I traveled to Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu, southwestern Japan. This is where you will find Japan's Easter Island. Miyazaki has tropical atmosphere and it's a relaxing place to visit. Also, you'll find a delicious chicken nanban!

I am especially excited about this weeks video because we are going to Miyazaki, Japan! We’ve actually been to Miyazaki before but never made it all the way out to the coast. I had plans to go earlier in the summer but the week we had planned to go we saw torrential downpours and decided to reschedule. This trip has been on my list of places to go because of the beautiful dog friendly Airbnb that we found. A friend actually stayed in the Airbnb last spring and also recommended it so I knew I wanted to go.

I wasn’t sure about the city the Airbnb was in (Hyuga, Miyazaki) but we ended up loving the small surf town vibes that it gave off. It wasn’t touristy at all and honestly felt like a local hang out. We let Olive swim on the beach in a huge tide pool and then when all the surfers left for the workweek we let her let loose on the beach and run to her hearts content. It wasn’t crowded at all, but I would say that is more likely due to the time of year. I’m sure during the height of summer Hyuga is a VERY popular place to be.
Hyuga was about a 4.5hr drive from Sasebo and we took the route through Oita on the way there. We stopped at a coffee shop AND a brewery and I definitely recommend both of them! There is something really great about finding these random places out in the middle of nowhere! It made the drive much more enjoyable to have fun stops along the way.

Q: How long was the trip?
A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.
Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.
Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD
Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals
Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

The Phoenix Seagaia Resort is a gigantic oceanside resort spanning nearly 10 kilometers of coastline just north of central Miyazaki City. More than just a collection of hotels, Seagaia is a symbol of Miyazaki's resort heritage and offers its guests a lot of things to do.
Although some parts of Seagaia have been closed because of post economic bubble restructuring, there are still many attractions on the grounds including hot springs, beaches with excellent surfing and a zoo. There are also world CLASS tennis and golf facilities where international competitions are regularｌｙheld.
Miyazaki was once the most popular honeymoon site for domestic newlyweds until it was exceeded by Okinawa and Hawaii in the 1980s. The Seagaia resort was built in the early 1990s as state of the art symbol of Miyazaki's resort tourism with the hope of attracting tourists and revitalizing the economy.
By 2001, however, the Seagaia Resort went bankrupt and was sold to a foreign investment firm that revitalized the resort, streamlined its operations and closed unprofitable attractions like the Ocean Dome, which is the world's largest indoor water park and a main landmark of the resort. More recently the resort, which is still struggling financially, was sold to Sega Sammy in 2012.

This is one of my best summer vacations in Japan. Their local food, which is “chicken nanban” is the best! We were so lucky to be able to try it at a renowned restaurant, Naochan. Usually, a lot of people queue outside, but on that day, fortunately, we arrived just right after they had opened the restaurant. So we were able to secure seats for ourselves. ✨ I will surely crave for chicken nanban in the days to come! ???? It was also our first time to go surfing and our teacher was so patient and friendly with us. I found myself falling in love with Miyazaki with its rich history and heritage, beautiful sights, delicious dishes, kind people, and just the good vibes. I really recommend you to visit Miyazaki, especially when you’re traveling to Kyushu. Please include this in your itinerary. Definitely worth a visit! ????

Heading back north after exploring the Nichinan Coast, we stopped at Aoshima, an island just south of Miyazaki City. It seems to be the most popular thing when Googling about Miyazaki.
Highlight of the tiny island include, the Devils Washboard and Aoshima Shrine in the jungle.
Overall, a cute little island worth a stop if passing through Miyazaki.

Sun Messe Nichinan
As a tribute to the Moai of Easter Island. The Sun Messe statues are the only replicas allowed to be made in accordance with the originals in the entire world. The only place where you can find these cool statues is at this theme park located in Miyazaki. The statues were built back in 1996 and each statue is endowed with its own original specialized blessing. From financial success, academics, health, etc. there is a statue that you can pray to and ask for the blessing and help from the spirit of that particular statue.
Standing at 5.5 m and weighing in at a weight of 18 tons. These statues were made with special permission from the Easter Island Elder Association.
One interesting note is that a Japanese company was sent and spent three years repairing 15 Moai statues on Easter Island that were toppled, this company helped in restoring them to their original glory. As a gesture of gratitude to show eternal friendship from the island's people and as a result, the Japanese were given permission and allowed to recreate replicas of these statues and to display them and this theme park along the coast in Miyazaki is where you can find them. Great place to go during the spring-summer and fall.
They also have a place to eat and vending machines with an assortment of drinks.

Takaharu-cho, Miyazaki prefecture is well known to Japanese as the small town surrounding mountains. There is a shrine called “Sanojinja” which worships the first Japanese Emperor, ”Jinmu Tennou.” In this town, Japanese national pride and virtue are still alive to this day.
