Best known for its famous Oktoberfest and World War II history, Germany is also home to some of Europa’s most beautiful scenery, fairytale castles, important historic sites and lively party scenes. Located in the heart of Europe, Germany maintains the continent’s most powerful economy.
Our visit to the city of Münster in Germany
A quick look at a historic city, in the northwest of Germany, in the Westphalia region, that is full of charm & culture.
Our walking tour is a look at the highlights of Münster from the Rathaus with its Hall of Peace (Friedenssaal), across to 13th-century Münster Dom, also known as St. Paulus Cathedral, with its 16th-century Astronomical Clock that we can hear chiming. A short stroll before we reach the Überwasserkirche, and the streets that double as the set of the popular German TV detective series “Wilsberg”.
We then explore the lanes of Kreuzstraße with its many bars before heading back to St Lamberti Church, and discover more of the city including stunning views from café “1648” before checking out the exquisite interior of Clemenskirche.
We then return to Prinzipalmarkt and onto the Carillon (glockenspiel) on Nonhoff House. Then we touch on the places of interest you will want to visit if you are staying in Münster, such as the LWL - Museum for Art and Culture, Stadtmuseum Münster and the Pablo Picasso museum.
We end up our visit with the Tower Keeper of Münster and climbing the 300 steps of St Lamberti Church, but it was well worth it.

Münster is a city in western Germany. It’s known for the 13th-century St. Paulus Dom cathedral, built in the Gothic and Romanesque styles. Prinzipalmarkt square is framed by gabled houses, the Gothic city hall and late medieval St. Lamberti Church. The gardens of baroque Schloss Münster palace include greenhouses of the Botanical Garden. The Pablo Picasso Art Museum features a collection of the painter’s lithographs.
There are some 500,000 bicycles in Münster – and that's just one example of the exuberance found in this captivating city, one of the most appealing between Cologne and Hamburg. It's historical centre was rebuilt after WWII and features many architectural gems. Yet Münster is not mired in nostalgia. Its 50,000 students keep the cobwebs out and civic pride is great – the town's main cultural treasures have enjoyed ambitious renovations and enhancements. Sampling the slew of lively pubs and restaurants alone warrants at least an overnight stop here.
A historic university city, Münster is the capital of Westphalia and has a skyline shaped by the Romanesque and Gothic towers of its medieval churches. For hundreds of years up to 1801 the city was ruled by a Catholic Prince-Bishopric. This dominion was only briefly interrupted by an Anabaptist rebellion, which was crushed in brutal fashion by a siege and grisly execution of its leaders who were left to rot in cages over the Prinzipalmarkt square.
The Old Town suffered during the Second World War, but its limestone Renaissance and Gothic facades were meticulously reconstructed afterwards. Many of these buildings resonate with world-changing history, like the Historical City Hall where the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648, redrawing the map of Western Europe.
Münster is situated on the river Aa, approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) south of its confluence with the Ems in the Westphalian Bight, a landscape studded with dispersed settlements and farms, the so-called Münsterland. The Wolstonian sediments of the mountain ridge called Münsterländer Kiessandzug cross the city from north to south. The highest elevation is the Mühlenberg in the northwest of Münster, 97 metres above sea level. The lowest elevation is at the Ems with 44 m above sea level. The city centre is 60 m above sea level, measured at the Prinzipalmarkt in front of the historic city hall.

