Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge - Visitor Center and Boardwalk Trail (2021)
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is a 140,000 acres (57,000 ha) U.S. National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) on the Atlantic coast of Florida's largest barrier island. NASA's Kennedy Space Center and visitor complex are also situated on the island and NASA can restrict access to the refuge based on its operational needs.
The NWR contains over 1000 species of plants, 117 species of fish, 68 amphibians and reptiles, 330 birds, and 31 mammal species, of which 21 species are listed as endangered by the state of Florida or by the US federal government. Management of the NWR is provided through the Merritt Island NWR Complex, which provides hiking and driving trails for the public, subject to access restrictions from NASA. It is a 'gateway site' for the Great Florida Birding Trail.
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is located due east of Titusville on Merritt Island in Brevard County, Florida, and occupies 140,000 acres (570 km2), overlaid with the Kennedy Space Center. To the north, it borders on the Canaveral National Seashore; to the south it encompasses non-public portions of the Kennedy Space Center (with which it also shares some history), which in turn abuts Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River run through the refuge. Since public access to all these areas is controlled in various ways, the refuge is part of a very substantial area of relatively undisturbed wildlife habitat.
Subject to the needs of NASA, public access is relatively unrestricted, though it is only allowed during daylight hours; camping is only allowed for certain organized youth organizations.
The refuge provides hiking and driving trails for visitors, with opportunities for observing wildlife without causing disturbances; most of the species listed above can be seen by a casual visitor. An observation deck is provided near the drawbridge that carries State Road 3 over the Haulover Canal, in the northern part of the refuge, since manatees frequently congregate there. Boating is permitted on the waters around and within the refuge, and provides an opportunity for observing the wildlife. There are facilities for launching pleasure boats at several places. In addition the refuge includes, and gives access to Playalinda Beach on the outer barrier island. Fishing is generally permitted, and hunting for wildfowl is allowed on a strictly limited basis. There is a Visitor Center.

Merritt Island, FL - A Hidden Gem Known By The Locals (Full Time RV Living)
Hiking the Island Pioneer Trail in Merritt Island, FL is a fun relaxing nature trail for the whole family to experience what Florida has to offer.
We really enjoyed this easy 1.1 mile (2.2 miles round trip) hike. We started at the south trailhead which is just east of State Road 3 off of Hall Road in Merritt Island, FL ( 28⁰ 26’ 4.4”N 80⁰ 41’ 39.8”W ) and followed the nature trail north to Kings Park. There is little to no shade so be sure to bring your sunscreen, Chapstick and plenty of water. Be aware that the only animals allowed on the Island Pioneer Trail are service animals. Also, although we didn't have an issue with insects on this particular day, we would highly recommend bringing bug spray as this is Florida and you never know.
Each trailhead has a restroom, a covered picnic table, but no drinking water. The lake at Kings Park is very inviting, however, we spoke with a few local kids who were fishing and advised us that they would never swim in the lake themselves due to alligators.
This hike is very close to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center and Port Canaveral so if you are ever in the area and want to go on a non-strenuous peaceful hike, visit the link below for more information.
