Places to see in ( Oakham - UK )

Oakham is the county town of Rutland in the East Midlands of England, 25 miles east of Leicester, 28 miles south-east of Nottingham and 23 miles west of Peterborough. Oakham lies to the west of Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. It is in the Vale of Catmose and is built on an incline, varying from 325 ft (99 m) to 400 ft (120 m) above sea level.

Local governance for Oakham is provided for by the single-tier unitary Rutland County Council, of which Oakham is the headquarters. Tourist attractions in Oakham include All Saints' Church and Oakham Castle. Another popular and historic feature is the open-air market held in the town's market square every Wednesday and Saturday (near the ancient octagonal Buttercross with its pyramidal roof and wooden stocks, a Grade I listed building).

The impressive spire of Oakham parish church, built during the 14th century, dominates distant views of the town for several miles in all directions. Restored in 1857–58 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the church is a Grade I listed building. Oakham Castle, in Oakham, Rutland, was constructed between 1180 and 1190 for Walchelin de Ferriers, Lord of the Manor of Oakham. The Castle is known for its collection of massive horseshoes and is also recognised as one of the best examples of domestic Norman architecture in England.

Rutland County Museum is located in Oakham, Rutland, in the old Riding School of the Rutland Fencible Cavalry which was built in 1794-95. The Birmingham to Stansted Airport railway line runs through the town, providing links to Birmingham, Leicester, Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport. Oakham railway station is positioned approximately halfway between Peterborough railway station and Leicester railway station

Oakham is on the A606 between Melton Mowbray and Stamford. On 10 January 2007, the A606 bypass opened diverting traffic from the town centre. The Oakham Canal connected the town to the Melton Mowbray Navigation, the River Soar and the national waterways system between 1802 and 1847.

Places to see in ( Uppingham - UK )

Places to see in ( Uppingham - UK )

Uppingham is a market town in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England, located on the A47 between Leicester and Peterborough, about 6 miles south of the county town, Oakham on the A6003 road. The market square is transformed once a year into the only fatstock show still to be held in temporary penning in a traditional market town. The first recorded show was in 1889. In 2011, 140 sheep, 24 pigs and 20 cattle were entered. The event attracts farmers from all over the area who exhibit their prize livestock and toast their acquaintances afterwards in The Falcon Hotel.

A little over 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north-west at Castle Hill are the earthwork remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle. The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Uppingham is largely 14th century. It is perhaps known particularly for the early ministry of Jeremy Taylor. Uppingham Workhouse was first recorded in 1777 with space for 40 inmates. Until 1834 it was a parish workhouse, but in 1836 the Uppingham Poor Law Union began, and a new Union workhouse was built on Leicester Road to house 158 people to a design by architect William Donthorne. In the World War I, the building was used as an auxiliary hospital staffed by a Voluntary Aid Detachment. The workhouse was closed in 1929, and taken over by Uppingham School which uses the building as a boarding house for 60 girls called Constables.

The main local authority is Rutland County Council which is responsible for most local services. Uppingham ward, which includes the neighbouring parish of Beaumont Chase, has three councillors out of a total of 26 on the County Council. In addition, Uppingham Town Council, based at Uppingham Town Hall, is responsible for some services such as allotments, cemeteries and open spaces.

There is no railway station in Uppingham. The nearest railway station at present is Oakham – 6 miles (10 km) north – on the cross-country line between Birmingham, Leicester and Peterborough. Alternatively, Corby station 9 miles (14 km) south on the Oakham branch of the Midland Main Line provides frequent services to London.

Historically, Uppingham railway station, at the end of a branch line from Seaton, was opened in 1894 and was located at the end of Queen Street. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1960 and the line closed completely in 1964. The station area has now been redeveloped as an industrial estate. Although the operational railway line runs closest to Uppingham at Manton Junction, it has no station.

TOP 10 Things to do in Kingston-Upon-Hull, England 2023!

Kingston-Upon-Hull, England is an amazing place to visit in England. If you want to know top 10 what to do in Kingston-Upon-Hull or you need a travel guide, please keep watching.

4. East Park
Hull's largest open space, dog-friendly East Park is a delight to explore. Notable features of this lovely park include an animal compound with deer, wallabies, rheas, and peacocks, as well as a variety of native Australian birds. It also hosts regular concerts and other events such as the Hull Show in warmer weather.
Opened in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, this Grade-II-listed park is a vibrant green space encompassing some 130 acres of parkland. Also well worth a visit is nearby Queens Gardens, with its lovely floral displays, fountains, and ponds.

3. Burton Constable Hall & Grounds
An easy 25-minute drive northeast of the Hull Maritime Museum, Elizabethan-era Burton Constable Hall makes for a fun excursion from the city center. The oldest parts of this sprawling manor house date back to the 12th century, and the same family – the Constables – have lived here for well over 400 years.
Highlights of a visit include seeing the home's well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century interiors, including the spectacular staircase, and a rare cabinet of curiosities. Be sure to allocate some time to explore the estate's impressive 300-acre grounds. Afterward, splurge on a memorable afternoon tea.

