Houston may not be well known for its hiking trails - but there are plenty of beautiful spots to choose from.

One of my favorite things about the Houston area is how diverse the landscape is. Within just a few minutes’ drive (you’re going to need a car around here), you can find yourself in a pine forest, next to a bayou, or even in a sandy beach area. This variety makes it easy to find a trail that’s perfect for any mood or activity level.

Houston may be a large and bustling city, but it also offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy some stunning hikes. From the urban trails near downtown to more remote areas in the outskirts of town, there is something for everyone when it comes to hiking in Houston.

Day Trip to Seguin ???????? (FULL EPISODE) S10 E12

Seguin has been around since the dawn of Texas, but that doesn't mean this place is outdated. Actually -- it's full of fresh adventures and spots you'd never expect to find. From classic haunts to renovated historic buildings, this place is anything but ordinary.

This town has quite some nutty history. To honor Seguin’s long legacy of pecans, they built the world’s largest pecan statue in 1962 (5 feet tall) on the courthouse lawn. Then in 2002, John Pape decided to up the ante and build an even larger pecan statue (11 feet tall) outside of Pape Pecan house. Little did he know, Brunswick, MO, had already beat them out for the world’s largest pecan with an even larger statue. Finally in 2010, Seguin reclaimed the title (for now) with the 16-foot monster outside the Texas Agricultural Center.

Seguin is also home to the World’s Largest Nutcracker Collection. Head on to Pape Pecan House to peruse the collection of over eight thousand crackers from all around the world including characters like Darth Vader, figurines like the presidents and even some you’ve never even seen before.

This home is a historic wonder. Not only is it made entirely of “limecrete” (a form of early concrete), but it is built in the Greek Revival style and has a special way of storing water on the roof. It’s definitley worth a visit — especially to see the special exhibit on freed slaves who made a huge difference in history.

As one of the oldest cities in Texas, it should come as no surprise that Seguin has it’s fair share of ghost stories — most of which are at this 1844 hotel. Take a tour using fancy ghost hunting tools to see if you can meet all 13 of the spirits haunting this old building. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you’re in for a truly good scare.

Guero’s Backyard is like an upscale neighborhood block party — except instead of burnt hamburgers and cold hotdogs, they’re serving up some of the best fusion street tacos you’ve ever eaten. Filled with fresh ingredients like sesame crusted ahi tuna, seared flank steak and collard greens, and they’re unlike anything you’ve tasted before.

Sitting on Texas’s own version of Niagra Falls is an old power plant that’s been converted to a comfort food cafe with an electric atmosphere. I highly suggest the Chicken Fried Steak smothered in Queso because, well, you can’t get anymore Texan than that.

Who would’ve thought that the perfect island getaway would be smack in the middle of Texas? Sons island is a tropical paradise and natural island miles away from the nearest ocean, full of cabanas, hammocks, water fun and island vibes!

It is 83 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Houston and 87 miles (140 km) east northeast of Austin. College Station is home to the main campus of Texas A&M University, the flagship institution of the Texas A&M University System. The city owes both its name and existence to the university's location along a railroad. Texas A&M's triple designation as a Land-, Sea-, and Space-Grant institution reflects the broad scope of the research endeavors it brings to the city, with ongoing projects funded by agencies such as NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research.

Day Trip to Crockett ???? (FULL EPISODE) S10 E3

Behind the towering green veil of the Pine Curtain, time slows down in the Hub of Houston County, and if you take the time to slow down too...well I think you'll like what you find.

You’re probably wondering how this town is connected to the Texas hero, Davy Crockett, and this spring in Brewer Park is the place to find out. Back in the 1800s, Davy stopped in town to visit a friend, and on his way he stopped at this very spring to get a drink of water. Historic! And thus the town was renamed…

Visit this site that was once a bustling village of native Caddo Indians, living in little grass houses just like the one recreated by Caddo Indians. Fun Fact: the word “Texas” came from the Caddo Indians word for “welcome.”

This mission reconstructed by the CCC is a loose representation of the Mission San Francisco de Tejas, the first Spanish mission in Texas established in 1690. The original mission was only in the area for 4 years before it was relocated to San Antonio as Mission Esperada.

The best place to dive into the music history of this town is at this little joint where Lightning Hopkins used to play for tips before he struck it big as a blues artist. Stop in for a show, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see owner Pip Gillette do some pickin’ on the banjo and play the rib bones.

In town, you’ll find the ruins of Mary Allen College, the first women’s college for African Americans in the state. It’s a cool sight, and an even cooler significant moment in Texas history.

At first glance, this place doesn’t look like much, but it’s a local favorite. Owned by the mayor, this cafe is decorated with tons of (you guessed it!) Moose heads and serves up a mean patty melt. Don’t forget to order the fried pickles, too!

