Maunabo Puerto Rico, A Photographer’s Playground
Many people visiting Puerto Rico never go beyond Old San Juan. That’s a sad fact. Others come for the beaches, of which Puerto Rico has some of the best in the world. Sadly, like so many other places around the world, the effects of erosion caused by rising sea levels are slowly affecting Puerto Rican beaches.
This week we visited the small town of Maunabo, on the southeastern end of Puerto Rico. It’s the kind of place that banks on its natural beauty, not on architectural marvels or amusement areas. Maunabo is simply beautiful.
It also has the only black sand beach on the larger Island. The other one is on the souther coast of the smaller island of Vieques. I haven’t visited the one in Vieques lately but erosion is starting to rear its ugly head at Playa Los Bohíos in Maunabo.
Then there’s Punta Tuna, a beautiful lighthouse that could easily be a worldwide attraction. Close by is Playa Larga, a very long beach (hence the name) that extends along the Punta Tuna Nature Reserve.
If you’re a landscape photographer like me you’ll love Maunabo, because there’s eye candy all around you. Watch this video to the end and you’ll understand what I mean.

Exploring Maunabo Puerto Rico (Punta Tuna lighthouse)
Maunabo is known as La Ciudad Tranquila. It a laid back beach town with beautiful beaches and a lighthouse built by the Spaniards in 1892. Playa Punta Tuna lies below the majestic Fado de Punta Tuna. The beach run forever lined with tall coconut palms. There is a very large natural preserve that has miles of hiking trails and an observation tower. Playa el Cocal is more quaint beach that is safer for swimming and even has a surf break where you can find the adventurous surfing and riding boogie boards. The area is also popular with turtles. Many of the beaches are nesting areas for sea turtles and we at least a half dozen sea turtle nests on the day we visited. There several little beach bars where you can grab a bite to eat or sip on a Medalla. If you are looking for a fun day trip Maunabo will not disappoint.

Encontramos la Playa Los Bohíos en el hermoso pueblo de Maunabo, localizado en el sureste de la isla de Puerto Rico. Esta playa tiene una característica muy especial y es que su arena es negra. El color se debe a que está compuesta primordialmente por el elemento hierro. En la playa encontramos la desembocadura del Río de Maunabo. Este lugar posee una gran biodiversidad. Para aquellas personas que observan aves, este es un lugar para realizar esta actividad en horas de la mañana. Sus aguas son usadas por surfistas debido al fuerte oleaje. Este es un lugar interesante para explorar en el área sureste de la isla.