2. Waters' Edge Country Park & Visitor Centre
Paying a visit and exploring Waters' Edge Country Park & Visitor Centre is one of the best free things to do in Hull. Located on the south bank of the Humber River, this wildlife and nature sanctuary is located just steps away from the Humber Bridge. Yet its proximity to this major Hull attraction doesn't detract from a visit. The views over this remarkable feat of engineering are quite dramatic, especially when framed by the natural setting of the park.
In addition to the fun-to-walk trails and boardwalks, be sure to pop into the Visitor Centre, which features fun activities for kids, as well as a playground. There's also an on-site shop and café.

1. Barton-upon-Humber
The town of Barton-upon-Humber – usually simply referred to as Barton – is just 11 miles from Hull on the south side of the Humber, a trip that involves crossing the Humber Bridge.
Barton is home to the 1,000-year-old St. Peter's Church, notable for its more than 2,800 burials from Anglo-Saxon to Victorian times. Now under the auspices of English Heritage (with limited opening hours), its Anglo-Saxon tower and baptistery have helped make it one of the most studied churches in England.
Other attractions in historic Barton include the Baysgarth House Museum, the Wilderspin National School Museum, and 51 Fleetgate, believed to be the oldest residential house in North Lincolnshire.

Oakham Town Walk. A Trip from Great Casterton to Oakham.

This video was made during short trip around Rutland. the first destination is village of Great Casterton. And than we stopped at Oakham to do some little walk through this cozy town.
Great Casterton is a village situated in Rutland on the boarder of Lincolnshire, around 2 miles from Stamford. This settlement was first recorded in 44 AD as a Roman fort. The place chosen by Romans to build a fort was really important and strategic. It stands on the cross of Ermine Street (Roman road) and river of Gwash. Now it is quiet village with 13th century church in it, and only one inn - Crown Inn.
Another destination is the market town of Oakham. The town contains many points of historic interest. The first one is Oakham Castle. This is lovely open place where we can walk and enjoy mealtime. Only Great Hall survived from the whole castle. Now, it is the museum that contains around 230 massive horseshoes.
From the castle you can get to the town's market place with it's famous Butter Cross - 16th century wooden building. From Market Place narrow footpass leads to Oakham Old School building and All Saints' Church. The school in Oakham was founded in 1584. It stands nearby the church.
Enjoy your time in Oakham!

Oakham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in England's smallest historic county of Rutland, and around 20 miles east of Leicester, is the town of Oakham.

The name 'Oakham' literally translates to 'Occa's homestead', where Occa is the name of a Saxon leader. Within the town centre is one of the best-preserved Norman buildings in the country. The Great Hall of Oakham Castle was built between 1180 and 1190 and is Grade I listed. A tradition has been in place for centuries whereby visitors from the aristocracy should forfeit a horseshoe to the Lord of the Manor of Oakham on their first visit to the town. Thus, the hall is decked out with over 200 of these horseshoes. King Edward IV was one such visitor to make this customary donation in 1470.

Other historic buildings in Oakham include All Saints Church. Built around the 13th to 14th century, the spire of the church can be seen across town for many miles. Oakham School is also noteworthy, having been founded back in 1584. Directly outside the school gates is the Butter Cross. This structure dates back to sometime before 1611, based on it appearing on a map from that year. A butter cross is a type of market cross where buyers and sellers would congregate under the protective roof to trade eggs and dairy products.

Another architectural quirk of Oakham is a series of thatched houses around the town, particularly on Northgate. These are possibly of early 17th century origin. Roof thatching was common in the Middle Ages as an effective means of insulation, especially in an era long before cavity wall and loft insulation. However, thatched roofs went out of fashion due to the risk of fire they created, making them a very rare sight in modern-day England.

Oakham is one of just two towns in the county of Rutland - the other town being Uppingham. Oakham has the only train station in the county. Opening originally in 1848, Oakham Station has direct links to Birmingham, Leicester, Peterborough and Stansted Airport, making the town more well-connected than it might outwardly appear. In 1974 Rutland was swallowed up by Leicestershire, only to be reinstated as a county in 1997. Rutland was the inspiration for the TV comedy sketch series Rutland Weekend Television, hosted by Eric Idle. Its most famous sketch was arguably The Rutles - a mockumentary-style parody of The Beatles, hailing from Rutland.

Oakham - Least Used Station in Rutland

The County of Rutland has just ONE station in it - Oakham! Which means it's the least *and* most used station .. time to go there with Sam, who I get to do a drawing. We also feature the Welland Viaduct! And a whole bunch of other fun stuff too!

Sam designs brilliant things, if you'd like to hire him for a job/project his website is here:
