Initially built using stone walls in 1575 by feudal lord Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nagahama Castle was destroyed in 1615. The town used to be called Imahama, but was renamed to Nagahama, after Hideyoshi’s lord Nobunaga. There used to be a port, where ships could enter the castle directly. Though demolished, parts of the original castle walls and moat structures were used in the construction of the nearby Hikone Castle and Daitsuji Temple. Only a stone wall and well remained from the ruins. Now designated as a national historic site, an imitation of Nagahama Castle was rebuilt in 1983 using concrete.
Located on the east side of Japan’s biggest lake, Lake Biwa, beautiful cherry blossom trees surround the castle. At the entrance, there are the unique souvenirs for sale. Jigsaw puzzles, postcards, key chains, photo frames, books, cloth bags, and even a model of the castle itself. Brochures and leaflets on the castle as well as Nagahama City are useful for planning the day’s itinerary.
On the second and third floor of the castle, the History Museum features permanent exhibits relating to Hideyoshi Toyotomi and the history of Nagahama City. Every one to two months, the temporary exhibits are changed. Topics relating to Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the area’s culture, the battle of Shigatake in 1583, life during the Sengoku Period (a period in Japanese history marked by social upheaval and military conflict), and more are displayed in great detail. Although all of it is in Japanese, the exhibits are pretty and attractive, and worth taking the time to admire.
Many people head straight up to the fifth floor, the top most accessible part of the castle. At a height of 30 meters above sea level, sweeping views of the vastness of Lake Biwa can be appreciated from the top. The area below is a large park, and a top-down view from the castle is amazing especially during the cherry blossom period

If you're in Shiga during spring, one of the prefecture's best destinations for cherry blossoms is at Hokoen Park, built on the site of the former Nagahama Castle ruins. The grounds here are filled with around 600 Somei Yoshino sakura trees, and they have been designated as one of Japan's Top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots. If you want a unique vantage point out over the beautiful blooms, head up to the observation area at the Nagahama Castle Historical Museum to appreciate them from above.
Typically, the best time to catch the trees at their best here is from the early to mid April period.
Admission to the park area itself is free, but there is a fee of 410 yen if you want to enjoy the view from above at the Nagahama Castle Historical Museum.

Hokoen Park can be accessed in around eight minutes on foot from Nagahama Station, served by the JR Biwako Line.

【4K】Relaxing Walk in Japanese Small Town - Nagahama, Ehime
I took this video on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.
This town, Nagahama, is in the western part of Ehime Prefecture, Japan.
Spread out along the estuary, the town prospered as a collection point for wax and lumber brought down the river.
For this reason, the Nagahama Ohashi Bridge, which was built on the outskirts of the town in 1935, is a retractable bridge so that large cargo ships can pass through.
This bridge is the oldest active movable bridge in Japan and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

◎It is about a 7-minute walk from Izutaga Station, but it may be quite difficult with small children because of the steep hill and stairs at the station. Also, the return trip is uphill, which requires time and energy. It would be nice to be able to purchase ice cream and drinks at the store located at the top of the hill!

Ozu Nagahama Bridge - Ehime - 長浜大橋 - 4K Ultra HD
Nagahama has grown to be a pivotal port town which has connected sea and river freight transport since the Edo feudal period.
Nagahama Ohashi (bridge) was constructed as a part of a public works project to connect the Prefectural Road from Nagahama to the Kawanoishi (Yawatahama City) Line and Nagahama to the Gunchu (Iyo City) Line to help boost the economy.
The bridge was designed by Jun Masuda, who was considered to be a pioneer bridge-building consultant.
With total construction costs of approximately 280,000 yen, (modern equivalent of approximately 2 billion yen), the bridge was completed in August, Showa 10 (1935) using the latest construction techniques.
Hijikawa Arashi Storm.
Hijikawa Arashi is a cold foggy wind which occurs between fall and winter at night and early mornings around the mouth of the Hijikawa River in Nagahama, Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture. On some sunny mornings, strong cold air is created in the upper stream of the Hijikawa River in the Ozu Bonchi Basin and it blows along the river, accompanied by fog. It looks as if a swift current is flowing out of a foggy lake, swallowing the town with roaring sounds. The spectacular scene of foggy wind blowing into the sea often reminds people of the wonder of nature.

Nagahama a évolué en une ville portuaire statégique de par sa connexion fluviale et maritime lui assurant son transport de fret depuis l’ère Edo.
Nagahama Ohashi (le pont) fut construit en tant que partie d’un projet public afin de connecter la voie préfectorale de la ligne Nagahama - Kawanoishi (Yamatahama City) et de la ligne Nagahama - Gunchu (Iyo City) pour ainsi favoriser l’essor économique qui en découle. Le pont a été imaginé par Jun Masuda, qui était considéré comme un pionnier dans l’expertise de la construction de ponts.
Avec un coût de construction total de 280 000 Yen, (l’équivalence moderne vaut de nos jours environ 2 milliards de Yen), le pont fut achevé en Août, Showa 10 (1935) et bénéficie des dernières techniques de construction.
La tempête Hijikawa Arashi.
Hijikawa Arashi est un vent froid et brumeux qui se lève entre l’automne et l’hiver, de nuit ou très tôt le matin, autour de la bouche du fleuve Hijikawa à Nagahama, Ozu City, dans la préfecture d’Ehime. Lors de certaines matinées ensoleillées, un air froid et puissant est créé dans le courant supérieur du fleuve Hijikawa dans le bassin d’Ozu Bonchi, et est soufflé tout le long du fleuve, accompagné par un brouillard. Cet événement donne le sentiment qu’un courant rapide s’échappe d’un lac brumeux, avalant la ville avec des bruits de rugissement. La scène spectaculaire de ce vent brumeux s’engouffrant dans la mer est un véritable témoignage de la beauté de la nature.
