Explore Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania and Wyoming Valley

Exploring Wilkes Barre takes us on a tour of my home city. The Wyoming Valley is at the heart of Pennsylvania where many cities lead back to Wilkes Barre. This was ground zero for anthracite coal, which was transported to almost every city in PA to build the foundations of the industrial age. In this tour we explore the best of Wilkes Barre on this foggy winter day and reflect on the many festivals of the diamond city, starting with the Public Square, then the River Commons, Kirby Park, the Stegmaier and Lions Head Brewery, and close our adventure in Seven Tubs Nature Area. I'll see you on tour!

[EDIT] IN THE CHAPTER RIVER COMMONS, I SPEAK ABOUT HURRICANE LEE TAKING PLACE IN 2012. HURRICANE LEE OCCURRED IN FALL OF 2011.

Bridgeville to Laurel, Delaware, USA

Bridgeville is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bridgeville was named for a bridge that was built in 1730 that was located over a tributary of the Nanticoke River. The Bridgeville Historic District, Bridgeville Public Library, Eratt House, Old Bridgeville Fire House, Ricards House-Linden Hall, Scott's Store, Sudler House, and Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Laurel is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. Laurel is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. It once hosted the Laurel Blue Hens of the Eastern Shore Baseball League. The site of the town of Laurel was a Nanticoke Indian settlement known as Broad Creek Town during most of the eighteenth century. The Indian settlement was created on tracts known as Bachelor's Delight and Greenland in 1711 when the government of Maryland, who originally claimed this part of Delaware, set aside land for the Nanticoke Indians. Nearly all the Indian settlers left within 50 years, relocating to western Pennsylvania. The present town was laid out along the Broad Creek in the 1790s and was named for the laurel bushes that grew alongside the creek.

Nanticoke, Pennsylvania - Concrete City (2021)

The Concrete City was an early example of International Style architecture in the United States, built as company housing in 1911 for select employees of the Delaware, Lackawana and Western Railroad's coal division in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. It was eventually taken over by the Glen Alden Coal Company who, uninterested in paying for required improvements and unable to demolish it due to its robust construction, abandoned the property in 1924. It stands to this day, albeit in extreme disrepair. Currently, the site is commonly used by military, police, firefighters, airsoft military-simulation events and recreational paintball players for staged games.

In 1998, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission declared Concrete City a historic site.

Nanticoke is a city in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,465, making it the third largest city in Luzerne County. It occupies 3.5 square miles of land. The city can be divided into several sections: Honey Pot (northwestern Nanticoke), (northern and central Nanticoke), and Hanover Section (southeastern Nanticoke). It was once an active coal mining community.

Nanticoke City has its own police department and fire department. The police department provides full-time protection for its citizens, visitors, businesses, and public property. The fire department consists of a combination of career and volunteer firefighters. It provides a variety of services, including fire extinguishment, rescue, and emergency medical services. The department also provides its citizens with fire safety education and prevention programs.

Larksville, Pennsylvania, USA

Larksville is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is 2 miles (3 km) west of Wilkes Barre on the Susquehanna River (along U.S. Route 11). Larksville was formed from a section of Plymouth Township; it was incorporated as a borough on November 10, 1909. Once known as Blindtown, the community's name was changed to Larksville in honor of Peggy Lark, a former resident. The borough gained prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an active anthracite coal mining community, drawing a large portion of its labor force from European immigrants. Larksville was a thriving mining town. Houses were clustered around the collieries. The collieries in the borough were Boston, Loree, Lance, Woodward, and Number 4. At its peak, in 1920, Larksville's population was well over 9,000 people. However, the mining industry in the region collapsed after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster. The population began to dwindle after its demise. Today, the population is just over 4,000.
