Places to see in ( Montrose - UK )

Montrose is a coastal resort town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. Montrose is situated 38 miles north of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. Montrose is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times.

The skyline of Montrose is dominated by the 220-foot (67 m) steeple of Old and St Andrew's Church, designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1832 and 1834. Montrose is a town with a wealth of architecture, and is a centre for international trade. It is an important commercial port for the thriving oil and gas industry.

Montrose is known for its wide thoroughfare and high street which leads to picturesque closes containing secluded gardens. The town has a view of a 2 mi (3 km) square tidal lagoon, Montrose Basin, which is considered a nature reserve of international importance. Montrose is the largest inland salt water basin in the UK, and an important habitat for the mute swan. Just outside Montrose is the 18th-century House of Dun, designed by the Scottish architect William Adam and built in 1730 for David Erskine, 13th Laird of Dun.

Montrose occupies a position on the North Bank of Montrose Basin at the mouth of the River South Esk on the East Coast of Scotland, The expanse of the town extends to the villages on its fringes; Hillside and Ferryden. It lies close to the hamlets of Lunan and St Cyrus. The rural location ensures that the air quality is good, with low levels of nitrogen dioxide and PM10.

The Montrose Basin is a shallow estuary approximately three miles in diameter. Montrose is situated where the River South Esk meets the North Sea. During the 16th century, local landowners desiring more arable land considered reducing its size, but their plans were never carried out.

The 3-mile-long (4.8 km) sandy Montrose Beach has been awarded a Blue Flag for its eco credentials. The surrounding Traill Pavilion and Seafront Splash! facilities with an arcade, a playground, a café and an ice-cream stall is popular amongst locals and visitors alike. North of the town the River North Esk enters the North Sea across the Montrose Beach .

8 Best Towns to Live in Scotland

What are the best towns in Scotland? Only a few people would disagree with the description of Scotland as the most rugged and most beautiful of all the four UK nations. Many would celebrate Scotland for its deep and fascinating history, striking mountains, and stately castles not to mention misty lochs and its mythological monsters. Truly, cities and towns in Scotland have a lot of good things for which you should love them. Focusing now on towns, we present here the best 8 towns to live in Scotland.
These smaller gems are scattered across the glens and valleys of Scotland to give the nation an incredible landscape. The next time you plan on vacationing in Scotland, try and see if you can choose some of these 8 best towns to live in Scotland.
8. Helensburgh
A good place to begin beaming our searchlight is Helensburgh, a rich coastal town in Argyll and Bute council area. The town founded in 1776 as a spa by Colquhoun is at the intersection of the Firth of Clyde and East Clyde. The 15,000 residents of this town named after its founder’s wife have their own Community Council. Its unique location 40 kilometers northwest of Glasgow on the water, provides good access from the town to Glasgow. That’s one good reason to love it.
According to The Sunday Times ranking of the best places to live in Britain, Helensburgh is one of the 12 best locations to live in Scotland. Among the wide range of factors considered before the conclusion is reached are job availability and satisfaction, academic performances and exam results, community spirit, broadband speed, and local shops. In any of these, Helensburgh is never found wanting. Thus, we agree that this is one of the best towns to live in Scotland.
7. Bearsden
Bearsden, a town in East Dunbartonshire and on the northwestern fringe of Greater Glasgow is the next on our list. The town about 5.2 kilometers northwest of Glasgow City Center is a suburb with a population of about 28,000 and it provides quick and easy access to the city center.
We first thought of including Bearsden here when it appeared on a list of the 8 best places in Scotland. That list was compiled by The Sunday Times. Looking closer, we found out that the town has an array of cute homes, quality schools, and a thriving community of small shops. This makes it a desirable option for raising a family. It has all of the nighttime entertainment you could ask for.
Though the crime rate in Glasgow city center is high, Bearsden is quite quiet, making it a good place to call home around Glasgow. It’s also one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world.
6. Dunkeld
Let’s proceed to Dunkeld a town in Perth and Kinross. The town is located on the north bank of the River Tay and opposite Birnam. Dunkeld is frequently referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands because of its proximity to the geological Highland Boundary Fault. The town that is one of the most loved in the UK is also one of the best towns to live in Scotland. It’s a popular holiday area in Scotland. It’s also well connected by road and rail to all the major centers in Scotland and the other parts of the UK. Though the town with an estimated population of 1,300 may be relatively small, it’s among the best.
This historically and naturally significant town has been a settlement since ancient times. That’s why you will find a historical cathedral and other historical edifices that would even remind you that it was declared the capital of the Scottish nation in the 9th Century.

The Coolest UK City? Bristol Really Surprised Me On My First Ever Visit. Join Me On My Brunel Tour!

