10 Best Things To Do In Slovenia
Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of the biggest Slovenia attractions, making it a must-see during your visit. Every year thousands of people are attracted to the giant azure lake and the quaint island which sits in the center.

Hidden away in the Alps, Lake Bled looks like it was ripped straight from the pages of a fairytale book. Surrounded by rocky mountains, medieval castles, and lush forests, this spot is so beautiful that you’ll never want to leave!

Ljubljana

One of the best things to do in Slovenia is to explore the Old Town in Ljubljana. Whether you’ve never visited the place before or you can’t keep away, you’ll always stumble upon something new and interesting in Ljubljana Old Town.

The historic beating heart of Slovenia, Ljubljana Old Town is where you’ll find meandering canals which work their way under rustic stone bridges, picturesque homes next to Gothic cathedrals, and charming plazas lined with open-air cafes.

Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is one of the best places in Slovenia to try out different water sports and find out which is the one for you. Hidden away at the foot of the Bohinj Valley in the Julian Alps, this enormous lake is crystal-clear and perfectly still, making it the ideal place to enjoy a number of different sports.

Around the lake, you’ll find several kiosks where you can rent everything from kayaks and canoes to paddleboards and boats. If you’d rather take things a little easier, you can always just get in the lake and enjoy a cool swim.

Soča River

Zooming over rapids down the Soca River on a raft is one of the most exhilarating things you can do during your vacation in Slovenia. Whether you want to push yourself to the limit and try the most challenging route or get started with something a little simpler, you’ll find the perfect white water rafting tour for you.

The Soča River is an incredibly beautiful place to practice this sport. The deep turquoise color of the water, the steep canyon walls that rise up either side, and the thick, towering trees make this one of the most gorgeous places in all of Slovenia.

Kranjska Gora
Kranjska Gora is an attractive mountain and tourist sports centre throughout the year. In the winter it sees Alpine skiers compete and top ski jumpers break new records at the near-by Planica. Cyclists endeavour to conquer the highest Slovenian mountain pass, and hikers can stop by many points of interest.

Postojna Cave

Postojna Cave is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world's largest karst monuments. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, the astonishing diversity of Karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors. Check the timetable of visits by months.

Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge, carved by Radovna River, is located near Gorje, approximately 4 kilometres north-west from Bled. The 1.6-kilometre long gorge is carved amidst the glorious vertical walls of Hom and Boršt hills, and it is highlighted by the Radovna River and its waterfalls, pools and rapids.

Our visit Ljubljana travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Slovene, Balkan and Bosnian), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, churches, the old town, quirky neighborhoods, museums and along the river. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Ljubljana tourism brochure, Ljubljana itinerary or Ljubljana, Slovenia city tour also known as Laibach.

10 Things to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Prešeren Square is a central meeting spot in the heart of the Old Town, so it made sense to start our tour of Ljubljana here. You’ll find the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, lots of gelato shops, and the baffling bridge we just mentioned.

As for the reasoning behind the Triple Bridge and the famed dragon bridge, which is guarded by four dragons.

Ljubljana’s Central Market is another spot worth checking out.

We needed to sample some Slovenian food so we went to Allegria.
Sam ordered Zlikrofi (zhlee-krofi), a Slovenian dumpling stuffed with potato + lamb goulash along with Slovenian sausage with cabbage & potatoes.

Ljubljana Castle, which sits on Castle Hill overlooking the city. Built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century, Ljubljana Castle has seen many redesigns and renovations. Climb the Outlook Tower for 360 degree views of the city.

There are departures for cruises down the Ljubljanica. We boarded a cruise directly underneath the Love Lock Bridge, which is actually called Mesarski Most. It was our favourite activity in Ljubljana and it was a super relaxed way to watch the city.

Metelkova is home to the best street art.

One place we really enjoyed was Sarajevo 84, a restaurant specializing in Balkan cuisine. The portions massive & everything we ordered was delicious.

We had a feast featuring: grilled meat with pita and onions, baked beans and sausage, roasted peppers, and a flaky pastry stuffed with cheese. It only came to 23 Euros.

Speaking of galleries and museums, a few you’ll find include: the National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Slovenia.

