Belgium: Ooidonk Castle and its park

Ooidonk Castle is a monumental ancient moated castle south of the Belgian village of Sint-Maria-Leerne, not far from Deinze.

A fortress was first built on the site of the present castle in 1230, intended to defend the city of Ghent and to fortify the river Leie.
After its destruction is was rebuilt and enlarged from 1381 onwards. Moats were added, so that the castle could only be reached by drawbridge, and the defences were strengthened with four towers.

In the 15th century the castle came into the possession of the well-known French noble family of Montmorency.
In the turmoil of religious wars the castle was destroyed twice, in 1491 and in 1579. After the fire of 1579 it was rebuilt again, and this building survives as the present castle.

Ooidonk Castle is now privately owned.
The owner has expanded the castle, without prejudice to the playful Flemish Renaissance style. In the 19th century, the interior was renovated and the gardens were redesigned.
Ooidonk Castle is open to visitors since 1958 from 1 April to 15 September, the surrounding park (French gardens) can be visited during the whole year.

Cochem Castle, Germany

It is generally assumed that Cochem Castle was built around the year 1000 by the palatinate count Ezzo, son and successor to palatinate count Hermann Pusilius. The castle had a long and colorful history until French King Louis XIV had his troops obliterate it in 1689. The castle remained a colorful stone ruin for 180 years until wealthy Berlin businessman Louis Ravené decided to buy the ruins and rebuild the castle in 1868.!

Lissewege 06/2021

Between Bruges and Zeebruges, not far away from Dudzele, lies the peaceful village of Lissewege. Nowadays it is largely known as an artist's village. Lissewege is also called the white village, after the white chalked houses. At present, agriculture is the most important form of industry. But it was especially textile that made it one of the richest and most densily populated places in Flanders, although another source tells us that the village merely counted some 500 inhabitants in the Middle Ages.

The name of this place was recorded for the first time in 961 and the village thanks its existence to the construction of dikes that served as a protection of the region against the sea. Some 2 centuries later, the cultivation of the grounds was started by the abbey of Ter Doest, a division of the abbey of Ter Duinen (Koksijde). Because of the importance of this abbey for the area, she is more extensively described on another page.

Whether the village counted a lot of inhabitants or not, 500 or more, fact is that the church is gigantic and this certainly in relation to the village itself. The big church, with a tower of 50 meters (and actually only for 2/3 finished), was built between 1230 and 1270. How is it possible that such a small village could build such a large church? There are several stories that try to explain it. Most likely to be true is that she was constructed under supervision of the Templer Knights. These knights had to protect the pilgrims that were on their way to Santiago de Compostela, Rome and Jerusalem. For pilgrims coming from the north, their long journey began in Lissewege. Probably the church was financed by sacrificial gifts from the many pilgrims that passed this place. Not far from the church, in the 13th century, a castle (called the Upperhof) was built. Unfortunately, it doesn't exist anymore.

The religious wars caused the decline of the textile industry and meant the end of the prosperity of the village. In 1571, the abbey of Ter Doest was destructed by the Geuzen (protestant religious fighters) and in 1586, the church was plundered. However, a part of the church's treasures could be saved. Nowadays it is a very pleasant and quiet place with several nice little restaurants.

Abandoned Catskills Homowack Lodge

The former Homowack Lodge is in the Catskill Mountains, New York.

The defunct Homowack Lodge was one of the many Borscht Belt summer resorts in the Catskills that are now abandoned. The resort resides near the Homowack Creek, where it derives its name. The history of the Homowack Lodge is scarce, when it opened was probably in the 1920’s or after and its decline ran through the 1970’s through possibly the 1980’s, like with the Grossinger’s Resort and the Hotel Adler.

The Homowack Lodge in its prime offered many things to do such as physical activities like tennis, bowling and swimming. It also offered relaxing things like a theater stage to watch performers, a cocktail lounge and regular lounge.

The eventual decline and extreme decay of the Homowack Lodge increased over the years. An incident that occurred in 2009 of the lodge being used as a girls camp with a new name Machne Bnos Square, cause much controversy.

The town of Mamakating had cited numerous violations and tried to have the camp shut down, it was not until the New York State Department of Health intervened that the camp was closed. The campers and staff were endangered by the toxic mold, exposed wiring and insulation, and there were fire safety violations.
