We LOVE visiting the best small towns in America. On our way home from biking the Natchez Trace Parkway we stopped in Laurel, Mississippi to see what makes this small town authentically wonderful. While the HGTV show “Hometown” is based here, the town’s revitalization both in business and real estate in Laurel goes back before the show ever hit TV. People love this town because for many, it’s home. It’s a place where friends gather, businesses grow, and people invest in the town that they all have in common.
From delicious cookies at Sweet Somethings Bakery and shopping at Southern Antiques, to strolling the giant oak lined streets of some of the best neighborhoods in Laurel, MS surrounded by some of the prettiest houses in Laurel, our one day in this town wasn’t long enough. We could have visited for days to meet more locals and eat and shop more of the best local places. Today's virtual travel walking tour, we take you to Laurel Montana on a hot summer day. Filming virtual walks for treadmill can be tough sometimes. Laurel sits about 25 miles west of Billings on Interstate 90. Turn south here to head down to Joliet and Red Lodge. Known for its oil refinery and rail yard, Laurel has been around for about a hundred years now. There's a lot of gas stations, a Walmart, and a hotel near the highway. The refinery sits on the other side of that. We focus on the old Main street and residential areas. I hope you enjoy this virtual Montana walking tour.

Laurel is a city in Yellowstone County, Montana, United States. It is the third largest community in the Billings Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is located in the Yellowstone Valley, as an east-west terminal division point of the Burlington-Northern Railroad. The population was 6,781 at the 2010 census.
Laurel is home to a Cenex Harvest States oil refinery and Montana Rail Link's Laurel Yard, the largest rail yard between St. Paul, Minnesota and Pasco, Washington.
Before Laurel became a city or a community, people passed through the site during the gold rush period, when gold was discovered at the Clarks Fork headwaters. They came by team and wagon, and by small steamer vessels up the Yellowstone River. The government was in the process of planning a railroad to the west coast, and had surveying crews out to map the country on the most direct route. Many of the prospectors that went west in search of gold, felt gold might be found in other parts of the state, so some returned to the Yellowstone Valley, and others came from the East to settle here. However, this did not take place until after the Custer Massacre in 1876. It was not until 1877 that the white man felt safe in the Yellowstone Valley, after the power of the Sioux was broken. So it was that while the memory of the Massacre of General Custer and his Command on the Little Big Horn River was still fresh in the minds of settlers of Montana, that a little community was established in the Yellowstone Valley.
The history of Laurel began when settlers began making their homes in the vicinity in 1879. There was a section house built that served as a depot and post office, situated about where Hobo Hill is, or near the center of the present railroad yards east of Laurel. The railroad pushed closer to Laurel from the east, up the Yellowstone Valley during the summer of 1882. Up to this time, there were about 200 people in the community. With the advent of the railroad, the population grew to 368 in 1900, 806 in 1910, and 2,338 in 1920.
Laurel was originally known as the station of Carlton, however by 1883, its name was changed to Laurel, after a local shrub. Laurel was considered a town in 1906, but it was not until August 1908 that it became incorporated, and two months later, on October 10, 1908, city government was established with the election of a city council and mayor.

This hike was an easy 2.3 miles roundtrip with a beautiful waterfall at the end!
Day 2 - #clingmansdome & #archrock & #alumcave
Climngman's Dome is an awesome 1 mile roundtrip hike that takes you to the roof of the National Park! Up 6,643 feet you'll have an incredible panorama view of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Arch Rock and Alum Cave is an awesome 4.6 mile roundtrip hike that starts with an easy creekside hike to Arch Rock. Arch Rock is a huge natural rock tunnel you can walk through! Alum Cave is a huge cavern in the rock with a wonderful overlook of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Day 3 - #jakescreek to #aventcabin
This trail starts with a walk through an old neighborhood! Pass through old stone chimneys where houses once stood. At the end of the hike you see a real life cabin! Avent Cabin is still standing, you can explore inside and outside this beautiful cabin deep in the Smoky Mountains.
Day 4 - #cadescove & #abramsfalls & #richmountaintrail
Cades Cove is an 11 mile loop drive that is an absolute MUST while visiting Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can spot wildlife and enjoy the wonderful mountain views while taking this loop.
Abrams Falls is a hike whose trailhead is on Cades Cove. This 5 mile hike takes you to a ridiculously awesome waterfall, one of the best destinations in the entire park.
Rich Mountain Trail is an 11 mile dirt road that is only open in the Summer. The road starts near Cades Cove and takes you on a winding loop through the forest!

I haven't visited historic Philadelphia, the birthplace of America, since I was a kid but this time I brought along my youngest niece. If you love American history, this is a must-do trip. One of the great things about visiting historic Philadelphia is that all of the main attractions are within easy walking distance of each other. We visited Independence Hall (my favorite because the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were signed here), the Liberty Bell, Benjamin Franklin's Grave in Christ Church Burial Ground, the Philadelphia Mint (my niece's favorite because you can see the coins being minted), the President's House (America's first White House), the National Constitution Center (where original copies of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights are held), the Betsy Ross House (where seamstress Betsy Ross allegedly sewed the first American flag), and more!

WE EXPLORE HGTV'S HIT SHOW HOME TOWN IN LAUREL, MISSISSIPPI | SCOTSMAN CO | LAUREL MERCANTILE
On our last and final video of our 2021 road trip from Florida to Montana we spent the day in Laurel, Mississippi. This is where my (Melissa's) personal favorite HGTV show, Hometown is made. In this show locals Ben and Erin Napier fix up houses for families while also starting a revitalization project in their hometown.
We explored Ben's store, Scotsman Co which is a mixture of his woodshop, where you can see him woodworking and a general store where you can buy all kinds of goodies. (See Video) And then we went to Erin's store, Laurel Mercantile. Where you can buy all kinds of house wares. Then we were hungry, so we checked out 2 local spots, a restaurant and a bakery. And they were both yummy!
