Above 5000 birds of various species from different part of the world used to come here once upon a time for propagation every year. But now there are no birds but ruins of most famous bird sanctuary of Karnataka in Mandagadde, Shivamogga.
Once, one of the widely visited bird sanctuaries in India is in verge of extinction. The quaint little island is also graced by the presence of various other varieties, such as the Maiden Egret, Pied Kingfisher, Wooly Neck Stalk, Night Herons, Open-billed storks etc
However, there are no birds found the place is losing its charm as less tourists showing interest to visit the place.

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary
Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary is located at a distance of 30 km from Shimoga on the way to Theerthahalli from Shimoga. Though Mandagadde Bird sanctuary is not considered one of the biggest of the bird sanctuaries of Karnataka, it is a habitat for a variety of birds.
Mandagadde bird sanctuary is one of the few bird sanctuaries in the Malnad region which is spread about 1.14 acres and surrounded by dense forest. This picnic spot houses some of the spectacular migratory birds.
A small island is formed by the flowing river Tunga, and the dense of trees on the island provide shelter for immigrating birds. The birds like Median Egret, Little Cormonant, darter or snake-bird etc., comes from different parts of the world during May for breeding. The breeding cycle will be completed by October and the migrated birds return home with their young ones.
Best season to visit Mandagadde bird sanctuary is between July and September. During the peak season (August), it is estimated that more than Five thousand birds visit this sanctuary.

1. Gondi Anicut:
Located at about 14.50 km downstream of the Bhadra Dam, is built across the Bhadra River near Gondi Village, 11.56 km from Bhadravati Town, Shivamogga district. The Culturable Command Area (CCA) of the Gondi System is about 4,600 ha.
2. Honne Godda:
About 10 kms from Bhadravati is Honne Gudda, a hillock about 304.8 metres high which has a small temple. From this hillock, a panoramic view of the Bhadra River and its surrounding areas can be got. Its an ideal picnic spot.

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary (Karnataka)
From Sakrabyle Elephant Camp we went to Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary which is about 15 kms from Gajnur and 30 kms from Shimoga. It is a huge area of forest and an island in the river Tunga. There are large numbers of white birds (5-10 thousand) in this island. There is a watchtower to climb and watch the birds from a hight. It is a good place for bird and nature lovers.