We finished off at Tivoli, which is the largest park in Ljubljana.

And that’s it for our time in Ljubljana. Our visit was short, tasty, and relaxing, and we’re really glad we made some time to visit this underrated capital.

Now you guys know the drill; if there are any other things to do in Ljubljana that we may have missed in this travel guide, feel free to share your suggestions with fellow travellers below.

Route Description
The Ljubljanica River is one of the most special bodies of water in Slovenia, which is supplied with many karst influent streams. It vanishes into the ground and comes to the surface many times along its long and varied course, each time with a different name. It springs up in the foothills of Mount Snežnik as the Trbuhovca Stream, then later as the Obrh Stream, the Stržen Stream, the Rak Stream, the Pivka and Unica rivers, until it rises to the surface for the final time near Vrhnika as the Ljubljanica River. Its springs are divided into three major groups known as Močilnik, Retovje and Bistra. In addition, there are many other smaller springs, wells and affluents in this area.

Interesting Facts
Under the Vita, Olja and Juna Recommend column, you can hear the Tale of the Town of Vrhnika. Every child, even your inner child, will enjoy hearing it. Read a few interesting facts on the three major groups of springs below.

Močilnik is a limestone steephead valley, out of which waters from the Big Močilnik Spring (Veliki Močilnik) and the Little Močilnik Spring (Mali Močilnik) flow into the Little Ljubljanica River (Mala Ljubljanica). The Big Močilnik Spring is located at the foot of the Devil’s Cliffs (Hudičeve skale), which are 40 meters (131.2 feet) high. According to Greek mythology, Greek heroes – Jason and the Argonauts – ended their sail along Ljubljanica right here. They disassembled their ship and carried it on their shoulders to the Adriatic Sea. As a memorial to their journey, Vrhnika’s emblem is an image of the ship Argo, and locals and visitors remember them every year during the Argonaut Days Festival.

In the Retovje Valley, slightly hidden in the wooded foothills of Raskovec Hill and the Ljubljana Peak, lies the spring of Big Ljubljanica Stream (Velika Ljubljanica), which joins the Little Ljubljanica Stream (Mala Ljubljanica) from Močilnik after about 1 km (0.10 miles) in the village of Verd. From here on, the river is called Ljubljanica. There are many little springs in the valley: ‘Pod skalco’, ‘Pod orehom’, ‘Malo okence’ and ‘Veliko okence’. The springs of the Big Ljubljanica Stream produce the greatest volume of water of all the Ljubljanica springs and in the 19th century more than 10 water powered sawmills were located here.

Bistra Springs can be found at the foot of a steep, tectonically shaped karst hillside halfway between the towns of Vrhnika and Borovnica. Their streams form the Bistra River about 400 meters (437 yards) away. Their defensive position played a key role for the protection of the Bistra Monastery. Springs’ waters come from the Cerknica Karst Field, the Rakov Škocjan Park and the Planina Karst Field. In the past, the water powered mills and other equipment at the monastery and the Bistra Castle. The flow of water was controlled by sluice gates close to the mills and sawmills.

Another natural wonder among the Ljubljanica Springs is the Lintvern Spring, the source of the Bela Stream. Lintvern is a natural monument and a karst phenomenon. Its water flow is not constant; sometimes the water gushes out with great force but at times the spring completely dries up. The Slovenian polymath Johann Weikhard von Valvasor wrote (1689) that the Lintvern Spring occasionally spews out baby dragons. These ‘dragons’, off course, were probably human fish offspring.

Lake Bled Travel Guide | Day Trip from Ljubljana, Slovenia Video Transcript:

Lake Bled is probably the most popular day trip you can take from Ljubljana. This is a lake that sits on the Julian Alps, and in the middle of the lake you have a small island with a church - it’s about as picturesque as it gets and it draws massive crowds, but first, the journey there.

Bled Castle is a medieval castle that was built on a cliff rising 130 meters over Lake Bled. According to written sources, this is the oldest castle in Slovenia, first being mentioned in a document from the year 1011. The castle is set up around two courtyards which are connected with a staircase. Once you’re there, you can visit the chapel, check out some of the exhibits, watch a demonstration at the castle forge, or eat at the castle coffee shop or restaurant.

