FAQ
================================

Q: How long was the trip?
A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.

Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD

Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals

Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

Q: Where did you stay overnight?
A: You can find links to the different accommodations above + alternatives.

MUST SEE REMOTE JAPAN | Shikoku Island (scarecrow village, waterfalls, bridges) IYA VALLEY TOKUSHIMA

This place is wild! ???? The Iya Valley blew us away. We went to a village filled with hundreds of scarecrows, crossed 3 bridges made of vines, saw a waterfall, ate lunch on top of a mountain, and drove some pretty sketchy narrow roads. We had a great day getting off the beaten path in Japan, in such a peaceful and remote area that's just filled with things to do!

MORE IYA VALLEY ADVENTURES:

The Iya Valley (祖谷渓, Iyakei) is a remote, mountainous valley in the Tokushima Prefecture on Japan's Shikoku Island. There used to be 13 suspension bridges existing in the valley, but now there are just 3 remaining. While the main pull for tourists is Iya Kazurabashi, we recommend going early to see it, as it can get really crowded! Or alternitively, you can visit the more remote and less visited double vine bridges and possibly have the place to yourself. There are a lot of activities, museums and sites to see in the valley, so 2-3 days to see it all would be best.

We recommend renting a car to explore the valley, as the area is pretty remote. There are a few buses, but they only come a few times a day and limit how much you can see in a day! If you are wanting to experience remote Japan, the Iya Valley is a must see.

■TripNotes

Spot 1: Iya Valley; Kazurabashi Bridge
Miyoshi is Japan's well-kept secret where the beautiful nature has been left untouched. Cross the Kazurabashi suspension bridge that overlooks the mountain stream of Iya River to experience Japan's raw nature. This thrilling swaying bridge is made from the Hardy kiwi plant (actinidia arguta). Feel the adventure as you navigate through the magnificent nature.

Spot 2: Naruto Strait
World's biggest whirlpools occur in Seto Inland Sea's Naruto Strait. Watch this phenomenon from the Onaruto Bridge that connects Naruto of Tokushima prefecture and Awaji Island of Hyogo prefecture or take a ride on the tide watching cruise. A famous Japanese anime is based on the Naruto Strait Whirlpools.
The whirlpools appear during high and low tides, but they are most powerful during the low tides of Spring and Autumn.

Food: Iya Soba
Iya Soba is the local specialty of the Iya area in Miyoshi.
Made from secluded Iya's pure waters and local soba flour, it is known for the noodles, which are thicker and shorter than normal soba. When you take a bite, the aroma of the soba fills your mouth and the simple texture makes the it very enjoyable to eat.
