Lake Geneva, It’s Always Been the Place | S35 Ep. 10

Lake Geneva, one of Wisconsin’s favorite destinations, has a long and colorful history of attracting visitors from around the world. Join Discover Wisconsin as we explore Lake Geneva by lake, land and sky. You’ll discover why … it’s always been the place.

There are three beautiful lakes in the Lake Geneva area, each with its own charm and attractions. Lake Geneva Cruise Line offers multiple tours of Geneva Lake, and a favorite is the mailboat tour. In this episode, Discover Wisconsin host Josh Casey gets a front row seat on the Walworth and learns about the unique way mail is delivered during the summer season. We also take a tour to Black Point Estate, one of the many beautiful and historic mansions on Geneva Lake.

On land, host Alex Wehrley takes a walk around the Geneva Lake shore path, which is a public footpath that takes you past some of the most beautiful properties in all of Wisconsin. One part of the path, known as the Miracle Path, delights visitors with art and inspirational quotes. Josh takes us to Safari Lake Geneva, where you can get up-close with a myriad of exotic animals. You can even feed giraffes!

Then we venture to two other lakes: Delavan Lake and Lake Como. Both lakes offer fishing, water recreation, golf, dining and resorts. The Lake Lawn Queen takes visitors on a narrated tour of Delavan Lake, pointing out some of the Frank Lloyd Wright homes and other area attractions. On Lake Como, DW host Eric Paulsen visits the French Country Inn, once a get-away for Chicago gangsters. Then he enjoys dinner at Mars Resort, one of Wisconsin’s favorite supper clubs.

We take to the sky for a different view of Lake Geneva. The Lake Geneva Balloon Company has been offering hot air balloon rides for 20 years! It’s a ride that brings back your sense of wonder, as you quietly float over fields, forests and lakes in beautiful Walworth County. But for an out-of-this-world experience, we stop at Yerkes Observatory, the birthplace of American astrophysics, home of the world’s largest refracting telescope, and school to many of the world’s most brilliant astronomers. Lake Geneva, there’s more to explore!

A Wisconsin Walking Tour of Downtown Waukesha

Are you looking for a downtown with decades of history, beautiful art, and an even better community atmosphere? Look no further, Waukesha has all of that and more! Since 1838, the city has continued to grow and flourish. Whether it’s the historical figures who originated from Waukesha or the community members who continue to expand the city, Waukesha has something for everyone.

Les Paul is a well-known guitar legend and native of Waukesha. Not only was Les Paul a great artist himself, but he also invented the solid-body guitar. In addition to changing the music world, Les Paul is also the only person in the world to be inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and The National Inventors Hall of Fame. His story doesn’t end there, to learn more about Les Paul and his accomplishments, make a pit stop by the Waukesha county museum!

Not only is the historical past of Waukesha inspiring, but the current community members are creating history of their own. The Walldogs, a group of talented artists, worked alongside community members to create beautiful murals in the downtown area to represent the city. If you’re not spending your time admiring the beautiful artwork, head downtown on Friday night to join the locals for live music. You won’t want to miss Wauskeha’s beautiful art, recognizable history, and most importantly- the wonderful community members who make Waukesha home.

The Best of West Allis: Local Scenes of a Thriving City

To all the foodies out there! Get ready to join our Discover Wisconsin team for a CULINARY ADVENTURE, highlighting the Best of West Allis. This summer Apurba, our DW host, West Allis resident, and a natural foodie, invites us along for a tour of West Allis. Joined by Mayor Dan Devine, the two explore and showcase the city’s culture through the local culinary and business scene.

The two West Allis locals begin their summer with a chat at Greenfield Park while enjoying a Sunday must- donuts and crullers from Grebe’s Bakery. Here we learn about Mayor Dan’s role in cultivating the West Allis business and restaurant scene which have inspired a thriving culture.

We head to Chef Paz where we meet restaurant owner Maritza Paz. Maritza describes her background growing up in Peru and reveals how learning recipes from her mother as a child has influenced her own cooking. While Maritza shares her love for her restaurant and some of the popular, yet unique, dishes Chef Paz offers, she also sheds light on her love for West Allis and its family-like culture.

Just down National Avenue, we meet Citlali, the owner of Antigua, who shares a similar story of finding a home in West Allis. Apurba and Mayor Dan sit down to a delicious spread of Yucatan style braised pulled pork, Chicken with Mexican Mole sauce and Sun Dried Tomato & Roasted Pumpkin Seed Guacamole. We discover that many of Antigua’s latin-inspired dishes are modifications of old family recipes. Catering to the growing South American community, Citlai created cuisines with a combination of flavors including Mexican, Puerto-rican, Peruvian and Ecuadorian.

Next, we explore the West Allis farm to table scene. Thi and Carly, the owners of Wild Roots, teach Apurba how to forage for morels, one of many items Thi hunts and uses in his recipes. From the forest, we head over to the West Allis Farmers Market, another hot spot for local ingredients. Made up of local vendors selling local produce from May through November, this is definitely a gem amongst the West Allis community. Did we mention that their Farmers Market is over 100 years old!?

