From Wikipedia
Morganton is a city in and the county seat of Burke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 16,918 at the 2010 census. Morganton is approximately 240 miles (390 km) northeast of Atlanta, Georgia.

Morganton is one of the principal cities in the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. A site five miles north of here has been identified as the Mississippian culture chiefdom of Joara, occupied from AD 1400 to AD 1600. This was also the site of Fort San Juan, built in 1567 by a Spanish expedition as the first European settlement in the interior of North America, 40 years before the English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia.
During the Civil War, the Western North Carolina Railroad stopped just a few miles east of Morganton and a Confederate training camp, named Camp Vance after North Carolina's wartime governor Zebulon Vance (whose wife, Hariette Espy Vance, was from Morganton), which was located just outside of town. Both the railroad and the camp were the targets of a raid across the mountains from Tennessee, by the Union Loyalists of the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry in July 1864. On April 17, 1865 there was a small skirmish fought in Morganton, as part of Stoneman's 1865 raid through North Carolina.

After the Civil War, Morgantonian Tod R. Caldwell, became the only Governor of North Carolina from Morganton, when he took over the office after the impeachment of William Woods Holden in 1871.

Public welfare facilities, such as the North Carolina School for the Deaf: Main Building and Western North Carolina Insane Asylum, were first authorized by the state legislature in the late 19th century.

Morganton Village, 1939
In the early 20th century, textile mills were developed in the Piedmont as industry left union-dominated areas of the Northeast United States. During the century, however, these industrial jobs gradually moved offshore.

In the late 20th century, Morganton and Burke County, was still largely rural and with big poultry farms, which became locations for industrial-scale poultry processing plants. These jobs attracted many new immigrants to the state from Central America, leading to an increase in the Latino population in the area.

During the 1990s, Guatemalan-born workers in Morganton, worked to organize a union at the Case Farms poultry plant but were ultimately unsuccessful. Labor and factory work have changed in the Nuevo South, where many Latino immigrants work in low-paid industrial jobs. They are competing with globalization in some industries. At the state level, North Carolina is working to encourage immigrant communities and their contributions.

North Georgia Gems: Waterfalls, Bavarian Village, & an Alpine Coaster!

One of the best things about traveling is learning about places that you had never heard of and/or never thought to visit. For us, that was Northern Georgia! Our original itinerary (in quotes because our plans change almost daily) never included spending time in this part of Georgia, but from the second we learned how much natural beauty was in the Northern part of the state, we knew we had to go!

We spent one day hiking, visiting waterfalls, transporting to Germany in Helen, eating fudge, riding the Georgia Mountain Coaster, and having SO much fun! This area of the US is truly an underrated gem (we couldn't believe we were in Georgia) and we're so to continue to find more unexpected gems around the US this year.

ASHEVILLE - USA Travel Guide | Around The World

The city of Asheville is nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains in Western North Carolina. Asheville serves as the county seat of Buncombe County. The city is the largest in Western North Carolina with a population of approximately 75,000 and a metro population of 417,012.

According to Lonely Planet, This Jazz Age gem of a city appears like a mirage out of the mists of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Asheville is a popular tourist destination and is known as a liberal, artsy community. It was named one of the world's top 12 must-see destinations for by Frommer's travel guides. This Paris of the South, has also been described as the San Francisco of the East, New Age Mecca, and Land of the Sky. It's a city of which Rolling Stone magazine dubbed America’s New Freak Capital. But Asheville is by no means simply a haven for Hippies and 'Out There's', as Money magazine has called Asheville one of the Best Places to Retire, and AARP cites it as one of the Best Places to Reinvent Your Life. Self magazine proclaims Asheville as America’s Happiest City. PETA lists Asheville as America's Best Vegetarian-Friendly Small City. Author Lee Pantas, in his guidebook The Ultimate Guide To Asheville & The Western North Carolina Mountains says it all in describing Asheville as a city not easily forgotten once visited. In 2007, Asheville was named one of the top seven places to live in the U.S. by Forbes, and in 2011 Asheville was picked as one of the “10 Most Beautiful Places in America” by Good Morning America.

Asheville is nationally renowned for its unique architecture, especially downtown and around the Biltmore Estate. The city suffered greatly during the Great Depression, and consequently little development happened during the time. This actually had a positive effect, as the city's famous Art Deco Architecture of the Roaring 20's was saved from destruction. Therefore, today, Asheville boasts the nations most complete collection of Art Deco structures. Other architectural styles, of course, are present in abundance throughout the city; from the Neo-Gothic Jackson Building Skyscraper to the Modern BB&T Tower.

The Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) is Western North Carolina's largest airport. It offers jet and commuter service on Allegiant, United, American, and Delta through its carriers – Atlantic Southeast Airlines and Comair. Asheville has non-stop service to Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, Newark, Orlando and Tampa. It is located fifteen miles south of downtown Asheville near the town of Fletcher. Ground transportation and major rental car companies are available at the airport terminal.

Flights into Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) located in Greenville, South Carolina, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) located in Charlotte, North Carolina, or McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) located in Knoxville, Tennessee, are sometimes cheaper than flying directly to Asheville. Greenville is about a 1.5 hour drive, Charlotte and Knoxville are both about 2 hour drives.

Girls Trip to Morganton Ga: The Turn Down

We love a good turn up. My girls and I are always ready to hit the dance floor. But sometimes you need a #TurnDown moment. So we headed to #Morganton Georgia and had a relaxing weekend in a very cute cabin. Cabins are a great place for a girls trip, it allows you to take a break from the hustle and bustle and slow down.

My #1 tip for traveling to a cabin….BRING EVERYTHING YOU NEED!! If your location is up on a beautiful mountain with great views you wont be trying to drive back down those step roads at night or multiple times.

When we booked our cabin we also scheduled massages. Our masseuse #SilhouetteJarmonGigetts was amazing and if your considering the #Morganton area I would absolutely recommend her. By the time she worked the knots out of all of us we wanted to stick her in our suitcase and take her with us. There is a few wineries and a whiskey distiller in the area that we didn’t get to try this go around but you better believe we will next time.