I must admit to knowing pretty much nothing about Bristol before this visit and the only reason I was here was to learn a bit more about one of the greatest engineers in the history of the world - Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
In today's video I'll take you for a walk around the city with a loosely based theme of visiting as many Brunel sights as I can find.

We'll see a famous Brunel bridge, a less famous Brunel bridge, a mighty 1800s transatlantic ship, a castle-like railway station and a clock with two times. We may even eat a pie. Enjoy the video...

My visit was on Tuesday 1st August 2023. I was also there on the Wednesday as well, but we won't count that as the weather turned pretty awful (which put an end to other video plans I had in the area!)

Hi, I’m Steve from Scotland. I plan, film and edit travel videos both at home and throughout the world, with all the work done myself. I try to go a bit beyond the normal tourist route, exploring less-visited places and would be honoured if you'd come along as well. But please don't expect an expert guide, if that's what you're after, this is probably not the channel for you. What you WILL find here though are my 100% honest impressions of what I see along the way, albeit as a layman. And I always believe the star of any video is not me, but the places I visit. I hope this comes across and you can feel like you are there with me. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment, share, all that stuff if you enjoy my videos (or even a thumbs down if you don't!). I make a conscious effort not to say this in the videos themselves, but it would be a massive help to the channel and open it up to bigger audiences around the world. Oh, and who's that with me in many of the adventures? Well that must be my glamorous sidekick Alicja (who features as often as she can). Thanks for watching and enjoy the video :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

This wasn't as easy as we expected! Visiting 10 iconic Glasgow pubs, all in a single (rainy) day...

The weather scuppered our plans to film a video in Glasgow today, so at the last minute we pulled together a list of 10 iconic local pubs and set off trying to visit them all in a day. What better way to discover a city and its people!

We weren't sure how this one would work, filming in public places can be tricky, especially when people have a few beers in them, so join us to see what happened...

Filmed on location in Glasgow on Monday 9th January 2023.

A geographical extreme that's tricky to get to PLUS my favourite beach. All in one glorious weekend!

With weather like this, there was only one place for our weekend - the coast! But we pushed it as far west as is possible on the British mainland. Join us on a beautiful February weekend as we visit the most westerly mainland point, take in the views across to the islands, find a rubbish overnight parking spot and do something we rarely do in February in Scotland :D Enjoy the video...

Filmed on weekend of 25/26 February 2023.

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

Old Photographs Of Montrose Angus Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Montrose, Scottish Gaelic: Monadh Rois, a coastal resort town and former royal burgh in Angus. It is situated 38 miles North of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. It is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times. It is known that golf has been played on the links of Montrose for more than four hundred and fifty years making it one of the very earliest and important venues in the history of the Royal and Ancient game. It was not until 1810, however, that the golfers of Montrose formed themselves into a club. Panmure Barracks was built in Montrose in 1779 and was originally an asylum. It became a Barracks for the Angus and Mearns Militia in the midle of the 19th century. It was demolished between the World War I and World War 2. and the area has subsequently been built over. A cannon was found on the site in 1992, built into a World War I gun emplacement. Montrose New Bridge was completed to the design of Sir E wen Williams in 1930, replacing an earlier suspension bridge. Sir Evan Owen Williams, born 20 March 1890, died 23 May 1969, was a British engineer and architect. Williams born at 16 Caroline Terrace in Tottenham, London, England, on 20 March 1890. He was the son of Evan Owen Williams, a Welsh-born grocer and Mary Roberts. Originally both farmers, they both moved to London some years before Owen was born. Williams had two sisters and two brothers. Mary Kate, died young, but the second born, Elizabeth Maud, became an author. Owen had an older brother, Robert Osian, who was a successful banker and came out of retirement to manage the finances of his brother's engineering practice which was launched in 1940. The final chapter of the ill fated 1715 Jacobite rebellion was played out in Montrose. Towards the end of the uprising, which had lasted nearly six months, from September 1715 to February 1716, James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender; formerly James, Prince of Wales, arrived in Montrose, where he spent his last night in Scotland, on 4 February 1716. He sailed from Montrose to exile in France. The town was held for his son, Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie; the Young Pretender, 30 years later and in February 1746 the largest naval battle of the war was fought in Montrose Harbour. Before World War I the Royal Flying Corps established a base at Montrose, later RAF Montrose,. On 26 February 1913, it became the first operational military aerodrome to be established in the United Kingdom. During World War II Montrose became a hub for a constant stream of international pilots from all over the Commonwealth, Poland, Czechoslovakia, America, Russia, France and other allied nations. As well as a training base Montrose was also an operational airfield for Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire squadrons, which flew sorties over Norway and were a part of the air defences for Edinburgh. Scurdie Ness Lighthouse is located on the headland and has also been referred to as Montroseness Lighthouse.
