Visiting Nakatsugawa & The Nakasendo Trail in Japan
In this video we're in the stunning mountain town of Nakatsugawa in Japan. This little-visited part of the country is a real hidden treasure and is now one of our favourite places in all of Japan.
Nakatsugawa is a post town along the Nakasendo Trail which links Tokyo with Kyoto. Historically, this was an ancient trade route which was frequented by merchants and samurai warriors.
Today it's one of the most scenic and historical walkways in Japan and is one of the few places in the country where you can easily and independently plan a multi-day trek, staying in beautiful villages and guest houses along the way.
In this video we'll share not only the Nakasendo Way, but the awesome things to do in Nakatsugawa and around.

A short video of my historical walking tour in Magome Juku which can be reached from Nakatsugawa Station by bus.
Magome-juku (馬籠宿, Magome-juku) was the forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō, an ancient road that connected Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the Edo period. It was also the last of eleven stations along the Kisoji, which was the precursor to a part of the Nakasendō, running through the Kiso Valley.

When you're visiting Nakatsugawa City in East Gifu, make sure you stop by to see the Naegi Castle Ruins. The ruins of the Naegi Castle fortress are atop Mount Takamori. Manmade stone walls were piled on top of huge naturally-occurring boulders, giving the castle a unique structure and appearance.
The gently sloping path makes it easy for anyone to walk to the summit and enjoy the surrounding scenery. A wooden observatory provides you with a 360º panoramic view of one of Gifu Prefecture's most majestic rivers, the Kiso River below, and the famous Mount Ena in the distance.

For more than 250 years the Daimyo Feudal Lords made the arduous journey over the mountains and along the valleys to report to the Shogun on the state affairs of their domains. Today many parts of the Nakasendo have been swallowed up by urban fabric of the modern towns along the old route. The Ryujin Falls in Nakatsugawa, Gifu, are one of the 50 Famous Waters of Gifu Prefecture. The name Ryujin, which means “Dragon God,” was given to the waterfall because a Dragon God legend has been handed down that says on a certain day a white dragon appeared before the villagers, then rose up to the heavens. The extremely clear water of the powerful falls drops twelve meters and is said to change color seven times a day, exhibiting shades of cobalt blue and emerald blue, among others. Five other waterfalls are located around the Ryujin Falls, one of which, the Borin Falls, is also associated with the legend of the Dragon God. It is said that when rising to the heavens, the dragon collided with the mountain slope, causing him to lose many of his scales, which then became the waterfall.
