What are the don'ts of visiting Edinburgh, Scotland? Visit Edinburgh, a city that is a treasure trove of history and culture and is well worth the trip. The fact that it is so unique, though, also means that there are many chances for you to make a fool of yourself while going about it.
When traveling to Edinburgh, following are some of the most typical errors that tourists make. But don’t worry! The worst thing that may happen to you as a result of making any of these blunders is catching a cold and perhaps getting some funny stares from the locals. However, being well-prepared will not only make your trip to the Scottish capital more pleasurable but can also save you a little bit of money and clear up some of the misunderstanding you may encounter there.
1. Putting in an order for a single malt whiskey served over ice
Or even worse, with a Coca-Cola
It is easy to see why Scots are so proud of their whiskey. A complicated beverage that is as refined as any French wine has been crafted by using generations' worth of experience and years' worth of maturing. If you ask for your single malt to be served on the rocks, a knowledgeable bartender will highly recommend that you drink it neat first (the way it was intended to be served), and if required, add a few drops of water to your glass. Those with less discernment will put the ice in the glass, but they will be evaluating you while they do so. If you spoil the flavor of a perfectly nice dram by adding Coke to it, the grading will be that much more rigorous.
2. You shouldn't just drink whiskey all the time.
During your time in Edinburgh, you should definitely have a few drams of the water of life, but save the distillery tours for when you're in the Highlands and Islands. Gin is big in Edinburgh: It is reported that the city has the highest per capita consumption of gin in the whole United Kingdom. You may take a tour of the Edinburgh Gin distillery, and then go to the Heads & Tales pub for a drink afterward. Similarly, in the Summerhall arts theatre's Dick's Bar, you can have Pickering's Gin, which is produced in the building next door, straight from the tap. The 56 North gin stockpile is the most extensive in all of Scotland, including more than 170 individual bottles.
3. Ignoring the raincoat
Even during the warmest months of the year, the weather in Scotland is famously unpredictable. It's been stated that whether the sky is clear or overcast, you shouldn't put too much stock in either one since you never know what the weather may bring. Even if you want to travel to Edinburgh in the middle of the summer, you should still bring a decent raincoat that is waterproof with you. Otherwise, you run the risk of being soaked. It is not worth your time to make an effort to control the situation using an umbrella since it will not hold up for long in the often-strong gusts.

Alyth is a town in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, situated under the Hill of Alyth five miles northeast of Blairgowrie. In 2001 the town had a population of 2,963. The settlement of New Alyth lies on the A926 road southwest of the main village. Alyth has a primary school that has around 497 pupils. Alyth High School catered for pupils up to fourth year until it was closed in 1994, when all pupils were moved to Blairgowrie High School or Webster's High School situated in nearby Kirriemuir.
Alyth is located on a burn which bears its name and owes its position to a confluence of drovers' roads used by hill farmers to bring their sheep and cattle down to market. A picturesque 17th century packhorse bridge is among a number of stone bridges crossing the burn in the town. The ruins of the old church, known locally as The Arches, stand in a graveyard in a prominent position at the top of the town. The current church building, completed in 1839 to the design of Edinburgh architect, Thomas Hamilton, dominates the skyline of the town.
It is Gothic in style, with Romanesque influences, especially in the windows, and has an unusually high spire. Inside the church is the funerary hatchment of Sir George Ramsay (sixth baronet of Bamff) who was killed in a duel at Musselburgh, in April 1790 - one of the last duelling deaths in Scotland. In the church porch is preserved a late 7th-early 8th century Pictish cross-slab, with a decorated cross on one face and a single Pictish symbol ('double disc and Z-rod') on the other. It was discovered in Alyth in 1887 when ground was being levelled in front of the manse.
To the northeast of the town a hill fort, possibly of Pictish date, stands atop Barry (or 'barrow') Hill. The remains consist of massive collapsed stone ramparts that take advantage of the topography of the Alyth Hill. Local legend connects the fort with King Arthur, and it is claimed that Guinevere, Arthur's queen, was imprisoned here for a very short time.
Another nearby early medieval feature is a Pictish 'Class I' symbol stone in a field on Bruceton Farm somewhat to the east of Alyth. This slab is one of relatively few likely still to be in its original position. It may have marked an ancient burial.
There may have been a Christian presence in this area from early times, since the medieval parish church was dedicated to St. Moluag of Lismore (d. 592), a contemporary of St. Columba. The cross-slab mentioned above also suggests this. Alyth was granted a Charter by James III in 1488, raising Alyth to the rank of Burgh of Barony with the right to hold markets and fairs.

