Eastern Cape Travel Wild coast tourism project| Things to do in the Eastern Cape| South Africa
2020 was a year like no other, we had high anticipation for the year especially in the Travel & Tourism sector. Little did we know what would soon happen, in April 2020 the President announced the national lockdown on people's movement and closed down many sectors of business and the economy. This had a huge impact on the overall economy of South Africa and much more in tourism, people lost their jobs, lost family members, and lost their livelihoods.
In an attempt to help restore the travel and tourism sector to where it was and to take it to the next level, we set out on a journey to discover what the wild coast has to offer with the help of the Wild Coast Tourism Association & Eastern Cape Travel. We started our journey in Kwelera at Areena Riverside Resort.
Areena Riverside Resort is a 4-star graded property offering Cintsa accommodation for tourists and visitors on the Wild Coast. Their Adventure Village on-site offers a wide range of outdoor adventure activities which include their newly launched Ziplines, AmaZing Zing. The AmaZing Zing is a nine zipline tour over a kloof within the game reserve, accompanied by two adventure guides you will need to set aside two exhilarating hours to take part in this activity. Paintball, canoeing, and pellet gun target shooting are just some of the activities available. Their quad bike safari, an option of 20, 60 or 120 minutes, is a must followed by sundowners at the riverfront restaurant Areena Quays.
From Areena we spent the night at Yellowwood Forest, Expect an unpretentious & rustic experience with self-catering accommodation, camping, and a dormitory, just 1.5 km from the Morgan Bay beach. The Pizzeria/ Bar/ Tea Garden serves great food, awesome pizza, good coffee, and local craft beer too. Yellowwood Forest is a perfect base from which to explore the area: You choose - Abseiling, surfing, hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, horse riding, cultural exchange /rural homestay, golf ....or do nothing an hang out in a hammock and read. Yellowwood Forest is famous for its Saturday markets. There is ALWAYS a market on a Saturday at 9am - 2pm. Traders and Shoppers WELCOME, it's family-friendly.
We enjoyed many activities in Morgan Bay/Kei Mouth where we were hosted by Morgan Bay Adventures, Great Kei Adventures, Trevors Trails, and Wild Coast Horseriding trails. Activities to do include Abseiling, rock climbing, sight-seeing, hiking, guided kayaking, horseriding, and a boat cruise with a rich historical background about Nongqawuse.
Our journey didn't end there we set off to Coffee Bay where we were hosted by Coffeeshack backpackers and Oceanview hotel. There is no place like Coffeebay, our hosts gave us the best of the best when it comes to accommodation, food and activities. We enjoyed many activities such as Sunset drumming, a village walk, learnt how to surf, visited the Mapuzi cliffs and caves, watched some dolphins, kayaking in the Mthatha mouth river, ocean cliff jumping, a hike to hole-in-the-wall and some longboarding.
This itinerary took us 6 days to complete without having to rush anything. From Eastern Cape Travel we would like to thank the crew for believing in the idea and making sure that we see it through. We would like to extend our biggest gratitude to the Wild Coast Tourism Association, Areena riverside resort, Yellowwood backpackers, Morgan Bay adventures, Great Kei Adventures, Wild Coast Horseriding trails, Trevors Trails, Coffeeshack backpackers and the Oceanview hotel.

We never thought we would get robbed in South Africa. This was something we never wanted to happen, but the way we got robbed was a little strange. This happened in the Cape of Good Hope in the Western Cape of South Africa.
We started in Simons town where we explored the town and also went to Boulders Beach, where we actually got to see thousands of Penguins. Such a cool experience. Thereafter, we went to Cape of Good Hope, and this is where we got mugged.

Eastern Cape - South Africa
The Eastern Cape is known to be South Africa’s second largest province following the Northern Cape as the largest. The capital of the province is Bhisho. This province is one of natural beauty and diversity unmatched in another province. The Eastern Cape moves from the desert-like Great Karoo to the lush forests of the Wild Coast and the Keiskamma Valley, on to the Langkloof Valley.
Home to a number of renowned tertiary education establishments like Rhodes University, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the Walter Sisulu University of Technology, the Eastern Cape is a proud student supporter. Transport in and out of the Eastern Cape is not a problem as there is a good road system and there are airports at Bhisho, East London, Mthatha and Port Elizabeth, along with two major harbours in East London and Port Elizabeth.
The Langkloof Valley has large deciduous fruit growing communities while the arid Karoo is known for its sheep farming. Port Elizabeth is the largest city within the province and an important harbour. The city is also home to many sporting events throughout the year and a popular holiday spot.
The majority of the economy in the Eastern Cape is centered around manufacturing primarily automotive, with it being the hub of South Africa’s motor industry.

This province is well-known for excellent tourist attractions and accommodation establishments. From the dry Karoo to the lush Wild Coast there are many things to do, see and experience. Grahamstown plays host to the annual National Arts Festival – Africa’s largest and most colourful cultural experience. For 11 days the town of Grahamstown is inundated with art lovers and theatrical’s as the town comes alive in extravagance.
The Tsitsikamma National Park forms an 80km stretch of coast between Nature’s Valley and the Storms River mouth. The famous Otter Trail is found within this park as visitors can stroll through untouched glorious landscapes.
The Wild Coast is named as that due to it being completely wild. This area is one of the world’s most untouched locations not scarred by pollution or the touch of man. Rugged coast, beautiful nature … and wild indeed.
Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve is a World Heritage Site and one of the eight protected areas of the Cape Floral Region. The reserve covers approximately 200km of unspoiled terrain with remarkable landscapes. Seven of the country’s eight biomes are found within the reserve.
Camdeboo National Park gives visitors a chance to gain insight into the Karoo’s great wonder. Practically surrounding the town of Graaff-Reinet, Camdeboo is famous for its mighty location next to the Valley of Desolation. A perfect opportunity to see geology at its best.

Coffee Bay & Hole in The Wall South Africa Wild Coast
Coffee Bay, at the heart of South Africa's Wild Coast is a strange kind of place. There are no facilities as such, no shops other than spaza shops, some basic backpackers and pizza joints, but we managed to find a decent guest house which was awesome. The village is somewhat spoilt by the abundance of rubbish lining the streets, and beaches. Which is a pity, because it has so much potential. But it's still a wonderful place to visit, and it absolutely oozes character.
The Hole in The Wall is a must visit, we were told that the road was terrible and only passable in a 4x4. Which is incorrect, there is maintenance on the go and it can be done in a normal car. The informal guides can be a problem, I found that a firm but friendly approach was the way to go. It's a spectacular natural wonder, I highly recommend it.