Top 10 CITIES Switzerland: Most beautiful Swiss Places – The Highlights [Travel Guide]
Switzerland is full of beautiful cities! They are urban, vibrant and very happening. Although Switzerland is a small country, the diversity among the cities is very noticeable. The architecture, the art and the culture differ a lot from city to city. You will find the cities of Switzerland by the river, lake or even in the valleys. Each city has its unique appearance as well as its hotspots and attractions of where to go to.
Sion is the capital of the very touristy canton of Valais (Wallis). Interestingly, Sion is only little known but ranks easily among the most beautiful cities of Switzerland. Sion feels like being in Italy but is a French-speaking city. Sion is vibrant, full of street art and also a foodie hub. The most remarkable however are the two castles up on the hills. Lugano is the largest city of Ticino in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Lugano lays by the lake, surrounded by the Swiss Alps, and one can feel that Italy is quite near. Lugano charms with its many alleys, culture, lake promenade and its view points. The best view over the surrounding and the city of Lugano you can get at the Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore. Basel is the hub for the pharmaceutical industry. Basel is an old city and full of culture. It’s important to explore the many alleys with their colorful houses, see the red city hall, the minster and cross the bridges. Basel has a strong connection to its traditions. Important to mention here are the Vogelgryff and the Morgestraich. Bern is the federal city (capital) of Switzerland and the only town that is considered UNESCO world heritage. Very typical for Bern are the many arcades and the fountains. Bern’s old city is really a highlight, thus make sure to spend here at least half a day. Neuchâtel is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, a town that feels Mediterranean and sort of French/Italian. The highlight of Neuchâtel are the lake promenade, the graffiti alley and the collegiate church with the castle. Schaffhausen is probably the largest and best preserved old city in Switzerland. Schaffhausen’s old town charms with its colorful houses and oriel windows (balcony windows). Schaffhausen is easy to explore by walk it’s pretty much car-free. The best things to do in and around Schaffhausen are a visit to the Museum zu Allerheiligen, walking at the Vordergasse alley, going up to the Munot and seeing the nearby Rhinefalls. The Munot is a centre for culture and hosts various events. Zurich is the largest city in all of Switzerland. It’s the hub for innovation and business but at the same time is a very touristy destination. Zurich’s old city concentrates around the Limmat quay. Walk along the river Limmat, enter the many protestant churches or head up to the Lindenhof and Polyterrase to enjoy a great vista over the old city of Zurich. Zurich is modern but also very cultural; the major event being the Sechseläuten festival. Fribourg is a city on two levels. The old city of perfectly preserved and thus great to explore. Ascend the church tower of the St. Nicolas cathedral or the Loretta chapel to enjoy a brilliant vista. Fribourg city has also some similarities with Luxemburg. Solothurn is the most beautiful baroque city of Switzerland. The old town is full of beautiful houses and concentrates around the river Aare. The major landmark is the St. Urseren Cathedral that offers you a great view from its tower. Lucerne is no doubt the most beautiful of the Top 10 Swiss Cities. Lucerne has been a favorite for many tourists since it offers so many great things such as a charming river promenade along the Reuss, a great view over Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and the Swiss Alps and otherwise seems very inviting with its alleys and painted houses. Lucerne’s best attractions are the Jesuitenkirche, Gletschergarten museum and many more. Explore Lucerne on the water by taking a boat ride or head up to Mount Pilatus to get a perfect vista over the Swiss Alps and this old city.

What to see in one day in Münster?
•The Prinzipalmarkt is the historic principal marketplace of Münster, Germany. It is shaped by historic buildings with picturesque pediments attached to one another. It extends from St. Lambert's Church (Lambertikirche) in the north to the Townhouse Tower (Stadthausturm) in the south and is home to luxurious shops and cafés. The centre of the eastern side, opposite the south-eastern entrance to Cathedral Square (Domplatz), is dominated by the Historical City Hall of Münster.
•St Lambert's Church (German: St. Lamberti) is a Roman Catholic church building in Münster (Westphalia) in Germany, dedicated to Lambert of Maastricht. Its present building is the most significant example of Westphalian late Gothic architecture. It lies on the north side of the Prinzipalmarkt (main market square) in the city centre. Until the early 20th century, the Roggenmarkt (which also borders the church) contained the Drubbels district of housing. To the church's east lies the Alte Fischmarkt and the Salzstraße, whilst between the church and the Salzstraße is the Lambertikirchplatz with the Lambertibrunnen.
•The Münster City Museum deals with the history of the Westphalian city of Münster.
•The Clemenskirche in the Westphalian city of Münster is a monastery and hospital church built between 1745 and 1753 for the Brothers of Mercy according to plans by Johann Conrad Schlaun. The monastery was dissolved in 1811.
•The Historical City Hall of Münster, located in the centre of Prinzipalmarkt 10, is a well-known and much-visited landmark of the city of Münster, alongside Münster Cathedral, with over 120,000 visitors recorded at the site in 2012. It rose to prominence during the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia Treaty of 1648, which concluded the Thirty Years' War in Western Europe; and the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.
•The Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster (until September 2010 Graphikmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster) was opened in 2000 in the Westphalian city of Münster and houses lithographs and other stocks in various artistic techniques and from different creative periods of Pablo Picasso with over 800 exhibits.
•The Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History (LWL-Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte) is an arts and cultural museum in Münster, Germany Besides an extensive collection ranging from spätgotik painting and sculpture to the Cranachs, the museum specializes in paintings from the Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke movements, in particular works by August Macke.
•Münster Cathedral or St.-Paulus-Dom is the cathedral church of the Catholic Diocese of Münster in Germany, and is dedicated to Saint Paul. It is counted among the most significant church buildings in Münster and, along with the City Hall, is one of the symbols of the city.
•Schloss Münster, officially Fürstbischöfliches Schloss Münster, is the schloss built as the residence of the prince-bishop of Münster, modern-day North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was built between 1767 and 1787 in baroque style as a mansion for the last but one prince-bishop Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels. The architect was Johann Conrad Schlaun. Since 1954 it has been the seat and landmark of the Westphalian Wilhelms University. The castle is built from the typical Baumberger sandstone of Münster.
•Hülshoff Castle is a typical Münsterland moated castle that was first mentioned in a document in the 11th century. Their name most likely derives from the noble ministerial family Hüls (Hulse) zu Kleve, the presumed builders of the castle, who descended from the Counts of Tecklenburg. It lies between Havixbeck and the Münster suburb of Roxel and has belonged to the municipality of Havixbeck since 1975. The castle was owned by the Barons Droste zu Hülshoff from 1417 to 2012 and is the birthplace and parental home of the poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff and other prominent members of the family.