Places to see in ( Musselburgh - UK )
Musselburgh is the largest settlement in East Lothian, Scotland, on the coast of the Firth of Forth, 6 miles east of Edinburgh city centre. The name Musselburgh is Old English in origin, with mussel referring to the shellfish, and burgh derived from the Old English for town.
Musselburgh was first settled by the Romans in the years following their invasion of Scotland in AD 80. They built a fort a little inland from the mouth of the River Esk, at Inveresk. They bridged the Esk downstream from the fort, and thus established the line of the main eastern approach to Scotland's capital for most of the next 2,000 years. The bridge built by the Romans outlasted them by many centuries. It was rebuilt on the original Roman foundations some time before 1300, and in 1597 it was rebuilt again, this time with a third arch added on the east side of the river. The Old Bridge is also known as the Roman Bridge and remains in use today by pedestrians. To its north is the New Bridge, designed by John Rennie the Elder and built in 1806. This in turn was considerably widened in 1925. The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh was fought south of Musselburgh.
Musselburgh is known as The Honest Toun, and celebrates this by the annual election of the Honest Lad and Lass. The town motto Honestas dates back to 1332, when the Regent of Scotland, Randolph, Earl of Moray, died in the burgh after a long illness during which he was devotedly cared for by the townsfolk. His successor offered to reward the people for their loyalty but they declined, saying they were only doing their duty. The new regent, the Earl of Mar, was impressed and said they were a set of honest men, hence Honest Toun.
The town and its population grew considerably throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, with major local authority and private housing developments on both the eastern and western outskirts. Before 1975, Musselburgh was part of Midlothian, not East Lothian. It became part of the East Lothian District following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and subsequently East Lothian unitary council area in 1996.
Musselburgh is served by two railway stations. Musselburgh railway station is in the west of the town, adjacent to Queen Margaret University and has regular Abellio ScotRail services from Edinburgh Waverley to North Berwick. It is a relatively new station, having opened in 1988. The other station serving the town is Wallyford railway station to the east of the town in the village of Wallyford, which opened in 1994. The town's original station was close to the town centre at the end of a short branch from Newhailes Junction. Passenger services from there ceased in 1964, and the line closed to all traffic in the early-1970s. The former railway line is now a road bypassing the Fisherrow area of the town.

Exploring Newhailes House & Gardens, Musselburgh, Edinburgh | Christmas Market, Stables Cafe & Walks
Happy New Year everyone, I hope it's a good one for you all. Hope you enjoy this walk around Newhailes House & Gardens, which is located in Musselburgh, on the outskirts of Edinburgh. When I visited, close to the shortest day, there was a lovely Christmas Market and, although it got dark early, I still thoroughly enjoyed my walk in the extensive grounds. Newhailes House was built around 1686 and is a great example of a country-style Palladian Mansion. The house was home to the Dalrymple family for almost 300 years until it was taken over by the National Trust for Scotland. The estate extends to around 80 acres and has lots of great walks with good views over the Firth of Forth. There's a good car park (small fee) and entry is free. The Stables Cafe offers lots of tasty food and is the ideal place to grab a coffee n' cake and enjoy a leisurely walk around the grounds.

Edinburgh Coast Cycle | Cycling in Edinburgh, Scotland | Routes through the city Easy Coastline 2022
A great cycle route for cyclists of any age or ability. Almost all flat, the route takes you from one side of Edinburgh to the other along it's coastline with the Forth Estuary.
We go from Cramond Beach Car Park all the way to Musselburgh Beach on a route that is just over 16km and can be done in an hour at a leisurely pace. There are may places along the route to stop for refreshments or to enjoy the view.
Along the way you'll pass Silverknowes Beach, Granton Beach, Leith and Portobello Beach.

The village is overlooked by Ecton Hill, which has probably been mined for copper and lead since the sixteenth century. It was leased by the owner the Duke of Devonshire until, in 1760, the fourth duke decided to work it on his own account. Within fifty years, it became the richest individual copper mine in England producing over sixty thousands tons of ore.
