Jocko's Steakhouse - Best Steak on the West Coast

We took a quick road trip with Joel, Eric & Cindy to Jocko's Steakhouse in Nipomo, CA. I've been going here for over 25 years, thanks to my friend Deron who took me there a long time ago. You can't beat the price and the quality and flavor of the steak here.

It's a great place for breakfast as well as lunch. They don't open the grill until 4:30pm Mon-Sat, and Sun sometime around noon. So if you want a grilled steak, make reservations or else you'll wait for hours.

We also did a 2.5 mile hike at the Morro Bay State Park, it was pretty cloudy so we didn't get a good view of the big rock, but it was a nice hike and we needed it after all that meat.

We left Eric and Cindy in Morro Bay, they were staying in the area another night, then camping with friends in Pismo Beach. Joel, Autumn and I drove back to Calabasas to pick up Joel's Mini Cooper, then found a Mediterranean restaurant nearby. It wasn't bad, but didn't compare with Jocko's. But it was good to eat something lighter for a change.

Joel went home and we stayed at the La Quinta Inn Thousand Oaks, then went to my mom's house the next morning to visit family visiting from out of town.

Dana Adobe in Nipomo

Want to step back into California history? The historic Dana Adobe in Nipomo transports visitors back to the time of vaqueros, ranchos and Mexican land grants. In 1828, William Dana, a sea captain from Boston, married the daughter of Carlos Antonio Carrillo, Governor of Alta California. Dana and his wife, Maria Josefa Carrillo, accepted a Mexican land grant called Rancho Nipomo, which comprised 38,000 acres.

In 1851, construction finished on what came to be known as the Dana Adobe, which the captain designed and built for his wife and 16 children. The house is the oldest in San Luis Obispo County, and was the first stopping place for travelers south of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Visitors could buy or sell a variety of goods at the adobe and it was an important waypoint along the mail route between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

After Captain Dana’s death, the Dana Adobe was left abandoned and dilapidated. A non-profit organization formed in 1999 restored it to its former state. The Dana Adobe is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as a California Historical Landmark in 2001. For first-timer visitors, a docent-led tour offers a fun, educational way to jump into its history.

Speaking of dreaming, you won't believe the sights of Montana de Oro when you arrive in Los Osos - this state park is not to be missed. Head slightly inland and you'll find a coastal wine region in Edna and Arroyo Grande Valleys, along with several historic buildings. Come back to the coast for Avila Beach and its three piers, family friendly beaches and oceanfront promenade before turning south to the towns of Oceano and Nipomo. At these last stops you'll laugh until you cry at a classic melodrama theater and marvel at a luffa farm.