After the castle visit, we hiked back down and started our walk along Lake Bled because we were still feeling pretty stuffed from lunch. Little did we know this would take us several hours to complete.

After eating our slice of Bled Cream Cake, or Kremsnita, it was finally time to arrange a boat ride to Bled Island. While you can rent your own row boat to take out on the island, we chose to pay the 14 Euros per person to have someone else do the hard work. However, if you’re with a group of friends or travelling with family, it’s definitely cheaper to just rent a boat and row it yourself.

Bled Island is very small and it got pretty crowded even though it was low season. Forty minutes turned out to be plenty of time to climb up, have a look around, and enjoy some ice cream.

Now one last piece of advice: we visited in the off-season and at the end of the day, we found out there were not enough buses to transport everyone from Lake Bled back to Ljubljana.

We weren’t able to get on one bus because it was full, so we waited an hour and a half for the next one. By then, more day-trippers like us had gathered, and once again, not everyone could get on the bus, leaving a lot of people stranded, having to find a taxi or other alternative.

There was a lot of pushing and shoving, and many visitors with prepaid tickets were visibly upset.

Because our bus was full, this also meant that even though there were several scheduled stops on the way back to Ljubljana, we couldn’t pick up any passengers along the way, many of them who had been waiting for hours.

Lake Bled has experienced a boom in tourism, but the infrastructure to transport people hasn’t quite caught up yet. After a nice day visiting Bled, getting out of there proved to be very chaotic and stressful. Hopefully things will change in the future, but until then, know that leaving at the end can be tricky.

This is part of our Travel in Slovenia video series showcasing Slovenian food, Slovenian culture and Slovenian cuisine.

Soča Valley | You Have to see | Beatiful River | Relax walking | Most na Soči | Slovenia | Europe 4K

5 / Soča Valley | You Have to see | Beatiful River | Relax walking | Most na Soči | Slovenia | Europe 4K

On Beatiful River Soča you find beatiful lake Most na Soči, where you can find Relax and Peacefull - Slovenia - Europe

The main attraction of Mosta na Soča is the lake, which in Slovenia is called the pearl of Posočja... Although it is artificial, it preserves the emerald color of the mysterious Soča and complements the colorfulness of the place. It lies on a natural pier above the confluence of the Idrijca and Soča rivers.

The lake attracts many tourists who enjoy the well-maintained, scenic and undemanding walking trails. The path by the lake will be extended, currently the final part of the path is under construction, so watch the video until the end.

Most na Soča is also an excellent starting point for various sports activities.
You can also swim in the lake, go by boat or by boat. The lake is a true paradise for fishermen who come to fish from all over the world! The most characteristic of the fish is the native Soka trout (salmo trutta marmoratus), here we also find grayling, brook trout, crosses between Soka and brook trout, rainbow trout, rockfish, barbel and tench.

Children, as well as adults, are inspired by wild ducks and herons, sometimes by swans.

They take you around the lake by boat, the price of the ride is 10 euros for two hours. Children, students, pensioners or families have a discount. You can also order lunch on the ship Lucija.

There are a few bars by the lake where you can drink coffee or eat. On the other side you can also find a campsite. There are also a few places to stay in the area, the easiest way to find them is on airbnb.com or booking.com

They have several organized parking lots in the area, where you can always find a free space.

Some more technical information: The storage lake was created in 1938 for the needs of the Doblar hydroelectric plant. It is 7 km long, the maximum depth is 32 m. At its widest part, near Most na Soča, it reaches a width of 600 m.

I recommend a tour, a walk, a boat trip, drinking or coffee and relaxing right by the lake! Simply put: wonderful and amazing!

Slovenia: I never even heard of this country before! Euro Road Trip!

My friends and I did a 10 hour road trip from Switzerland to Slovenia. I knew nothing about this country and its capital of Ljbubljana prior to coming but after visiting I found such a beautiful area called Lake Bled with a little church on an island. Oh, and there's great Chinese food there too. Thank you to @fizzybeardmusic (

10 Must Try Foods/Drinks in Slovenia

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Bordered by four countries and with a long, varied history of being a part of different states and empires, Slovenia is today an independent country with a beautiful melody of languages, cultures and cuisines.

