10 Best place to visit in Montagne Blanche Mauritius

x

Montagne Blanche Mauritius has no worries, Sans Soucci is close by.

From the bustling heart of the town to the outlying suburbs and beyond into the sugarcane fields with its nineteen forties stopover point, there is a relaxed attitude to things. Maybe because Sans Soucci is so close, or maybe the fresh mountain air has something to do with it, but it feels right.

Starting in town, we explored the main street, with its shops and building, including the old cinema, which is for sale. Turning off into one of the numerous diagonal streets, we found roasting chickens and a new mask. After eating some grilled chicken, we headed back to the parking at the post office.

The post office has free parking and is an easy walk into the main town. It is also the old train station. Well preserved stone walls and long used and worn stains with a piece of platform jutting out of the new building. Behind is some more to explore, the part of the train station, not incorporated into the post office.

Off the Sans Soucci, it means no worries, It was an old sugar mill that stopped operating in 1946, that that is what the place looks like. A real blast from the past. It reminded us of an old pre-1930s depression gas station in the American route 66. Great old building and well-looked after.

A stop at the bridge near the medical school, it was easy to access the wall, and the views from the one side were grand, a real oasis. Then onto the real find. In a spiritual park there is a bridge, that seems out of this world, must be seen to be believed, with the shelves made from old veranda holders.

Quick stop at hotel Janat and on to the polytechnic university but we were denied access, so we had some fun, 'not' showing it. Our last stop was the irrigation channels, made to last in the 1940s and 50s. It was a long and exhausting day, but, no worries, it was great.

Dagotiere, the friendliest village in Mauritius?

We visit Dagotiere in the Moka District of Mauritius, and it might be one of the friendliest places. Starting with Vishal snack for some great fried chicken we took to the streets. Everyone had a warm welcome and showed us around with a smile. We tried a new snack and ate some peanuts from an old friend and then it was off to Alma, a grand sugar mill chimney. We managed to get some great drone footage, our first of a chimney, I was beaming like a kid. We also checked out the new housing estate opened by Mr. Modi of India and the Mauritian prime minister. A short stop at Dickson lake and a few guavas rounded off a very enjoyable day. Thanks go out to the welcoming people of Dagotiere.

Riche Fond / Saint Julien Mauritius Vlog

We adventure around Riche Fond and Saint Julien in the Flacq district. Starting with a fantastic fruit cup, probably the best I have had. We then walked through the spiritual park. One end has a wall where the old railway went and the other has a great round bridge. We explored a gold Hindu temple and then drove to a blue lake, where I met a wasp nest collector. He told me a bit about the history of the region, and Mauritius.

We stopped at St. Julien church, which has a relic from pope Jean-Paul and we even found a national monument in the graveyard. In the hunt for food we came across a great snack shop, but that is for another video.

Pointe Aux Piments Mauritius putting the chill in chilli

Pointe Aux Piments Mauritius or Chilli Point is so relaxing I started calling it Chill Point. The endless beach views and relaxed snack shops simply put you in the mood to sit and admire the view. Clustered with all-inclusive resorts, you can still find history, a beautiful old sugar mill chimney, and 5 lime kilns.

Tami had the best views of the day as she waited in the plentiful parking bays overlooking the ocean. We ventured down the main road in search of snacks. The walk was pleasant, but because the beaches were closed we had to walk on the road, they don't have pavement, I guess you would normally walk along the beach. The first stretch of about 500 meters has tons to offer, patank courts, ocean temples, a shrine, and of course plenty of foods to try.

We got a panini from Sunset Filaos. It came with chips and salad and we ordered the extra samosas and tamarind juice. Could I dining room have been any better, I doubt it. A simple wooden bench overlooking the sea. The food was freshly made and hot and I don't remember how long it took, we were too engrossed in the view, but it felt very short. Well worth the price, even though they charged more than what the board said. I only noticed this when checking the footage.

I then told a fantastic story about the vampire that is very funny and the sort of thing that can only happen in a small relaxed town where rumors run rampant. We grabbed Tami and headed inland to Max souvenir shop, which was closed, waiting for the influx of tourists to return. Across the road is a real treat, as Riki described it, Fairytale wall of banyan trees, hid a secret. Five lime kilns. Not in the best condition, but there are 5. They are on the edge of the most beautiful football field in the world, again, quoting Riki. There is an art gallery, Ananti, right next to it, with some rocks and a sculpture on the lawn.

A short trip brought us to Bellvue Rivet sugar mill chimney, a beautiful old, but small chimney. Annexed in eighteen what what (1857) she was made in the French style using lime mortar, probably from the same kilns we saw earlier. The top is still open, but it looks like someone has been digging into the side and some of the stones are missing. Right near it, behind a few houses and surrounded by chickens is an old presbyterian chapel of Saint Pierre. They have repaired it and it looks good for another 100 years.

We then started a whirlwind tour of some of the accommodation on offer, unfortunately, they were all closed, but we knew the prices. The Oberoi is one of the top resorts in Mauritius, priced from 500 Euros a night, it also contains 3 national heritage sites. The cheapest, but still very nice looking Le Margarita, with their pool and a short walk to the beach came in at 25 Euros a night. The Victoria Beachcomber has sea-facing rooms from 140 Euros a night and we got to show some of the views. They are right next to a marine park, so a must-check-out place for scuba divers. Lastly Le Meridian, it looked very swish, but they don't share their pricing.