With ingredients in hand, we head over to Wild Roots. Natural and upcycled decor confirm the rustic farm-to-table ambiance of the restaurant. In the kitchen, we discover Thi’s magic as he brings his fresh pickings to life. Wild Roots underlines the importance of sourcing food locally and minimizing waste by upcycling products into decor and using most (if not all) parts of a meat source.

Next up? Sauce. Cheese. Meat. Veggies. A touch of herbs. And finally, a steamy brick oven fired pizza. Apurba and Mayor Dan meet up at Flour Girl and Flame. Here they chat with owner, Dana Spandet, about the sustainably sourced ingredients for their two beloved foods - Pizza and Ice Cream. Flour Girl and Flame’s utilizes locally sourced flour, vegetables from their garden, and honey made on their very own rooftop! This also aligns with their mission to support women growers in the farming community. Their motto of inclusion extends to their second business, Everyone’s Ice Cream.

We change up the scenery just down the road at Pete’s Pops. Pete Cooney shares how the business started, the novelty of each location, and how the business has grown. While enjoying their pops, Dan and Apurba also learn of the fresh ingredients used in the rotating flavors including fresh rhubarb and Georgia peaches!!

We can’t leave West Allis without a history lesson. First up, Layman Brewing to chat with Kyle, owner and head brewer. Apurba, Mayor Dan and Kyle sip classic beers which they learn are simple modifications of Kyle's great grandpa’s recipes. An extremely laid back atmosphere with phenomenal burgers, Layman’s is a hidden and historic gem within the West Allis community.

Finally, Apurba celebrates West Allis’s progress at yet another successful business in town, Ope Brewery, where she shares her love for this city with the people who have made it such a success.

Driving Around Downtown Waukesha, WI in 4k Video

Filmed on Sunday, May 28 2023, I drive around downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin to see what's going on.

The name Waukesha is thought to be derived from the Potawatomi name Wau-tsha. Wau-tsha (sometimes written as Wauk-tsha or Wauke-tsha) was the leader of the local tribe at the time of the first European settlement of the area.

The area that Waukesha now encompasses was first settled by European-Americans in 1834, with Morris D. Cutler as its first settler. When the first settlers arrived, there was nothing but dense virgin forest and wild prairie.

The original founders of Waukesha consisted entirely of settlers from New England, particularly Connecticut, rural Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well some from upstate New York. These people were Yankee settlers. In other words, they were descended from the English Puritans who settled New England in the 1600s. They were part of a wave of New England farmers who headed west into what was then the wilds of the Northwest Territory during the early 1800s.

By 1846, the area was incorporated as the Town of Prairie Village (soon changed to Prairieville). On February 8, 1847, the town changed its name to Waukesha,. On January 10, 1852, the settled area once known as Prairieville was separated from the town of Waukesha, and incorporated as a village and in 1896, incorporated as a city.

Matthew Laflin, an early pioneer of Chicago, Illinois, provided the capital and enterprise that laid the foundation for Waukesha as a famous Wisconsin watering resort and was the proprietor of the grand resort, the Fountain Spring House. Waukesha was once known for its extremely clean and good-tasting spring water and was called a spa town. This earned the city the nicknames Spring City and Saratoga of the West.

Richard W. Sears, founder of Sears and Roebuck, may have been attracted to Waukesha by the healing waters. In failing health, Sears retired from business in 1908 and, according to The New York Times, spent his time on his great farm near Waukesha. In 1914, Sears died in Waukesha of Bright's disease.

Over the years, the natural springs have been spoiled by pollution and a number have gone dry.

One of the most important firsts in American sports history occurred in Waukesha on September 5, 1906, when Carroll College (now Carroll University) hosted the football team from St. Louis University. SLU halfback Bradbury Robinson threw the first legal forward pass in football history in that game. The Carroll players and local fans were stunned. The visitors went on to win 22–0.

In 2013, Waukesha applied for permission to withdraw water from Lake Michigan. Because Waukesha is outside the lake's basin, the 2008 Great Lakes Compact makes the city ineligible to withdraw water from the lake without approval from the governors of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In June 2016, the governors approved Waukesha's application.

On November 21, 2021, Darrell E. Brooks Jr drove through the Waukesha Christmas Parade during its procession through downtown Waukesha late that afternoon, killing six people and injuring 62 others.

As of the census of 2020, the population was 71,158.

The city was 78.6% White, 3.5% Black or African American, 3.4% Asian, 0.5% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.4% from other races, and 9.6% from two or more races. The population was 14.0% Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the city was $65,688, and the per capita income for the city was $34,785. About 7.5% of families and 11.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.1% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over. #driving #travel #drivingtour

How Long Does It Take To Walk Around Lake Geneva, WI?

This is a hyper lapse of walking fully around Lake Geneva in Wisconsin captured on 4/3/2021. There is a section where the hyper lapse got turned off, so it is a little jumpy and I had to 15x the regular video footage. It does get corrected and turned back on for later in the video.