For a down home atmosphere and a family-potluck-style buffet, look no further than Rosemary’s. Each day is a new special, but you can bet it’ll be finger-licking — especially when you wash it down with a homemade pie for dessert!

This hiking trail might just be one of the most significant in Texas. Also called the “King’s Highway” or the “Old San Antonio Road” this is the pathway taken by all the Texas heroes (we’re talking Austin, Bowie, Crockett) that once led from Louisiana to Mexico. This is the only remaining section and it’s a pretty awesome hike!

One of the biggest nearby attractions is the Davy Crockett National Forest, which is 160,000 acres of incredibly beautiful East Texas nature. Spend some time wandering through the towering pines or paddling the Four C National Recreational Trail.

Ft. Parker State Park @ on the Navasota River. RV camping fishing hunting hiking biking

Fort Parker State Park is a Texas state park near Mexia and to Limestone County seat Groesbeck, Texas. The city of Mexia and three local landowners donated the land creating the park in 1935. From 1935 to 1942, Civilian Conservation Corps Company 3807 built roads, recreational facilities, the concession building and a 423-foot dam of limestone, concrete, and soil across the Navasota River, creating Lake Fort Parker. The park was dedicated by former Texas Governor Pat Neff and opened to the public in May 1941. Old Fort Parker, their spring is located on the left
Fort Parker State Park has three hike-and-bike trails: Springfield trail (1.5-mile loop), Navasota River Trail (0.5 mile one way), and Baines Creek Trail (2.5 miles one way). The Bur Oak Trail (0.5-mile loop) is a nature trail with an interpretive guide pamphlet available. Trees in the park include bur oak, water oak, blackjack oak, pecan, and eastern red cedar (juniper). Other plants that can be found are American beauty berry and sumac.
Inside the park is the Old Springfield Cemetery, all that remains of the once-thriving community of Springfield, Texas. Springfield was once the county seat of Limestone County and thrived during the 1840's and 1850's, but as men left for the Civil War, the town's businesses began to close. After the war, racial conflict and lawlessness occurred. The railroad passed Springfield by for the towns of Mexia and Groesbeck, and the town of Springfield disappeared. The Fort Parker Nature Center is open every weekend. Canoe, kayaks, and paddle boats are available for rental. Day use, overnight camping, group barracks, an activity center, and a picnic pavilion are all available for rent. The C.C.C. Company also rebuilt nearby Old Fort Parker, the site of the Fort Parker massacre, for the Texas Centennial observance in 1936. As an independent nonprofit, Old Fort Parker is not part of the state park.

Things to Do:

Enjoy swimming, fishing, hiking and biking, camping, picnicking, bird and nature watching, paddling and geocaching. Host your group gatherings here, as well. Fort Parker offers some of the best sunsets in Central Texas, so bring your camera!

Hiking and biking
Explore seven miles of trails on foot or bike. Learn about the plants in the park along the .6-mile Bur Oak Trail.

See many park highlights along the two-mile Springfield Trail: the Springfield Cemetery, the Navasota River Springs that feed the river, the dam built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and spring-fed Lake Springfield.

Fishing
Drop a hook in 750-acre Fort Parker Lake, three-acre Lake Springfield, or the Navasota River. Catch channel and blue catfish, white and black bass, and crappie.

No fishing license is needed to fish from shore on our lakes or the river, or from a boat on the lake. You will need a license to fish from a boat on the river.

We have two boat ramps (one on the river and one on Fort Parker Lake), two fishing piers and a fish cleaning station. We loan fishing gear for use in the park.

Get detailed fishing and lake information for Fort Parker Lake.

Paddling
Paddle Fort Parker Lake and the Navasota River by canoe or kayak. Take the 5.3-mile Limestone Bluffs Paddling Trail to experience both.

Bring your own or rent one of our watercraft (weather permitting).

If you are planning to rent our watercraft for a youth group, please fill out the youth group compliance form and bring a signed parental consent form for each minor.

Camping
Stay overnight at a campsite, screened shelter or cabin. Cabins don’t have beds or bathrooms but do have air-conditioning. Sites are scattered around the lake’s edge, and most are near a restroom with showers.

Group gatherings
Rent one of our group sites for your next reunion or summer camp out. The barracks complex has a dining hall, game room and dorms; it sleeps 86 people. We also have a recreation hall, pavilion and primitive group camp.

CCC
Men of the Civilian Conservation Corps built Fort Parker State Park. They constructed the dam that formed Fort Parker Lake and the buildings and roads in the park. Learn more on The Look of Nature: Fort Parker State Park.
