The gateway to North Bengal, Malda, with its rich history and heritage, is one of the most famous tourist destinations of West Bengal, nestled at the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers. Malda town, with all its grace, adds to the beauty of Bengal.
Malda was previously known as English Bazaar. It got that name from the English factory that was established here in 1771. From Malda, you can visit Gaur and Pandua. Gaur was the capital of three dynasties of ancient Bengal - the Buddhist Palas, the Hindu Senas and the Muslim Nawabs. Pandua, once the alternate seat of power to Gaur, has the third largest concentration of Muslim monuments in Bengal. Historical monuments include the mosque Jami Masjid (1566) and the landmark Nimasari tower across the river. The Malda Museum has a great collection of the region's architectural and anthropological specimens.
During the 18th century, Malda was the seat of prosperous cotton and silk industries. The area grows rice, jute, legumes and oilseeds. Malda is also famous for its mangoes and mulberries.

Malda also known as the gateway of north Bengal is famous for it's mangoes , silk and jute. This town lies at a distance of 347 kms approx. from Kolkata. Malda, with its rich history and heritage, is one of the most famous tourist destinations of West Bengal, nestled at the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers.

मालदा ज़िला, भारत के पश्चिम बंगाल राज्य का एक ज़िला है। यह पश्चिम बंगाल की राजधानी कोलकाता से 347 किमी की दुरी पर स्थित है। मालदा को उत्तर बंगाल का प्रवेश द्वार भी कहा जाता है। यह कभी गौर-बंगा की राजधानी हुआ करती थी। मालदा जिले का मुख्यालय अंग्रेजी बाजार में है, जिसे मालदा भी कहा जाता है। मालदा, जिला मुख्यालय जो जिले को अपना नाम देता है, अपने शुरुआती दिनों के दौरान महानंदा नदी के किनारे ही विकसित हुआ, और अब यह जगह फूलबाड़ी के नाम से जाना जाता है। अभी भी यहाँ कुछ पुराने घर देखे जा सकते हैं। यह शहर 1925 से 1930 तक विकसित होना शुरू हुआ। अब इस शहर में लगभग 5 लाख लोग रहते हैं, और यह पश्चिम बंगाल के सबसे बड़े शहरों में से एक है। जिला संस्कृति और शिक्षा में अतीत की परंपराओं को बनाए रखता है।
क्षेत्रफल
जिले का क्षेत्रफल 3,733.66 वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैला हुआ है। यह मुर्शिदाबाद, उत्तर दिनाजपुर, दक्षिण दिनाजपुर जिला, झारखंड के संथाल परगना और बिहार के पूर्णिया जिलों के साथ-साथ बांग्लादेश से अपनी सीमाओं को साँझा करता है। जिले में दो उपखंड, 15 विकास खंड, 2 नगर पालिकाएँ, 146 ग्राम पंचायत और 3,701 गाँव में बांटा गया है। चंचल उपखंड में छह सामुदायिक विकास खंड शामिल हैं: चंचल- I, चंचल- II, रतुआ- I, रतुआ- II, हरिश्चंद्रपुर- I और हरिश्चंद्रपुर- II। मालदा सदर उपखंड में पुरानी मालदा नगरपालिका, अंग्रेजी बाजार नगरपालिका और नौ सामुदायिक विकास खंड शामिल हैं: अंग्रेजी बाजार, गज़ोल, हबीबपुर, कालियाचक- I, कालियाचक-द्वितीय, कालियाचक- III, मानिकचक, पुराना मालदा और बामंगोला।
जनसंख्या
2011 की जनगणना के अनुसार मालदा जिले की जनसंख्या 39,88,845 है। मालदा जिले में प्रति 1000 पुरुषों पर 939 महिलाओं का लिंगानुपात है। बंगाली जिले की पहली प्रमुख भाषा है।
अर्थव्यवस्था
जिले की अर्थव्यवस्था कृषि पर आधारित है। जिले में बड़े पैमाने पर उद्योग बहुत कम स्थापित हैं। आम, जूट और रेशम इस जिले के सबसे उल्लेखनीय उत्पाद हैं। इस क्षेत्र में उत्पादित आम की विशेष किस्म, फाजली, दुनिया भर में निर्यात की जाती है। चावल, जूट, फलियां और तिलहन आसपास के क्षेत्र में प्रमुख फसलें हैं। मालदा भारत में उत्कृष्ट गुणवत्ता वाले जूट का सबसे बड़ा उत्पादक है। शहतूत के बागान और आम के बाग भी बड़े क्षेत्रों में फैले हुए हैं; आम का व्यापार और रेशम निर्माण मुख्य आर्थिक गतिविधियाँ हैं।

जिले की साक्षरता दर 62.71% है। बार्लो गर्ल्स हाई स्कूल, ललित मोहन श्याम मोहिनी हाई स्कूल, मालदा सीसी गर्ल्स हाई स्कूल, मालदा रेलवे हाई स्कूल, मालदा टाउन हाई स्कूल, मालदा जिला स्कूल, मालदा मेडिकल कॉलेज और अस्पताल, गौर बंगा विश्वविद्यालय, मालदा पॉलिटेक्निक, रतुआ सत्येंद्र नाथ बोस सरकारी पॉलिटेक्निक, मालदा कॉलेज, मालदा महिला कॉलेज इत्यादि जिले के कुछ बेहतरीन एजुकेशनल इंस्टीटूट्स हैं।

परिवहन
NH 12 शहर से होकर गुजरता है। गौर कन्या बस टर्मिनस उत्तर बंगाल राज्य परिवहन निगम द्वारा संचालित निजी बसों और सरकारी बस सेवा दोनों के लिए बस डिपो के रूप में कार्य करता है। चार रेलवे स्टेशन हैं जो महानगरीय शहर की सेवा करते हैं। मालदा टाउन रेलवे स्टेशन अंग्रेजी बाजार क्षेत्र में कार्य करता है; पुराना मालदा जंक्शन रेलवे स्टेशन पुराने मालदा क्षेत्र में कार्य करता है; मालदा कोर्ट रेलवे स्टेशन मंगलबाड़ी और नालदुबी क्षेत्र में कार्य करता है, और गौर मालदा रेलवे स्टेशन महादीपुर गौर क्षेत्र में कार्य करता है। निकटतम हवाई अड्डा कोलकाता में है।

It lies 347 km (215 miles) north of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Mango, jute and silk are the most notable products of this district. The special variety of mango, Fazli, produced in this region is popularly known by the name of the district and is exported across the world and internationally acclaimed.