Our final stop on the adventure was to the closed aquarium, the only one in Mauritius. We drove off through the back end of town and were followed by a van selling something. The story ends with me trying my new favorite jam, guava jam, made by my good friend Reetish. He was the one I was on the phone with at Le Meridian.

We drive around Moka in Mauritius

We drive down the main road in Moka, looking out for the smart city. Most of it is behind lush vegetation on the main road, so we head into the heart of the village, which seems to be made up of lots of smaller villages, but all under the banner of prosperity, An interesting drive that ended up where we started (luckily).

Black River Mauritius, where the past and present collide

Black River has so much to offer any type of visitor it's hard to choose. We went with the abundant history on this adventure, with a short stop at a mall for a great lunch. The massive Martello towers share space with beautiful beaches, while ancient buildings, make way for the modern world. The abandoned houses were sobering but awesome to visit, but the cannons, oh yes, beautiful cannons were everywhere.

We started at what @Lucy Leheilleix fittingly called the tunnels. These stone buildings were set into the side of a hill and share the area with a lime kiln you could walk into. We still have no idea what they were originally used for, but they felt like something military, perhaps a battery of some sort. We were then guided to an old wooden house with a black shingled roof.

At the start we had no idea that it was the old home of the Black River CID headquarter. My exploring nature took over and I looked all over and inside. Still, in ok condition, it is not long for this world as a giant banyan tree has started to eat its way through it. If the red car that is more tree than car now is anything to go by, the building will be a tree soon. Saying our goodbyes to our gracious host we head out. A quick lunch at La Kiosk restaurant in the Ruisseau Creole Mall, a great panini, that I improved.

Across the bay to La Batterie de l’Harmonie that delivered a Martello tower in fantastic condition, and you can go in. The sheer size of this monument is breathtaking when you have been visiting sugar mill chimneys for a while. The inside was like a cave, the water running through the lime mortar has created stalactites and stalagmites where ever it has dripped. I walked the plank and climbed the rickety old ladder and was rewarded with easy access stone stairs to the roof. The views were all-encompassing but too soon I descended and we were off to Chateaux La Pointe Koenig, an abandoned house that holds many secrets.

The house is empty, there is no litter on the floor or old furniture around, but the place is full of bad graffiti, apart from the back build. There you will find three large examples of true street art, and the arts have a new fan of their work. Outback there is a perfect cannon, still standing on its mounts and sitting in its track, and watching over the battlements. Plunging down a cliff I met up with Riki on the beach.

A short stop at Saint Augustine Church with its colourful stained glass and off to the post office and marine cemetery the last resting place of Colonel Draper, founder of the turf club. I tell some stories about Paul and Virginie and their creator Bernadine Saint Pierre. We did our 'start the montage' dance in front of two laughing girls, a little embarrassing, but fun.

La Preneuse beach delivered another Martello tower and 5 cannons, one on top that took a drone to see. This tower actually houses a museum, but it wasn't open. We met Vero Laos, a fellow Youtuber and she interviewed me, awesome. It is also thanks to her for the drone footage. A quick scout around and we were off up the hill.

We finished the adventure at the cave of the virgin for the poor. Maybe it is a church or someone's house, all I know is it has a huge pigeon sculpture on its roof.

Black River has a tourist feel about it, but it really does deliver on its history, the type you feel in your bones and on your fingertips.

Curepipe Mauritius (It didn't rain) Glorious sunshine day

We visit Curepipe on a glorious sunny day. What a place. From the historic to the hustle and bustle of a huge city. Only recently out of the red zone, the city is coming back with a bang.

The market is an impressive art deco structure where we started our tour of Curepipe, with tons of fresh produce inside, including chicken, lamb, beef and a host of different types of fish, from tuna to snapper.

We walked the street in what can only be described as the heart Curepipe and discovered a type of shopping mall call arcades. one even had a garden in it. On one of the back streets, we found a grill. They were cooking chicken and lamb, it smelt so good we bought some lamb.

We then visited the royal college, which is an imposing structure, as if it had been plucked from the hallowed universities of Cambridge or Oxford. In front of the college is the National Heritage site of the missing soldier from world war one, with Tommy and Paulu.

At the main crossroads of Curepipe we saw the iconic MCB building and the Arcade across the street that looks even older but is just designed to look that way. Inside the Arcade is a great cake shop, Chelseas Cup and Cake and a very trendy bar.

A short walk down the road leads you to St Theresa's Church, a magnificent old building which is currently under renovation. Across the road from the church is the Curepipe Municipality building complex which houses quite a few National Monuments in the form of statues. One is of Paul and Virginie in bronze, copied exactly from the original by D'Epinay in marble. Another is of Abbot Caile who was the first person to chart the stars of the Southern Hemisphere. He also calculated the exact location of Mauritius and produced a detailed map.

Next to the Municipality is the Carnegie Library and the Town Hall which are both National Heritage sites. The Carnegie Library was built with funds donated by Carnegie and filled with books donated by many Mauritian collectors. The Town Hall is undergoing extensive renovation but interestingly was originally built in Moka and moved to Curepipe.

We then went into Lakesview Mall which is a food court overlooking a beautiful waterway. Curepipe is known as The City of Lights and this is because it had electricity back in 1865! Many people had moved here from Port Louis during the malaria outbreaks and the arrival of the train led to even further development. Canals were built in the 1930s which greatly reduced the humidity and swampiness, but couldn't halt the extraordinary amount of rain.

At the end of our tour of Curepipe, we visit the old market which will be transformed shortly as the trains are returning in the form of a metro. We enjoy a dhol puri from one of the many food vendors near the bus station.
