As we walk through this Nicaragua artisan village we explore the local pottery shops and see some of the impressive work on display. We look at the history of the town and how it celebrates its patron saint Saint John the Baptist. Fiestas patronales in Nicaragua are a big deal and San Juan de Oriente is famous for it’s baile de los chinegros – a traditional Nicaraguan dance with some very interesting dancing equipment used called ‘chilillos’. There is nothing more heart warming than watching a Children's Christmas Parade in Granada Nicaragua! This is the cutest event in Nicaragua! This Nicaragua festival is La Pastorela and it reenacts the Nativity scene, with children dressing up as Joseph and Mary, the 3 wise men, shepherds and angels. We count ourselves lucky that living in Nicaragua during Covid has given us the unique opportunity to experience different Christmas traditions around the world.

Catarina, Masaya Nicaragua
Catarina pertenece al departamento de Masaya. Limita al norte con el municipio de Masaya, al sur con el municipio de San Juan de Oriente, al este con el municipio de Granada y al oeste con el municipio de Niquinohomo. Su extensión territorial es de 11 kilómetros cuadrados.
La falta de documentos históricos presenta a Catarina como un pueblo desconocido antes de la colonia española, no así su vecino San Juan de Oriente. Los datos históricos escritos datan del siglo XVI por Monseñor Pedro Agustín Morel de Santa Cruz, Obispo de Nicaragua y Costa Rica, en 15513 donde resalta la existencia de una confederación indígena llamada Namotiva a la cual pertenece Catarina, junto a sus pueblos vecinos San Juan de Oriente y Niquinohomo.
Existe una fuente de agua, la Laguna de Apoyo, proveniente de un volcán extinto, cuyo cráter presenta una extensión más o menos circular de unos 4 kilómetros de diámetro. En ella existen algunas especies autóctonas de peces clasificados recientemente. Diversos manantiales y riachuelos se encuentran entre las laderas.

ya que no cuenta con restaurantes o vendedores ambulantes.

Nikaragua, Orta Amerika’da en çok sevdiğimiz ülkelerden biri oldu. Orta Amerika’nın en büyük gölü olan Nikaragua gölü birçok adacığı barındırmakta. Yerli kabililer bu göle tatlı deniz anlamına gelen “Cocibolca” diyorlar. Ayrıca köpekbalığı ve kılıçbalığı gibi okyanus canlılarını barındıran tek tatlı su gölü olma özelliğine sahip. İşte bu gölde yer alan Isla de Ometepe (Ometepe Adası) bile Nikaragua’ya gitmek için başlı başına bir neden olabilir ki göller ve volkanlar ülkesi çok daha fazlasını sunuyor.
Honduras’dan Guasaule kapısından giriş yaptığımız Nikaragua’daki ilk gecemizi Orta Amerika’daki en büyük katedrale sahip olan Leon şehrinde geçirdik. Leon şehri devrimin başkenti diye anılıyor ve diktatörlüğün elinden kurtulan ilk şehir olmuş. Leon’dan civarındaki volkanlara farklı aktiviteler içeren turlar düzenleniyor.
Biz tercihimizi Masaya Volkanı’ndan yana yaptık. Nasıl olsa Granada’ya geçerken yolumuzun üzerindeydi ve tursuz motorla gitme şansımız vardı…
Masaya Volkanı, aynı isimli (Volkan Masaya Milli Parkı) Nikaragua’nın ilk ve en büyük milli parkının içinde yer alıyor. Ülkenin en aktif volkanı olan Masaya Volkanı’nda hayatımızda ilk kez gördüğümüz lav etkileyiciydi ve müthiş bir tecrübe oldu. Araçla volkanın olduğu yere kadar gidilebiliyor ama 5-10 dakikadan fazla kalınmasına izin verilmiyor. Zaten 5 dk.dan sonra sülfür kokusu rahatsız etmeye başlıyor. Akşamları da ziyaret edilebiliyor ama seçim dönemine denk geldiğimizden akşam girişi iptal edilmişti. Gecesini düşünemiyoruz…
Masaya ve Granada arasında Beyaz Kasabalar olarak bilinen küçük kasabalar var. Beyaz boyalı duvarları ve gösterişli kapıları ile kerpiç yapıların olduğunu okuduysak da geçerken beyaz yapılardan çok renkliler dikkatimizi çekti.
Apoyo Krater Gölü’ne giderken uğradığımız Diriomo kasabası; sütlü şekerlemeleri ile ünlüymüş. Diria kasabası ise; efsaneleri ve büyücülük hakkındaki hikayeleri ile tanınıyor. İçlerinde en ilgi gören kasaba; Apoyo Lagünü’nün muhteşem manzarasını izleyeceğiniz Catarina’dır. El Mirador’dan eşsiz manzarayı izlemeye doyamayacaksınız.
SAN Juan de Oriente, en iyi seramiklerin işlendiği kasabadır.
Niquinohomo’nun ulusal kahramanı, Augusto C. Sandino’nun doğum yeri Nandasmo’dan sonra Masatepe, Jinotepe, San Marcos ve Diriamba gibi diğer kasabalar gelir.
Granada şehri daha turistik, etkileyici, güzel bir kolonyal şehir. Özellikle farklı renklerde boyanmış rengarenk binaları ile çok fotojenik duruyor. Hele o evlerin kapıları yok mu hepsini fotoğraflamak istiyorsunuz.
Orta Amerika’da kaldığımız en güzel yerlerden birisi kesinlikle Isla de Ometepe‘de oldu. Hotel Finca Venecia’da göle nazır kaldığımız kabinlerin balkonundan izlediğimiz gün doğum ve batımları paha biçilmezdi. Otelin gidiş yolu üzerinde kalan La Paloma havaalanı’ndan haftada sadece birkaç uçuş yapılıyor. Adadaki iki volkan (Consepcion ve Maderas) her yerden rahatlıkla görülüyor. Ayrıca her iki volkana da turlar yapılıyor ama 8-10 saatlik yürüyüşe hazırlıklı olun.
Nikaragua’yı merak edenlere blogdaki yazımıza bekleriz... Bizden sonra ülke biraz karıştı ama toparlanması uzun sürmedi...
