From the JR Fukui Station (located a two-hour ride away from #Osaka/#Kyoto and 45 minutes away from #Kanazawa), walk over to the Echizen Railway Station and take a train on the Mikuni-Awara Line to Mikuni Station
From there, take a Keifuku bus to Tojinbo (1 hour 20 minutes total/1,010 JPY or about $10 US)
■ On weekends and holidays, don’t forget to ask for a ‘free kippu’ for unlimited rides on Echizen Railway trains for the whole day for the amazing price of 1,000 JPY or around $10 US ♪

Koketso also known as Angello, I am a South African living in Japan and I am here on the JET Program.
Being placed in a small seaside town in rural Japan you would think it has nothing to offer (judging by the standards that I know- rural South Africa, emakhaya) but the town of Mikuni has a lot to engage in.
As a South African moving abroad I had my preconceived ideas about what this rural town would be. After many Instagram hashtags, blogs, and barely any vlogs about Fukui I was quickly swayed.
I went to the Mikuni festival.
This year the Mikuni festival was on everyone's lips when I arrived on the JET Program just a little over a month ago. And boy, did it deliver. It is one of the biggest cultural and historical festivals in the area, dare I say Hokuriku region in Japan.
Mikuni festival is both a cultural and historical festival in Fukui Prefecture that has been around for over 300years. It is essentially to connect the different Shinto shrines in the Mikuni area. Shinto is the 'native religion of Japan'. And not Buddhism as others would assume a. The festival is A celebration of the Mikuni main shrine.
Past that, there is a flower park in the next town and it too is a hit during the summer. When I went there was only the roses that have blossomed but Yuri-no-Sato park is beautiful in the summer and at night, apparently. Japan has a lot of festivals, tourist areas and activities centered around flowers. You may even come across a flower festival.
I also went to one of the major tourist attractions in Fukui prefecture which is the dinosaur museum in Katsuyama. It is one of the leading dinosaur museums and I can confirm that part of it is cause of the information contained, the actual fossils, bones, the inclusivity options, the guide and world class architecture building you cannot miss from miles away. The interesting architecture building is a glistening dinosaur egg in the footing of the mountain range that surrounds Katsuyama, a beautiful contrast to the forest around.

Travel destinations in Fukui Prefecture just an hour away from my house.
VISIT TO A JAPANESE TEMPLE | TEMPLE VISIT | MIKUNI, FUKUI BUDDHISM TEMPLE | JAPAN RELIGION
I visited 2 local Buddhism temples. They were as beautiful as you would imagine, almost having the hair at the back of my head up. Interesting enough Buddhism is not the 'native'/traditional religion of Japanese, Shinto is.
The 'alters' reminded me of the Jabiro episode on Love Death + Robots that's on Netflix. A genuine masterpiece.
One, Takadan-ji Temple, was located in a small ecosystem of its own with streams and greenery I truly appreciated and the other, Mikuni Narita San Temple, is set atop a hill overlooking Mikuni.

Port Town Mikuni and two Akiya Houses under $40,000 USD - Old Houses Old Towns of Japan
Here is my first attempt at visiting old houses (traditional houses that are listed for sale) of small towns in rural Japan. My first stop is Mikuni of Sakai city Fukui prefecture. After learning about the history of Kitamaebune (cargo ships) from Edo to Meiji period, I have always wanted to visit more port towns along the sea of Japan. It's more difficult than I thought trying to cover all the topics (houses, people, living environment, etc) in a short YouTube video, but I am hoping these videos can be helpful to people wanting to know more about the rural small towns of Japan.