Welcome to ThingsToDo CHannel we publish new videos every day, so be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to be updated on our latest videos.

Check out these 10 must-try Slovenian foods and drinks that recall the history of its neighbors and its landscapes.

Slovenian craft beer.

If you’re eating Slovenian food, you’ll want to accompany it with Slovenian beer (pivo). Slovenian beer is in the midst of a renaissance. Although mass-produced domestic brands like Lasko and Union still dominate the market, new microbreweries are continually popping up and pumping out a range of quality Slovenian craft beers.

Carniolan Sausage.

For its size, Slovenia packs a mighty punch on the gastronomy scene: there are 23 gastronomic regions and 170 distinct dishes claimed by this small central European country.

Slovenian wine.

Slovenia has been growing grapes and producing wine for thousands of years. The country has over 28,000 vineyards and produces between 80 and 90 million litres of wine every year.

Gibanica.

Gibanica is a layered cake filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins, and ricotta. It’s probably the most popular sweet in Slovenia and is typically eaten for breakfast. The cake originally hails from the Prekmurje region in the country’s far northeast (bordering Hungary), but you’ll find it all over the country.

Slovenian Spirits.

While Slovenians love beer and wine, there’s really only one national drink: schnapps. Called zganje in the local lingo, making the stuff is also a national past-time, and although you can buy factory-made bottles of schnapps in liquor stores and supermarkets, it’s the locally made zganje brewed in someone’s garage that’s usually the best. Thankfully, you don’t have to know anyone to sample some of the finest schnapps in Slovenia, because you can count on all self-respecting bars across the country to stock some of the best local varieties in a wide variety of flavors, including pear, peach, lemon, and blueberry.

Grilled Trout.

Home to many beautiful lakes and countless rivers and mountain streams, Slovenia is a country where fish is often found on menus. The ultimate fish to try in Slovenia is river trout. After a day of outdoor fun, make sure to order a whole grilled trout with some mashed potatoes on the side. If you’re going to have any traditional Slovenian food, let it be grilled trout.

Veal Stew with Lard and Buckwheat Mush.

As a historically rural country with a significant agricultural background, Slovenia loves its stews. There are many different types of stews, their ingredients ranging from vegetables to all types of meats and even actual intestines. This fantastic veal stew with lard and the typical complementary buckwheat mush before heading out for a hike in the Julian Alps in Triglav National Park.

Cheese Dumplings.

Another typical Slovenian food is cheese dumplings. These dumplings contain cottage cheese and are sometimes sprinkled with a little bit of sugar to give it a somewhat sweet taste. Served with sour cream, this is another hearty Slovenian dish—excellent to fill your stomach after an active day of sightseeing.

Steak with Truffles.

Truffles are a much-used ingredient in Istria, the coastal region that extends between Slovenia and northern Croatia. This quaint region is home to extensive old oak forests, which happen to be the perfect habitat for truffles. As it is rather difficult to find good truffles—dogs are specifically trained to find truffles that are buried deep in between the oaks’ roots—they tend to be quite pricey. It’s absolutely worth splurging on a dish that contains truffles, though. They taste, unlike any other mushroom that you’ve ever tasted.

Slovenian Doughnuts: Krofi.

Every culture seems to have its own fried dough and of course, we want to try them all. Krofi are special because they come with a beautiful, bright hint of citrus, thanks to lemon zest. Try krofi that has a layer of apricot jam inside- a favorite Slovenian flavor.

LAKE BLED SLOVENIA | Rowing to the Island + Romantic Slovenian Tradition

Lake Bled is one of the most gorgeous places to visit in Slovenia, and in our opinion, all of Europe. You HAVE TO row a boat to the island, and if you're a newlywed, well...watch to find out!

We loved exploring Slovenia's Lake Bled, and at only an hour from Ljubljana, it's a can't miss destination. Be sure to hike to Bled Castle, and of course, try a slice of Cream Cake - it's to die for!
