Mexborough Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of South Yorkshire, and around 12 miles northeast of Sheffield, is the town of Mexborough. Historically it was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire up until 1974.

The name 'Mexborough' means 'Meoc's fortification', where Meoc is believed to be an Old Norse personal name. Geographically it is located along the north bank of the River Don. The river was made navigable by cargo boats from the 18th century, leading to growth in the town due to its various industries.

Between the 18th and 20th centuries, Mexborough became a producer of brick and glass, and a coal mining and quarrying town. In 1875 Mexborough engine shed opened, although technically located in the neighbouring town of Swinton, which is part of a continuous urban area. At its peak it could handle around 150 steam locomotives, but it would eventually close in 1964 as steam trains were being phased out.

Mexborough's railway station opened in 1871. Today it is situated on the Swinton to Doncaster Line, providing access to Sheffield in approximately half an hour, and to Doncaster in around a quarter of an hour.

Famous people from Mexborough include actor Brian Blessed.

Places to see in ( Doncaster - UK )

Doncaster, is a large market town in South Yorkshire, England. Together with its surrounding suburbs and settlements, the town forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster . The Doncaster skyline is dominated by the minster in the middle of the town. The Frenchgate Shopping Centre holds an important position in the skyline, along with the Doncaster College Hub building and Cusworth Hall. Cusworth Hall is an 18th-century Grade I listed country house in Cusworth, near Doncaster. Set in the landscaped parklands of Cusworth Park, Cusworth Hall is a good example of a Georgian country house.

Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Doncaster is about 20 miles (30 km) from Sheffield, with which it is served jointly by an international airport, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield in Finningley. The Doncaster Urban Area includes Doncaster and the neighbouring small village of Bentley as well as some other villages.

Doncaster sits on the European Route E15 and is the starting point of European Route E13. The E13 connects Doncaster, Sheffield, Nottingham to London. Doncaster is a European hub with a new international airport, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield opened in 2005. Doncaster International Railport facilities link to the Channel Tunnel.

From around the 16th century, Doncaster embraced the wealthy stagecoach trade. This led to horse breeding in Doncaster, which in turn led to the start of horseraces there. Recent leisure developments include a new community sports stadium for sports teams including the towns men's football club, Doncaster Rovers F.C.

DONCASTER | Full Tour of Doncaster South Yorkshire, England

Full 4K walking tour of Doncaster City Centre, South Yorkshire, England
A look at the market town of Doncaster in Yorkshire in the North of England
Also watch this tour of Rotherham ????

Doncaster Town Centre was basked in beautiful sunshine when we filmed this walk through the streets to take a look at the people, shops and businesses in this bustling market town

In this video we take the route from Market Place, down Baxter Gate, then onto St Sepulchre Gate, Trafford Way, Cleveland Street and Silver Street before ending up back at Doncaster Market.

I was shocked just how big the centre of Doncaster actually is and how many big name shops there are in the streets and also in the Frenchgate Centre and Colonnades Centre. It's fair to say that there are all the big names you'd expect to see on any high street in Doncaster.

Doncaster is a market town on the River Don in South Yorkshire in the North of England.

Doncaster Market has hundreds of indoor and outdoor stands and stalls, including the beautiful Corn Exchange, a grand Victorian shopping centre.

Over 300,000 people live and reside in and around the town, although sadly it has been regularly voted in the top 10 of worst places to live in the UK.

The town also has an airport just five miles South East of the town centre known as Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and because of its location Doncaster is extremely popular with business as a hub for distribution centres for goods.

So whether you want to visit the town for the horse racing at Doncaster Race Course, the shops and shopping in the Frenchgate Centre or to hang out it's easy to get to, really easy to park up and walk into the centre and there are plenty of places to visit and look around here.

Famous and notable people associated with Doncaster include the singer and musician Louis Tomlinson from the band One Direction.

TV show celebrity Jeremy Clarkson also famously hails from the town, actor Brian Blessed comes from nearby Mexborough

I thought you might like to see what Doncaster is like in 2021 so we took our cameras and filmed this walk through the town to show it in its raw form so you can see for yourself.

So what's it like to live in Doncaster in 2021? Well there are good areas and bad areas in every town and city and it's no different here.

Things to do in Doncaster include visiting the Minster, the racecourse, or maybe a gig at a live music venue like The Leopard to see some live music, walking around the markets here etc. There are lots of things here if you're wondering what to do in Doncaster whilst you're here.

Britain in the 1950s

At the beginning of the 1950s, Britain was threadbare, bombed-out, financially and morally exhausted. Its major cities were still bombsites, it was almost impossible for many families to borrow money, rationing was harsher than ever, and there was an acute shortage of decent housing.

A short tour of Rotherham, England, UK. We take a trip to Rotherham and take in its sights and facilities.

Rotherham is a large minster town in South Yorkshire, England which along with its nearby settlements form the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, with a population of 257,280 in the 2011 census.

Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, its central area is on the banks of the River Don below its confluence with the Rother on the traditional road between Sheffield and Doncaster. A visit to Conisbrough Castle

A visit to Conisbrough Castle, operated by English Heritage and a short distance outside of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. A lovely day, slightly overcast but no rain. Pre-booking due to COVID 19 was still required but the staff are helpful and if numbers are low in the castle they let you in early. More of a walk around video we see views from the old castle walls and from all levels of the keap. Views from the now upper area are amazing.

We noted several CL sites very close to the town but need to investigate exact locations. We had been interested to learn that an episode of Most Haunted was made in the castle, didn't find that out until we left!

UK - An Hour at Mexborough - Diesel Variety - 6/1/2021

I had noticed one or two light engine movements showing on the timetable. These can sometimes throw up interesting locomotives, so I thought it was worth taking my daily covid exercise in the direction of the nearby line.
Camcorder in hand, I made my way the 5 minutes down to the original site of Mexborough station, now about 800 metres from the station.
The visit threw up one or two worthwhile operations but, probably, the highlight was Class 37 number 37884 of the EuroPhoenix hire fleet making its way from Leicester to Doncaster, presumably for some last minute urgent onward operation. 37884 was originally built in 1963 by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns as number D6883.
Recorded on 6th January 2021 - in line with current Covid-19 regulations.

OLD DENABY VIEW OF MEXBOROUGH

As the title implies,a rather panoramic view of Mexborough from across the River Don,and taken a few years ago.

MEXBOROUGH, OLD FOOT TUNNEL.

In 1850 the railway was opened from Barnsley to Doncaster via Mexborough. In going through Mexborough they had to cross the canal, and alongside the bridge a tunnel was incorporated through the embankment. This was access for people, animals and small carts, and was so called a foot tunnel.A journey through the tunnel reveals that it has been extended due to the expansion of the rail network. The exact location of the tunnel, is on the opposite bank of the canal to Lidl's supermarket at Mexborough.

Passenger & Freight Trains at Mexborough.

My original intention had been to film at Meadowhall, but after noticing that it would have just been a film of just DMU's I decided to take the short trip to Mexborough and film there for an hour. It was a good move as I was still able to film 11 trains in that hour, and there were 4 class 66 movements.
00:00 The train I arrived on, class 150 150275 with the name 'The Yorkshire Regiment the Yorkshire Warrior' leaves with the 2R24 Sheffield to Adwick.
00:25 Freightliner class 66 66515 on the 6M73 Doncaster Decoy to Toton with a load of new rails.
01:29 Northern 150277 on the 2R25 Adwick to Sheffield.
01:58 A pair of TransPennine Express class 185 units form the 1B75 Cleethorpes to Manchester Piccadilly.
02:49 A X-Country Voyager unit forms the 1V87 Newcastle to Banbury train.
03:35 DBC class 66's 66147, 66080 and 66027 on the 0Z54 Doncaster Belmont to Toton light engine movement.
04:04 Freightliner 66507 brings the 4L85 Shepcote Lane to Felixstowe through.
04:55 66711 'Sence' in AGI livery with the 4L11 Masborough to Felixstowe intermodal service.
06:00 Another pair of TransPennine Express class 185 units on the 1B74 Manchester Piccadilly to Cleethorpes service.
06:22 Norther class 170 no. 170473 on the 1J45 Scarborough to Sheffield.
06:42 Deputising for a class 150 unit, class 158 158906 with the 2R28 Sheffield to Adwick.

All in all, well worth the modest £3.30 (Senior Citizen) return fare!

THORNER: Leeds Parish #12 of 38

One of the more quirky features of this village would be that it has no street lighting. This is something that’s so normal usually, but here, when it grows dark, it stays dark! The parish contains the hamlet of Eltofts which is out to the West towards Shadwell. That’s important because some of the features in the village make reference to it

The name comes from the Old English words þorn and ofer, and thus means thorn bank. As for Eltofts it comes from the personal name Ella and the Old English word toft, itself borrowed from Old Norse. It means “Ella's plot of land”. The former Bishop's House at Eltofts was the Dower House of the Earls of Mexborough, hence a connection here to South Yorkshire

In 1245 the village acquired a market, and the area around Main Street shows a typical medieval layout of strips leading from a market street. As well as farming, pottery was a local industry in the Middle Ages, supplanted by the textile industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Eastern end of the village is much more modern, and there’s a reason for that. In 1970 the historic core was designated a Conservation Area by Leeds City Council.

The village once had a railway station and an annual agricultural show here which ceased in 1924. One of the prettiest things about this village comes in the form of the Mill Beck which, at the South western end of the settlement forms a shallow ford. Running right through the village, the Mill Beck has a total length of 0.45km. It may be relatively short but it’s pretty and idyllic!

I’d never been here before and I would certainly recommend you have a look around if you haven’t before as well. This is THORNER.
