We're exploring the East Coast of New Zealand' South Island in this vlog. Starting in Oamaru we check out the Riverstone Castle and try hunt out the famous Blue Penguin Colony of Oamaru... with zero success.
Further down the coast we found the Moeraki Boulders — 50+ spherical boulders on the beach and 60 million years in the making!
Finally, the worlds steepest street — Baldwin Street in Dunedin. Featuring a walk down to Tunnel Beach as well, something we didn't expect was just how beautiful the beaches in Dunedin really are!

From the Victorian Quarter to the Steampunk Museum, Seals to Penguins. This unassuming town has a few tricks up its sleeve, and is well worth a stop over!

When night falls in Oamaru, the little blue penguins in New Zealand return to shore and their nesting sites .They return in groups known as rafts for safety in numbers. If you go to the shore of Oamaru at dusk, then you have a good chance of spotting the little blue penguins in Oamaru. The place to see the most penguins is the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony.
The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is a special penguin-watching facility around an artificial nesting site where nesting boxes have been built and are usually occupied with around 130 breeding pairs of little blue penguins.
If you want to see penguins in New Zealand, then Oamaru is a fantastic place to add to your New Zealand travel itinerary.

Oamaru, New Zealand | 4K Walking Tour
Oamaru (Māori: Te Oha-a-Maru) is the largest town in North Otago, in the South Island of New Zealand. With a population of 13,850 Oamaru is the 28th largest urban area in New Zealand, and the third largest in Otago. The town is the seat of Waitaki District.
Oamaru has been built between the rolling hills of limestone and short stretch of flat land to the sea. This limestone rock is used for the construction of local Oamaru stone”, sometimes called Whitestone buildings.
Many public buildings use as their construction material the local limestone and known as Oamaru stone. The Victorian precinct in southern part of Oamaru's main commercial district ranks as one of New Zealand's most impressive streetscapes due to the many prominent 19th century buildings constructed from this material.
Oamaru enjoys a protected location in the shelter of Cape Wanbrow. The town was laid out in 1858 by Otago's provincial surveyor John Turnbull Thomson, who named the early streets after British rivers, particularly rivers in the northwest and southeast of the country.
The name Oamaru derives from the Māori and can be translated as the place of Maru. The identity of Maru remains open to conjecture.
