefecture.
Unlike many of the other waterfalls in Kyushu, Yatogi requires a little bit of a hike through a forest trail, so bring your boots. But at the end of the hike is one of the largest waterfalls on our list, standing a whopping 73m tall Yatogi is a powerful waterfall.
Sekino falls Miyazaki prefecture
Located within the Mochio Sekino-o Prefectural Park of Miyakonojo, Sekino-o Falls is considered one of the best in the Kirishima Mountain Range and designated as one of the Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan. Three waterfalls, the largest reaching 40m wide and 18m high, from water spilling through the cracks of potholes in the Shounai riverbed.
Manai falls Miyazaki prefecture
Located Inside Takachiho gorge, you’ll discover Manai Falls, designated as one of Japan’s 100 Most Beautiful Waterfalls. The powerful 17-meter wall of water gushing down will leave you speechless!
Soji falls of Kagoshima prefecture.
Often referred to as the Niagara of the East, Sogi Falls certainly lives up to its name. At 210m wide and 12m tall, the waterfall is a stunning sight and the noise as it thunders over Senjoiwa rock is incredible.
Maruo falls Kagoshima prefecture
Located along National Route 223 visible directly from your car, is a large waterfall with a height of 23m and a width of 16m. The waterfall is infused with natural hotspring water, which will often make it steam in the heart of winter. The rocks that form the base of the waterfall are uniquely slanted making Maruo falls a very striking waterfall to view.
Next is Sakuradake falls in Oita prefecture.
The waterfall gets its name for the water falling on an overhanging rock that creates a splash that looks like cherry blossoms fluttering. This beautiful waterfall stands 16m tall and is easily viewable from the walking path below. It is believed that Sakuradake falls was a major inspiration for writers during Japan’s Edo period.
Mamako falls MIyazaki prefecture
The Mamako Wateralls are well-reputed for their beauty all around Kyushu. Located in the Suki area, upstream the Honjo River, a majestic waterfall is waiting for you. It is a splendid scenery rich in vegetation which was designated as a prefectural scenic spot in 1958. The waterfall is impressive with a drop of 20 meters and a depth of 22.
Senpiro falls Yakushima island
Senpiro Falls is about 60 meters high and one of the highest waterfalls on Yakushima Island. The V-shaped valley at the foot of Mt. Mocchomu was formed by the Tainoko River, which over time has cut down through the granite bedrock. The waterfall was named Senpiro Falls as the bedrock on the left side of the falls looks as large as a thousand people holding hands.
Ryujin falls Yakushima island
This 30m high waterfall is barely visible from the road, however nestled in the forest and void of many man made developments, Ryujin falls is one of the more beautiful and often over looked waterfalls on Yakushima island.
Lastly we come to Ohki falls on Yakushima.
This spectacular waterfall is the tallest on our list standing 88m high. Ohki falls is one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan and is the biggest waterfall on Yakushima Island.
